Maybe 3-4 runs could be made for the game A first one, like PikachuMan said, where you unlock and beat Lost Levels to get to the credits (I really like the idea, and the credits song too). A second one, where you make maximum score out of every Challenge Level. To get the best score, Koopas shells are the best, since they can provide way more points than the timer (with stair glitch, last frame kicking, or just bouncing against a wall), so it would maybe get a bit boring since maybe half of the levels (16 out of 32) would be : get to a Koopa, kick it until timer goes down, run to flag. Thus, most of the time (let's say 260 seconds out of 300 on the timer) would be spent kicking a Koopa Shell. But since the time is still short, and 32 levels is not overnumbered, it would still be interesting to watch as maximizing the score is too damn challenging on this game. I was completely amazed and seduces when I saw the records of this guy : https://www.youtube.com/user/87ThePassenger/videos (he has the records on nearly every level, but the videos aren't really known) Maybe a third one where you only focus on Medals (Eggs, Red Coins, Score, Score Bar). Since some achievements can't be earned in TAS because they need a link connexion, I don't know what to think about an all achievement run. And a fourth for You Vs Boo completion (a TAS of it already exists). Also, for Koopas, I'm not sure about what strategy gives more points in a set amount of time between the last frame kick and the repeated bouncing on a wall.

I remember a video of a TAS where someone got like 1m+ points on 1 stage, but I can't seem to find it atm.

jlun2 : Here's one video of this glitch : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kT8Hf55pkzE It can be done in 7 levels : 3-1, 4-2, 5-1, 5-2, 6-2, 7-1 and 8-2. There are 9 other levels where you can make points with Koopa Jumping (at least in console, maybe 1-2 more with TAS since you can do it with less space). And the same guy as above made a video detailling his routes : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jUxvjWUxioY He also notes that the last frame kick is worth more than Koopa jumping, ans since there's at least a 2.000 points difference, it might also be true for TAS since the technique isn't drastically faster.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_O8ueLLmBK8 I made a TAS a while back with what I think is the highest score possible in 3-1 (using left+right). If you're precisely positioned, you can kick the shell and stop it in a single jump (like the staircase trick), cutting the iteration time down to 30 frames per hit; however, I think it's a pixel-perfect position, and you have a two-frame window to do the jumps (not a problem for TAS, at any rate). Last-frame hits are 8000 points every ~335 frames, IIRC, whereas perfect Koopa jumps are 500 points every 30 frames, so they are indeed more lucrative. Obviously, 5000-point Koopa jumps are worth a ton more, though.

http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1626100651/smbdx%20100%20run%20verification.tasproj.bk2 This is a verification movie which will have 2 photos in the album which are gotten by playing vs mode and by trading scores. Only way for the verification movie to be used is to implement infrared communication.

Getting 100% completion which requires beating the original game twice (warped and warp-less), getting all red coins, the target score, all Yoshi eggs, max score using the aforementioned trick in 3-1, Black Boo in all Vs. courses, beating the Lost Levels warp-less, and completing the album. If you want to do a TAS that goes for the end credits in the fastest time, do it from the beginning. Link to video Link to video These two videos compare the different versions. The US/European versions require using death as a shortcut, while the Japanese version does not. Use the Japanese version as it's about 27 seconds faster than the US/European versions.

Why do you have to die? Also what's the difference between luigi and mario?

High scores don't save unless you beat the game / Game Over in the US version. Mario and Luigi are no different, but it doesn't lose time to switch between levels. Not sure why the firework is needed in 1-1, seems like it would waste less time to just wait until 370. Notably, left+right wasn't used, and that allows you to accelerate a bit faster. Also, FWIW, album completion requires you to play against another player in VS. mode.

That's why I created a verification movie. Unfortunately the infrared function isn't implemented yet. If we get it implemented, then a 100% TAS is possible. There are a few TASes that used SRAM like Super Mario Kart. But that was old stuff.

From a WIP, why don't you kick the shell and go for fireworks? It's possible to get over 60,000 pts in 1-1.

http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/47379906146930089 I resynced the current warps run to run in the current dev build and also added inputs to the end to make sure You vs. Boo is unlocked. (In order to unlock You vs Boo, you need only score 100000 points in the normal game, but you have to end the game, either by completing it or game overing, to unlock it.) I'll try to see if I can get the you vs boo run working now. EDIT: And here it is: http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/47383954392527461 note that Bowser 2 is slightly different since the original desynced there. It's the same number of frames total though.

In You Vs. Boo, it's quicker to shoot Bowser with fireballs to skip the bridge collapse sequence, although it's a little bit slower to go through the course as Big Mario, crouch jump into a small crevice then a normal jump down to the floor. For Challenge Mode, kick the Koopa Troopas into other enemies for lots of points. Some levels need to be played through twice to get all the medals and get the max score possible. Link to video A 100% run recorded from reset/SRAM requires 1 vs. match played and traded scores once. First Quest Warped for Mario Award Second Quest Warpless for Bowser Award Defeat all kinds of enemies (including all 8 Bowsers) Get the vines, locate a hidden 1UP, Fireworks. Challenge for all medals and highest score for Toad and Peach Awards You Vs. Boo win and unlock Black Boo in all 8 stages Super Players Warpless for Yoshi Award Run ends at start of credits Complete album

I spent the time to make a TAS of all 32 levels in Challenge Mode with the goal of getting the highest score possible. Here's a playlist link containing all of them. Here are individual level links if you prefer: 1-1 - 165100 1-2 - 153750 1-3 - 117400 1-4 - 17550 2-1 - 268300 2-2 - 31400 2-3 - 38900 2-4 - 18100 3-1 - 1416450 3-2 - 325300 3-3 - 67500 3-4 - 18050 4-1 - 42700 4-2 - 1412050 4-3 - 79100 4-4 - 20100 5-1 - 1037700 5-2 - 1417650 5-3 - 116300 5-4 - 17700 6-1 - 43050 6-2 - 1362450 6-3 - 31300 6-4 - 17650 7-1 - 2066700 7-2 - 31200 7-3 - 98600 7-4 - 19550 8-1 - 204050 8-2 - 1424350 8-3 - 112000 8-4 - 215050 Total Score - 12407050 (in-game score caps at 9999990) Some of these are ~100% maxed out, while others should be very good but there could be possible improvements left. I also played with no restrictions, and used techniques such as left and right simultaneously for faster acceleration, pausing for RNG manipulation, and more. Enjoy!

What would make the most sense for an additional category regarding this game ? The "Challenge Mode" category which would complete the mode by reaching a score of 1,160,000pts in order to obtain the Toad Award in addition to the Peach Award ? Or An "All awards" category that would complete all possible awards in a single movie ?

"All awards" or Album% might be the easiest way to define a completionist goal for this game, although it might also make sense to one up it by adding "all levels" to the goal so that it includes the Boo levels and all Lost Levels without warping too, maybe even doing the full second loop of SMB instead of doing the first loop for that. A credit sequence is played after Lost Levels is beaten, so a run that starts from a clean SRAM, unlocks Lost Level ASAP, and then beats it can be seen as an "actual" any% run of this game that aims to reach its sole credit sequence.

Ok, I wanted to be sure when asking the question because an "all awards" category would have the consequences of visiting several times the levels of the game. A first time to complete the normal game until 8-4 (Mario Award), a second once to complete the second quest (Bowser Award) and a third time for the challenge mode (Peach and Toad Award).
