I can confirm that limiting how much you read and where you read stuff is best for keeping sanity. Every news site wants to post the worst about any situation because it's what gets the clicks and spins every story to fit what they want to say. Something which has also helped me is also trying to look for the positives of the situation, not only is China really low on new case count (whether you choose to believe this or not is up to you, but I like to employ the idea of "believing something which could happen until I see evidence suggesting otherwise"), but Italy is also starting to see some form of decline in cases over the past few days. It feels like as long as you employ good social distancing, the worst of it will pass potentially by the time we hit Early-Mid June. Whilst you have people being very greedy with stockpiling, you also have a lot of people offering to shop for others who are unable (for one reason or another) to go outside. This will undoubtedly raise awareness of not spreading around even small viruses. If this does become a seasonal thing or another virus occurs, hopefully the governments of the world will know how to react and what measures to take to reduce the spread. And as Dacius said, employing the rules that have been set out will mean that are far less likely to pass on anything. If you haven't seen, I feel like this video by Mark Rober helps with explaining some things: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5-dI74zxPg TL;DR: Don't look at new sources, there are positives to the situation, there is an end to this.

Big post update and some good (?) news. If there are any gamers™ among you, or just people with beefy computers and not much to do with them, I've just set up a TASVideos Folding@Home team, of which I am currently the sole member. If you feel the quarantines and lockdowns have deprived the planet of some major global warming contribution, you can help heat it back up while doing some protein simulations that may or may not help understand the virus and develop cures. More info in the opening post.

My laptop's kind of on it's last legs now, so I doubt I would be able to do that...

Laptops generally aren't what I'd call beefy computers and they are prone to power- or heat-based throttling (especially if the fan ducts haven't been cleaned recently or at all). This brings their performance further down, which is why they aren't the best choice for folding. Even if you do keep the F@H client running, it may not receive high-priority work units since those are more urgent and require quick processing to be meaningful. Same applies to tablets and phones. Yours is a decent one, so you could potentially fold high-priority WUs on it, but I'm mainly referring to computers in well-ventilated cases with modern 4+ TFLOPS graphics cards (think GTX 1060/1650S and higher) and/or 12+ thread CPUs which aren't too strained by crunching math. I'll add the note to the OP. (For the record, I'm currently folding on an i3-8350K @ 4.8 GHz and a GTX 1080 in a high-end tower case.)

How about some interesting (and perhaps scary) facts about viruses an general and SARS-CoV-2 in particular? The total number of viruses in an infected person at worst is just staggering. One single saliva droplet of a diameter of about ten micrometers contains several hundreds of millions of viruses. I can't even begin to imagine how many of them are there in the entire body. Why does SARS-CoV-2 attack the lungs in particular? The reason for this is that it can only infect certain types of human cells. Those that are found in the lungs (and a few other places). I think this has something to do with their surface proteins. (Of course they have been naturally selected to infect these particular types of cell because that way the spread much more efficiently.) Most viruses multiply by invading a cell and inserting their own RNA or DNA into the DNA of the cell (although there are a few viruses that multiply by themselves without this kind of insertion). While not usually, sometimes viruses infect germline cells (cells that produce eggs and sperm), and sometimes these cells end up developing into a viable offspring organism. The viral DNA becomes an integral part of the individual's DNA, which may then be inherited by its offspring. It's estimated that about 5-8% of the human DNA has come from viruses.

Makes me wonder how many viruses particles are needed to infect an average person. Specially because, according to WHO,
airborne spread has not been reported for COVID-19 and it is not believed to be a major driver of transmission based on available evidence
So, if the disease has advanced enough to become community spread, like in most countries, does it really make sense to prohibit people from going to the park or the beach? Staying home all the time, with someone of your family that has the virus but does not exhibit any symptom, could be problematic. Pretty much no one is making individual quarantine. https://www.nextbigfuture.com/2020/03/who-says-prolonged-exposure-in-confined-spaces-is-main-coronavirus-transmission.html

The quarantine isn't ultimately about preventing disease spread anymore. As many as 60% of people will get the virus unless they keep us quarantined forever. The hope is that a temporary quarantine will bide enough time that hospitals can prepare to treat those who are symptomatic and develop better methods of treatment, so that people don't die due to lack of available care.

That's correct. And one of the biggest problems right now is that there isn't enough factual data to make confident claims about things that aren't apparent, hence the wording like "not believed to be a major driver", etc. You wouldn't believe the amount of conflicting statements, generalizations, and outright fantasies I see when scouring the web for new information.

I had team r/incremental_games set up, but I'm joining this one. I'm trying get my FAH app to fold, but right now it just sitting around and failing to download any WU. To anyone else curious how to "join" team: 1. Open Advanced Control 2. Press Configure (very top left) 3. Identify tab 4. Put down name you'd like and team number is 251131 (for TASVideos team) 5. Save, that's it.

NYC is the perfect place for a pandemic to take over. With more than 10,000 people/km²,average cold temperatures and people from all over the world arriving all the time, pandemics will spread 'like the plague'. But yes, I would take anything from WHO and China with a huge grain of salt, as they have proved to be dishonest at times.

While it may not be airborne, it spreads through saliva, and microscopic droplets of it can hover in the air and be infectious for quite some time. Also, when they land on surfaces, they can then be caught on people's hands who touch those surfaces, and from there often to the face. This is why they strongly advice to cough and sneeze into your elbow, never into your hand or just open air. (Even if you sneeze facing away from any people, those droplets are going to be airborne for quite some time, and they may land on surfaces.)

The Folding@Home team page seems to be down for me, is the site having connection issues or is it just on my end?

Folding@home has been insanely popular these last few weeks. I think they said a 20x or 40x increase in users in the last month. The work assignment servers have only just recently gotten slightly consistent but my GPU is still idle most of the time. Their stats site being flaky doesn't surprise me either. Try again in an hour.

More like DAYS. I haven't been able to download WU for GPU for 5 days now. Right now it just rarely download non-COVID related WU for CPU. Last night I saw Pande team posted 2 new COVID related WUs for distribution, seem they deleted it.

For the last 24 hours my CPU has been kept busy with work, but the GPU has been hit or miss. So I guess your mileage will vary. I have a Ryzen 3900X so I don't mind. I've not been tracking what projects they've been working on, I'll take whatever they throw at me.

people just dont understand how much you realistically will use toilet paper. A simple 12 pack is enough to make it though most of the year, if you use it only to use the bathroom. if the worry is you wont be able to go back to the store in that time, then buy two of them. most stores are limiting it by 2 per customer, so it makes no sense. there's also the fact that people just buy them to resell them later for a higher price. heck, people have been doing that with masks as well. recently the FBI has been cracking down on such people, like this one who marked them up by 700%: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DlaWuGj2Grw

What I really don't understand is why even hoard TP in the first place when you can install a fully functional bidet attachment for like $50–70 and use, like one roll a month. It's more hygienic and easily pays for itself within a few years. There are even models with built-in dryers, so you might as well drop TP usage entirely.

I never tried it, but I can't imagine feeling clean just by having water sprayed at my butt. I get that sense of feeling clean by wiping. Also toilet paper can be used for other things, like wiping surfaces or blowing one's nose.
