This TAS completes the game Match-Up from Wii Party.
Emulator used: Dolphin 5.0-10908

About The Game

Match-Up is a turn based memory game. The objective of the game is to match Mii characters that are wearing the same color shirt. A Mii's shirt color is hidden from the player until the Mii is selected. You can only select two Mii's per turn, if the two Mii's selected have matching shirts, you gain 2(+) points, and another turn. If the two Mii's dont match, you gain no points, and lose your turn. Whichever player has the most points once all Mii's have been matched or once all rounds have been played, wins.

RNG In Match-Up

A memory game naturally has RNG in it, and Match-Up is no exception. There are two random elements to account for: the Mii's shirt color, and the Mii's location. A Mii can have one of six shirt colors (Purple, green, red, blue, yellow, platinum), and a Mii can be located in one of 6 sections of the map. Every time you have to switch between sections of the map, a few seconds are lost due to the time it takes to fully scroll, so the best possible RNG would be 2 pairs of same shirt Mii's per section of the map, and the TAS comes very close. Out of 24 Mii's, only 8 aren't optimally located(24/24 has never been seen before).

RTA/TAS Runs Of Match-Up

The current RTA record for Match-Up is a 5:09 by Cmdr
Other Match-Up TASes (in RTA timing) are a 2:31 and a 2:26 both made by MorphicYoshi.

Masterjun: Judging.
Masterjun: We allow standalone TASes of separate game modes, but the minigames are not counted as game modes. Clearing a minigame doesn't complete the game. Now this game consists mainly of minigames, some of which are uninteresting when TASed, so this might simply be a case of a bad game choice. I can see a TAS that clears every minigame being more likely to be accepted, if only for completeness sake, not entertainment. But this run doesn't fit with the goals of the site.

Yep! This TAS has an RTA time of 2:23. If your interested in the rules used for the RTA timings, they are: "Timing starts when you select 'Start'. Timing ends when 'Victory!' appears on screen at the end of the game". These rules are taken from the speedrun.com leaderboard for Wii Party https://www.speedrun.com/wii_party#Match-Up

This is going to get rejected. Why not make an all minigames TAS? I'd watch that. Maybe you could even sell an "all minigames on the speedrun leaderboards" category.

I'll echo what I wrote to warmCabin in private before anyone corrects him because hopefully I've informed him on this case. The runner is going off of what feos said. This mode is actually a proper mode like for example Bishi Bashi Special. This submission is exactly like this movie (time trial, maximum score). Since the previous one was actual minigames, this one is like a dedicated mode if you apply the same logic of Bishi Bashi. I honestly will say this is a TAS that actually has a better chance of being something that's acceptable to the site than well the rejected submission.

There's no pointing in doing just one simple party game. On top of that, it has absolutely no taste in entertainment. No vote. I'd suggest doing a 100%/story mode run (if applicable) or doing all minigames at the highest difficulty (Master) for a run of Wii Party to get accepted.

I did see that message. I stand corrected on that. But even if it's technically a game mode, it still kinda feels like a single minigame. Does Match-Up actually not appear in the standard minigame rotation?

I don't believe this TAS should be published for a couple of reasons. The gameplay doesn't really stand out significantly from non tool-assisted gameplay. The main reason why this is so much faster than the RTA record is that the game is a memory game, so the TAS can always select the right option without mistakes. Additionally, the TAS can immediately click on the next mii, but this isn't a very significant difference over an RTA run. It reminds me of a TAS of a bowling game where the main impressive thing about the run is that every throw is a strike. In and of itself, this minigame also isn't particularly entertaining to watch, which would eliminate the possibility that this minigame could be accepted to moons tier. I also wonder if there's any way to get more matches per section of the map then this TAS does. When the minigame loads, are all of the colors of each mii fixed after that point?

Is there any technically impressive RNG manipulation happening to get the Mii pairs in the same sections? Or is the RNG fully set when the game begins?

The reason why I chose to TAS this game instead of all minigames/solo mode (the closest thing to a story mode) is simply that an all minigames TAS is already being worked on by TheProJamer, and solo mode is just a random selection of minigames with no other content besides menuing. To answer warmCabin's question: Match-Up doesn't appear in the standard minigame rotation. A normal playthrough of Match-Up would take at least 15 minutes (there are minigames every 3 rounds that add on to that time), while on average a regular minigame takes less then two minutes. To answer the questions about RNG: Once you start the game the colors of the Mii's shirts can't be changed in any way.

There's like there's a term for this. Ah, that's right it's "Superhuman". We have other TASes accepted that are basically Superhuman TASes.

Even a single pair games won't beat the game at all since there's almost no possible way for Wii Party to be published. No vote of course!
Cuphead TASes desyncs unfortunately.

I like to believe that even the slowest-paced games can have the most neat nuances to entertain. This minigame however is basically just a memory game and I feel that it doesn't differentiate much from any other memory game other than the platinum pairs granting more points (which virtually holds no meaning for the TAS since all pairs are gotten first try anyway). As a theory of how fast the gamemode can be beaten (with incredibly ridiculous luck, mind you), it's ok-ish, but it absolutely fails in the entertainment department. Definitely not Moons tier, and Vault fails to apply as well due to the scope of the established goal (single stage, or in this case minigame, as opposed to any% or 100% completion). Voting No.

FilipeTales you seem to lack the understanding that the Author (well the messenger) was given reasoning by a Judge that a case like this would be acceptable, but unfortunately it isn't. The author is fully aware of the user files, and was basing his choice by what was written by the Judge, it's unfortunate that they got rejected of information they learnt.
