Post subject: Laid off; TAS content at charity events full time? Patreon?

TL;DR: I was laid off unexpectedly after 10+ years and I'm exploring showing TAS content at charity events full time by opening a Patreon page. I'm dwangoAC and I am on staff here at TASVideos as the site Ambassador. In that capacity I've led efforts to show TAS content from the site at charity events like Games Done Quick since 2014, helping raise over $700k for charity in the process but also racking up $15k in equipment and travel costs. I was recently laid off from my day job of the last 10+ years and I'm looking at the option of working on TAS content for charity events full time. To do so will require an enormous response, however, and I'm currently testing the waters at Patreon.com/dwangoAC to see if it's even viable. I'm at 10% of my goal as of now so I'm anticipating I will seek a new day job and use the funds I receive to help offset travel and equipment costs but if I hit my funding goal I will explore going full time. Full time means a lot more hours highlighting TAS content for all to see and promoting the community. There's a minor footnote here. There are a lot of people from this site who have given up a massive amount of their own time and resources and in many cases have spent their own money to support TAS content at GDQ and other charity events who are equally deserving of financial support. I recognize that rather by fate I'm now the primary representative of both TASVideos as well as the community that has formed around TASBot and has sharded off somewhat in the process. This has led to a continued imbalance where there may be some hurt feelings from some in this community by me even attempting to ask for money. Some TASVideos folks asked me to start a Patreon almost 5 years ago but now that I'm at a point of needing to do so to keep going I'm feeling just as awkward about asking for money as I always have. To anyone who might have hurt feelings about me even asking for money, please accept my apologies and know that I'm committed to ensuring everything I do is to the benefit of all who are interested in TAS content and that I'm doing everything in the best interests of helping raise money for a variety of charities. My best intentions are still going to mean I fail at times and I realize there's no possible way I can make such a diverse group of people all happy all the time but I'm committed to being honorable in what I do. If you're upset about how I've represented the community in the past please contact me personally or if warranted please feel free to open a separate thread. I'd prefer to keep this thread free from personal attacks or drama. Thanks for understanding. What will I do? I'll keep doing what I've been doing but without dipping into the red if nothing else. In the last 7 months I've attended 7 different events but my expense deficit was growing at a rate that was untenable without changes as it was. Suddenly being laid off makes that pressure even more unbearable, but with your help I'll continue to represent TAS content at AGDQ / SGDQ / GDQx, RPG Limit Break, ESA, MAGFest / MAGWest, and other charity events including events from the TASBot community like BBCB and DTCD as I am able. So, will you consider supporting me at Patreon.com/dwangoAC even if it's only a small pledge per month? TAS content at charity events in 2019 has helped raise over $280k and I'd love to see it continue to grow. Anything you can do to help me support that while also supporting my kids would be amazing. Thanks!
I was laid off in May 2023 and became too ill to work this year and could use support via Patreon or onetime donations as work on TASBot Re: and TASBot HD is stalled. I'm dwangoAC, TASVideos Senior Ambassador and BDFL of the TASBot community; when healthy, I post TAS content on YouTube.com/dwangoAC based on livestreams from Twitch.tv/dwangoAC.

First of all I am (and I think I'm not exaggerating, if I would say that the TASVideos community as a whole are) grateful for your contributions: - Wiki: TASBot planning, works, presentations and the really good quality you are trying to keep up - All those console verification videos that helps us to ensure what we are doing really works on the real hardware - And the usual TASing and participating in discussions about TASVideos and TASes - Your dedication and commitment. Regarding the footnote, it is important to understand why do you need money in the first place: - To increase exposure of community efforts, many people contributed to make a content, which can be showcased on various platforms (as in TASes on hardwares) and medias. These contents are presented by dwangoAC on various locations starting from the internet (twitch, youtube, TASVideos) to the outside (GDQ, presentations, talkshows, podcasts) - Traveling even inside the same country where you live and where the event happens requires money. - You sacrifice your own time and purchasing various parts (probably cables, sd cards, consoles/carts) from time to time to make sure everything goes right. Asking for money is part of looking for financial support. dwangoAC does this for the sole reason to be able to travel to said event to showcase TASVideos (related) content. He isn't asking for premium or honorary or salary or whatever some might think. He (probably :) ) doesn't spends this money on something else. He also have a family to care about. If anyone think that he shouldn't allowed to ask people in our community for financial support, please show up and tell me your ideas. On a closing note, is it a possibility to participate at GDQ from your own home like the Harvey Relief Done Quick?

i believe you should not do this full time in no way, please do not do this, it will put in check the charity notion of your effort and is surely not sustainable, TASing is an extremely niche form of entertainment in many other subsets of niche forms of entertainment, you would also be monetizing other people's work indirectly get a normal conventional job, please, i beg you, i know the scare after such an expected turn of events can be harsh, and you may feel the need to try something innovative but now is surely not the time, and turning your back to the corporate world to try to live off TASing content is something fantasious as hell, you'll basically depend on other people's contributions to live i hope you dont take this as an insult but as a sincere concern for your mental and financial well-being. sorry for not being more articulate but im tired as hell, have a great week and good luck in your path
I want all good TAS inside TASvideos, it's my motto. TAS i'm interested: Megaman series, specially the RPGs! Where is the mmbn1 all chips TAS we deserve? Where is the Command Mission TAS? i'm slowly moving away from TASing fighting games for speed, maybe it's time to start finding some entertainment value in TASing.

A couple things out of this: I'm currently not seeing the trajectory needed to go full time, and to be honest as of right now the Patreon commitments extended out for a full year aren't even able to cover the expenses I've had in the last few events. It's certainly *possible* to make a living on being, well, a content creator and curator, but it's not an easy existence. I would like to point out that I am as always in full compliance with the site's Creative Commons Attribution 2.0 licensing and have had internal discussions with others on staff. I'm attempting at all times to be above reproach. I do not believe there is any aspect that is putting the charity notions of the efforts in check as such a position is quite common in other fields. In essence, I'm not giving up on the possibility but we'll see how things play out. I have some opportunities I'm investigating in the meantime and I'm in a good frame of mind.

This is just a quick note to close out this thread; while Patreon has been extremely successful in helping defray travel costs to charity events it was nowhere near enough to support my family and I am happy to report that I am now a Senior Security Analyst at Bishop Fox. The stability is much appreciated. I'd like to thank everyone who has helped support me through various trials over the last several years - I couldn't have made it without you.
