Was reading a github issue when found this. Don't like the name "Playground". My usual minority opinion is playground, where children can play with various toys are kinda different than what this demo tier supposed to embrace. Isn't there any synonyms or just an area inside a playground that fits better, anything like sandbox?
Sandbox is userfiles where there's no rules at all (aside from legal ones). Reference to children is accurate and intentional https://tasvideos.org/WelcomeToTASVideos#Why

I have to admit I'm not a fan of accepting movies done on obscure barely available emulator forks either. If we want to do what we can to guarantee future sync, even tho with some games it may not be possible due to automatic updates, we want to only accept emulators that have some kind of a following on their own, just like with game hacks I mentioned recently.

Regarding the name "Playground": - It's way too similar to https://tasvideos.org/Movies-play Playaround - Reading through synonyms, Backyard would be more appropriate for this tier if I understood it.

Playground has arrived! It's still in an early stage of implementation, but we can start, well, playing with it now! Once it gets to a more fully implemented state, we'll officially announce it and start actively accepting PG-oriented submissions. For now, though, I'd like to stick to re-evaluating recently rejected submissions and current workbench submissions while we hash out the details and work to get this fully in place. More site prominence is already planned before an official "release", with a front page section at the very least and further expansion of game pages as a long term goal. Any other ideas or suggestions y'all may have, even if it's just submissions we should take a second look at, post away!

Alright I’m on my iPad so forgive me if this formatting is ass lol I like the implementation, but I’m not sure I fancy having everything centrally on one page. I think having game forums, which can not only have discussion forums for their playground runs pinned, but other threads for discussing technical aspects underneath, would be cool. Or even just a distinction between runs, I just think with this system it’s easy for runs to get lost. Unless I’m completely missing an intention here lol

We will promote Game pages more, they will contain all the relevant info for a given game: published movies, submissions, game resources, thread links, with links back to the Game page. Things will be easy to find after we improve the search and https://tasvideos.org/Games I'm not sure about having entire forum sections for any given game, with lots of threads. If something is very important, it should just be put on the game resource page.

Should we include ACE in Playground?

So I didn't really take part in any of this discussion when I really should have but I guess it's better late than never since implementation has stalled. I don't think having playground as a submission status can produce the desired actual listing of playground movies. There's no way for the site to know for example if two submissions share the same branch, short of say a branch label string comparison but that's not good coding and branch labels are easily changed. If all that was desired was for one playground run of each branch be displayed at all and given the playground submission status, this would be enough. However, for a leaderboard style implementation, it is not enough. A process similar to, but much simpler than publication is required. "Add Playground listing" should be somewhere as a page that people with the proper permissions can go to. The page should be a form with
  • Submission
  • Branch label
  • Any existing encodes (in case they are not in the submission text)
  • Any existing previous fastest playground listing that is beaten. I know people would like it handled automatically but this fails to take into account emulator differences, which is a common occurrence in TASing.
Anything I am missing?
[16:36:31] <Mothrayas> I have to say this argument about robot drug usage is a lot more fun than whatever else we have been doing in the past two+ hours
[16:08:10] <BenLubar> a TAS is just the limit of a segmented speedrun as the segment length approaches zero

UI for moving runs from Playground to publication would be my biggest want, here. Vice versa would be nice (nersa) for the extremely rare occasions where a rule-breaking run slips through the cracks, but absolutely not a requirement. Otherwise, that all looks good to me.

I don't have anything to add, as long as the goal is still to display those runs as a leaderboard in the end. So individual pages for PG movies would be a part of this goal, and they would allow us to not overcomplicate submission branching in general.

I'm not sure where to post this, but since it's somewhat related, regarding leaderboards: I just realized a leaderboard would be quite fun for things like those annual dream team contests, where groups compete with each other TASing a game they all (hopefully) never played before. I'm not sure how would a leaderboard work if trying to obsolete an existing movie, with input, strats, etc reused from potentially multiple different people though (unless each subsequent submission includes all the previous users, like those Sonic TASes? Would be interesting to see.) . Also a good place to throw all those SMB attempts there.
