Explanation
In this TAS, I finish the No Speed Limit 64 Rom Hack (Which removes the speed cap and makes the character move incredibly fast), with 1 Star. The slope dives make the character go abnormally fast, so in this case I don't recommend watching this if you have some sort of motion sickness.
Objectives and used Emulator
  • Emulator used: Mupen 64 1.0.9
  • Finish the game with 1 Star as fast as possible.

2:39 in the provided encode. If you're not going for speed (which you clearly aren't, I thought you were building speed to get past the DDD wall only to jump into it anyway), then why did you say you were in the submission notes?

Is there a reason why you don't go for 0 stars, which is probably possible with all that speed? I'm not an expert, so feel free to correct me. Like, I get that the goal is 1 star, but what's the main reason of choosing that goal?

Watching the video, it's clear this romhack could have some entertainment value with a decent goal choice and some tight tasing. This submission has neither: the goal choice seems arbitrary (why one star, when one key would be trivial with this romhack, and would almost certainly be the fastest?) and the routing absurd (of all 120 stars in the game, you pick a water star?); the tasing itself is also pretty dull, with lots of wasted movement and seemingly pointless action - I didn't notice any uncapped speed movement whatsoever in the chosen star, just lots of completely normal, boring swimming, with all the same routing and tasing problems from the rest of the run. This would make for a passable if uninspired playaround, but as a submission for publication it's a definite "no" from me.

I don't get this. Like the hack makes no sense when you account the current Publication: [4490] N64 Super Mario 64 "1 key" by Tyler Kehne, mkdasher, sonicpacker, snark, SilentSlayers, ToT, Plush, Dabs, Gaehne D, Eru, sm64expert, dar gos, Superdavo0001 & IsaacA in 04:18.98 And the previous major category: [2016] N64 Super Mario 64 "0 stars" by snark, Kyman, sonicpacker, MICKEY_Vis11189 & ToT in 05:02.25 And even when you compare to the one this directly challenges in a vanilla game: [987] N64 Super Mario 64 "1 star" by mr_roberts_z & Rikku in 06:42.65 Like the site has pre-existing TASes that are faster than this... unmodified. But also when searching for this on YouTube there's this TAS from 4 years ago demonstrating this hack: Link to video

"1 star" runs are supposed to get this star. For example, as Spikestuff linked above: [987] N64 Super Mario 64 "1 star" by mr_roberts_z & Rikku in 06:42.65 Also, speedrun.com has a defined "1 star" category, which is defined by the rule "DDD skip is banned", not "get 1 star". https://www.speedrun.com/sm64?h=1_Star-N64&x=7kjpp4k3-e8m7em86.9qj7z0oq

I'd question whether that should just be assumed to apply to romhacks as well, but point taken. Even given that, it doesn't excuse the actual execution of the level.
