Mortal Kombat is a game that needs no introduction. This is the game that made parents worry about the media, and probably caused all that video games make people violent stuff. I chose to run the Genesis version because it's the one I played a lot when I was younger. I was initially going to play as Rayden, but I chose Johnny Cage instead.

Game objectives

  • Emulator used: Gens 11a
  • Beat the game on Very Hard difficulty as Johnny Cage
  • 3 Button controller
  • Trades some speed for entertainment
  • Luck manipulation

Comments

When I was playing MK1 Genesis again, I noticed that Rayden could just keep ramming himself into the enemy with his torpedo attack for an easy win with almost no punishments. I initially wanted to record a TAS of said torpedo ramming, but then I thought, "No one actually wants to watch Rayden slamming into his opponent for 20 minutes."
So, I chose to run Johnny Cage instead. Not really sure why, because I usually play Scorpion, but here we are. I enabled the blood code (ABACABB) for entertainment, even though it would probably save time to not do so.
Let me give a sort of basic rundown of what's happening. Basically, I'm trying to manipulate what the opponent will do (I know, shocker) for my benefit. This can be achieved by throwing fireballs randomly, or walking away from the opponent, for example. What I'm trying to manipulate is the opponent throwing a projectile at me. Every character has a projectile move in this game, and by getting them to throw it, they leave themselves vulnerable for, say, an aerial kick. That's usually what I try to do, but sometimes I do other things for entertainment purposes.
  • Johnny Cage's moves
    • Fireball: Back, Forward, A
    • Shadow Kick: Back, Forward, B
    • Fatality: Forward, Forward, Forward, A
    • And as much as I'd love to say I didn't, I completely forgot about the Crotch Punch. (Start + A)
I don't feel like I need to go and write something for every stage, because the same strategy is used throughout, and the strategy is pretty self-explanatory. I will, however, go over some interesting things in the run.
  • Managed to land 2 uppercuts on Scorpion (plus special fatality)
  • Froze myself with final hit on Sub-Zero (wastes time, but I had to)
  • Endurance 1 Rayden hit a torpedo attack and put me in a corner, forcing me to duck an undodgeable hit otherwise.
  • Glitched Scorpion's spear in Endurance 2. If Scorpion is hit at the same time the spear connects, the spear will play the animation that it's connected, but Scorpion will not pull the opponent closer to him. Minor graphical glitches ensue.
  • Froze myself AGAIN in Endurance 3. Unfortunately, I had Sonya to worry about, and had to execute a tight jump to escape. Then, it's projectile fighting time.
  • Goro wasn't very difficult. (took 2 tries in fact) His projectile comes out really fast, and you've already hit him by the time he thinks about doing another attack.
  • Hello, Reptile (Shang Tsung fight)
  • Shang Tsung also wasn't difficult. He turned into Goro in Round 1, allowing for an easy victory. In Round 2, I hit him while he was transforming. ST can't block while transforming, and for whatever reason he likes transforming a lot when you hit him.

Other comments

I encourage more people to try TASing MK1, as I found this very fun to make. Maybe make a JC TAS with the Crotch Punch, or without the Blood Code. Also, improvements could be made by not bothering with Test Your Might (something I completely forgot about), starting matches on the first frame possible, and better manipulation.

arkiandruski: Claiming for judging.
arkiandruski: As feos pointed out, this run is a few minutes slower than the real time world record, which also uses Johnny Cage, so the difference can't be blamed on character choice. This shows a lack of optimization for the run. A TAS must beat all known records to be acceptable for the site. Thus, I am rejecting this submission.

Before anyone incorrectly points to this submission here and state it's slower than it. It's actually faster by 71 frames (to earliest end input, no proper checking). I will unfortunately point out to you memeboi470 that the biggest issue for your TAS is that it's using a Beta ROM, v1.1/Rev A is an unreleased ROM by Midway. Only v1.0 is the official release.

No wonder I hadn't found anything on this mysterious v1.1.

Solid enough playthrough. The problem though, and this may be an unavoidable issue with MK1, is that the gameplay doesn't look particularly varied or superhuman. There's nowhere near the variety you can show off in this game, particularly if you can't use someone like Shang Tsung as a playable character. If this isn't being played purely for speed, then a playaround could be neat, but then we'd really want to see more of the game's content or more of a chance to embarrass the CPU opponents. (Also, it's a shame you didn't get the Johnny Cage crotch punch in there, especially on Sonya ;-) )
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. Doesn't trying that just result in him doing the splits and not actually punching? Or am I thinking of MK2?

Either way, it seems like fun playaround material. I vaguely recall he still tries to punch, but Sonya looks mildly annoyed instead of writhing in pain.

This run is about 2:40 slower than the human record for Cage. Unfortunately it also looks much slower paced. Just like with the other MK submission, it's not obvious from the gameplay that doing things slower is more entertaining in itself. And if this movie is not speed oriented at all, then it would need to do quite a bit more to really work as a playaround. Voted No.

I found conflicting info about this. First of all, the ROM it syncs on is
CRC32: 33F19AB6
MD5: E0BB4D00EA95B75AAC52851FB4D8EE47
SHA-1: 2C4A0618CC93EF7BE8329A82CA6D2D16F49B23E0
But different sources assign different statuses to it.
  • I found it as Mortal Kombat (World) (v1.1).md (the way it's listed in the submission) on some random site that doesn't explain anything.
  • I found it as Mortal Kombat (UE) (REV01) [c][!].gen in the GoodGen database. [!] means "The game is a verified good dump". [c] means "a cart known to not use Sega's standard checksum routine; emulators with an autofix checksum feature will need to have that feature disabled to run the game".
  • I found it as Mortal Kombat (USA, Europe) (Rev A) (Beta).md in the No-Intro database, which says "Putative Beta version (maybe not physical release), checksum is bad. Need to prove it existence by real cart dump".
  • Sega Retro considers this a good dump of v01. The source code of their page has explanations of what means what:
    {{
    	rom|
    	MD|
    	sha1=2c4a0618cc93ef7be8329a82ca6d2d16f49b23e0|
    	md5=e0bb4d00ea95b75aac52851fb4d8ee47|
    	crc32=33f19ab6|
    	size=2MB|
    	date=1993-09|
    	source=Cartridge|
    	comments=v01|
    	quality=good|
    	prototype=
    }}
Considering this mess, I wouldn't reject this run for using a bad dump or even a prototype. But switching to v00 in the future would probably be a good idea.

I might do a redo of this one, but on the 1.0 ROM. Probably not for a while, or even this year, but I might come back to this game and tinker a bit. I will definitely focus on speed, though.
alright
