a strange discovery: the success rate of magic like freeze and def down is linked to the position in the fight. I wasn't able to succeed with it (against Garana) outside the 4th spot

http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1999158277/Paladin%27s%20Quest%20%28U%29.smv this is it! nearly 54k frames less than the test run and nearly 82k frames less than the complete run. Now - I need to find the strict minimum for magics to work (def down mainly) since the fights are longer - I will probably need a few cards (like the one before the SKuruu camp) to boost the magic - I need to abuse attack back. I might try getting that actor from the circus (I can call him back) - I will look very carefully to reduce the number of battles even more - I discovered that Seed has one hell of a kick (35-50% stronger than his missile and energy draw)

For the Purpbird/Kong fights on the mountain, could it make any sense to have Tiger BreakG the Purpbirds and Chezni FireG them on your Strike First turn, thereby avoiding their second round attacks? Midia might Para kn the Kong - don't know if you could be fast enough to kill him on the second turn. Why does one of these fights have Midia using Para kn and one fight using Legs? One should be better, no? (Maybe you couldn't avoid a Freeze proc?) Is Tiger really that useless in the Jarmlx fight? If the Purpbird fights go better, he's going to have a lot more HP - he can probably get some decent damage output in before Jarmlx kills him. If you plan to have Midia die in the Jarmlx fight, kill her off early to avoid having to input her Defend menu command. You can almost certainly manipulate future misses against Chezni. Could it be worth it to manipulate fighting the 10 Leech battle more for more XP? I think there's a more overreaching conversation implied here too, I really believe there's a lot more to be optimized with regards to what we fight. (Further thoughts - if we want to control for more XP early on, it's way better to manipulate more Hupman/F.Witch fights soon after; the battles are quick, it's more Experience, and you can manipulate Fire cd drops if we decide that's a thing we want to be doing)

Yes, fights can be optimized. Since I gain so many levels against later bosses, what I really want to do is get stronger magic (so try to fry one rotterbee rather than 3). And yes, cards are a big plus. I hope I can get sp cards

http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1294720212/Paladin%27s%20Quest%20%28U%29.smv saved about 460 frames (from the previous WIP) after the Bird Mountain. I will probably rework the mountain part as I lost 1000 frames compared to the advance I had before I climbed it. Oh, and before reaching the cabin before the camp, missing the escape was on purpose so I wouldn't fight again

http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/678558754/Paladin%27s%20Quest%20%28U%29.smv now a 1947 frames save from the previous test after the Bird Mountain, despite picking up the f card in the hotel. it is my quickest run in the mountain (1k less than the best test, 600 frames from the published run)

Just wanted to say that you're one of the hardest-working TASers I've seen on this site, man! I admire your dedication in improving runs as much as possible. Keep up the stellar work!

http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1416713739/Paladin%27s%20Quest%20%28U%29.smv I had to backtrack because my sp magic would have been too weak. I'm now about 220 frames behind the test run, but it's still an improvement (no fights in the 2nd Jurayn temple, -80 frames against renegades)

So sp power is a limiting factor. Is there any chance of using a different strategy on Renegade to get around that? Are there any other limiting factors?

yes: the position chenzi takes has quite an influence. for this final (I hope!) run, freeze only worked when he was on the first spot. I tried with the para knife, but I hardly succeeded

After my tribulations with SOW, I've decided to revisit this game. Just before entering the Tower of Gabnid, I realized that waiting a few frames changes the step counter. More to come...

If I calculated this right, I already saved 10 seconds from the previous run after the first boss. Same number of fights (6), but I ran away one more time, was able to cast fireg against the first boss AND still complete the fight in 5 rounds.
