This is the second TAS I was told to submit whilst another of the same movie was on the bench.
Welcome to this game, featuring repetition but only 3 levels worth of content.
Tonight we watch Panama Joe explore the deep ruins to find the treasure within.

The Treasure

  • BizHawk 2.3.1
  • Death to Save Time
  • Walk 500 miles
  • Walk 500 more
  • To fall down at your door
  • Da, da, da

Improvement Note

This is an improvement of 666 frames over the previous submission by Lobsterzelda.
Additionally this is an improvement over the userfile for that submission by 128 frames.

No, you cannot make that jump.

No, you cannot go sooner with this input.

No, you cannot go sooner and have a jump to save your life.

The Death Abuse

Immediately greeted to the game, Panama Joe decides to walk off from a short hight and die... they do this 3 times.
Panama Joe is also unable to hold onto a beam instantly falling from that short height and dying.
Panama Joe decided that their true stride is from the height amongst the stars, after surviving the rope and beam decides to walk off from a higher height and well... dies.
Panama Joe ignores the 'Bridge Out' sign and fell into lava.
Panama Joe's life choices ultimately ends them up back at their starting location of that room and being able to quickly move back into the previous.

Do you waste time collecting the treasure?

Surprisingly, No thanks to keeping track of 0x69 which keeps track on how long you're in that room for, and being safely planted on that ground before the drop. (Yes, I did throw a no input version to see if anything happens, no time is gained)

Any levels that improve the input by a few frames immediately get negated by the next level.

Level 2 had an 8 frame improvement which I proceeded to lose in level 3 for example, thanks to cycles.

IS THERE A LOOP?

No. 3 Areas, the 3rd area repeats ad infinitum.

Special Thanks.

DrD2k9 for investigating my input, finding improvements that became instantly negated and having THE SPECIAL EYES.

feos: Nice job optimizing this game. Level 3 input synced after I copied it to play once again, only the jump over the first skull had to be adjusted, so level 3 is indeed repeating. The game doesn't offer much entertaining gameplay, and the movie got uncertain feedback, so accepting to Vault.

Welp... It looks like I just got usurped. I'm guessing that the net extra timesave in this run comes from going fast enough to make it ahead of another lazer wall cycle, since this is exactly 128 frames faster than my userfile run (and the laser walls flash on and off on 128 frame cycles). Edit: What I meant to say is that you gain 128 frames by gaining a cycle on the laser walls (including the time it takes to walk through them). The actual laser walls themselves flash on and off in 92 frame cycles)

Oh man... sorry dude.
I recently discovered that if you haven't reached a level of frustration with TASing any game, then you haven't done your due diligence. ---- SOYZA: Are you playing a game? Well, my rules are the same. Great job...Yes vote for finding more frames. But seriously? 666 frames cut...did you just stop at that point? LOL

It's all good. As an aside, I think this may be the last new version of Montezuma's Revenge to be submitted to this site... Unless somebody gets an urge to TAS the ZX Spectrum version of the game or the Apple 2 version of the game.

Nothing is perfect, neither is this run (presumably). You have chance to participate in a frame war :)
Warning: When making decisions, I try to collect as much data as possible before actually deciding. I try to abstract away and see the principles behind real world events and people's opinions. I try to generalize them and turn into something clear and reusable. I hate depending on unpredictable and having to make lottery guesses. Any problem can be solved by systems thinking and acting.

I'm for it! These submissions are turning out to be quite the entertainment.

From looking more closely at Spikestuff's movie, it looks like the 128 frames saved is due solely to the death at the end of level 3 in the lava, which skips having to wait for the bridge to re-appear. There are 8 frames saved in level 2, but this is a temporary gain (since it's not fast enough to beat the next laser cycle). In any event, I don't see any routing changes I could implement to improve upon this time, as these changes would need to be significant enough to beat a whole laser cycle. If I submitted a run with a different route but the same final end time, it would be unlikely to be accepted, since this run was submitted first. Thus, I've decided to cancel my Montezuma's Revenge any % run in favor of making a 100%/all treasures TAS of the game. I realize that this would have to be accepted into moons to make it onto the site, but I believe that if any Atari 2600 game without a TAS on this site could make it into moons, this game would be it.

If the community agrees to define it as proper full completion rule set, it won't have to be entertaining.

I created a WIP of the 100% route for Montezuma's Revenge, so that people could see what it looks like. I consider 100% to be getting all of the items outside the treasure room, since each item goes away once you get it. The treasure room treasures keep reappearing forever, so I ignored them in my definition. Here's a link to my encode of the WIP: Link to video
