A New Year, new starts and a new TAS! That's right! A new Oddysee 100% PSX TAS is here thanks to a new strat discovered by Mirky now like to be called (TheStratMaster) on my Twitch streams. and Ultrastars3000, our longest serving French speedrunner in the connumity! The biggest change here are some things that I do in the Paramonian Temple, similar to what I do in one of the rooms in Bonewerkz. More info below.

DDG

This is what realisticaly sounds like when there's lots of Sligs in DDG mode! Be warned!

Technical Stuff

Emulator Used: Bizhawk v2.4
BIOS used: SCPH7003.bin
ROMS used:
  • Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee (USA)

Game Objectives

  • Rescues All 99 Mudokons (100% Completion)
  • Heavy Glitch Abuse
  • Uses Major Skips
  • Manipulates luck
  • Uses death to save time

Glitches Used

Death Delay (Sprite Corruption)

Often abbreviated as DDG it makes Abe invisible and can corrupt his sprite and eventually become invisible if he rolls into a bomb or jumping over a greande, allowing him to get past things that would kill Abe. Abe will die if he falls of a ledge or gets zapped. A video made by Sligfantry can show you how this glitch works:

Auto Turn Delay

This glitch works by standing on the edge of the ledge and pressing the down button quickly and run towards a spot where you would like to hoist down. You will need to press either 'left/down' or 'right/down' depending on which direction Abe was facing.

Stop Turn and Backwards Jump

By timing this glitch perfectly you can make Abe stop and turn. To set it up, Abe needs to be standing near a ledge (pressing up whilst turning around) you will be able to make Abe do a backwards jump. Notice that when you press the opposite direction to where Abe is standing at the incorrect frame, Abe will just jump up and stand. But if you time it perfectly, Abe will jump backwards and possibly jump to another screen. This will allow you to jump backwards to areas and skip Zulags. In a 100% run it will allow you to get to secret areas quicker and it skips a section of StockYards Escape after finishing the secret area. Sligfantry's video can show you how this glitch works: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DIo1TJUBGlo

Multiple Backwards Jump

Whilst performing a backwards jump, simply press up/jump and Abe will do a multiple backwards jump and in this run Abe will use it to skip Zulag 3 to get to Zulag 4.

Diagonal fall

This is done by combining the stop turn and the auto turn glitch. It is used as a time saver in Monsaic Lines and to save a frame in RuptureFarms.

Quick Portal Closure

This run contains a glitch which saves a few frames. You can free the Mudokon a few frames earlier than a normal rescue. Here is the before and after video on how it looks when using the glitch.

Jumping from a Roll

A new thing discovered by Himmdwag, in some parts of the game Abe will jump from a roll!

Fargrabs

In some places like RuptureFarms and Stockyards Return, Abe will do a fargrab on which will make Abe jump from a roll to the next ledge a few frames earlier than running and jumping to a ledge normally.

Improvements

Paramonian Temple

In the Boulder room, I make Abe say "Hello" like he does in a normal speedrun. As runners of the PC version now aims for frames instead of RTA.
In the room with the Paramite and the mines, as Abe pulls the elevator up to the top witth the mines, I do a Stop Turn towards the start of the level which Abe exits. This skips Abe entering the well and going all the way up to the top of the level.

Scrabanian Temple

This input file makes me save a few more seconds over the previous publication thanks to Ultra's new strat. Without his strat, this wouldn't have been a sub 1:04!

Closing Remarks

I need to thank Mirky and Ultrastars3000 for discovering of the new strat that saved me over 20 seconds against the previous run. My next run I may work on will be a 100% TAS of Exoddus on the PC version if I can do this using LibTAS, there may be a way! Alternatively, there is a new tool developed by NASJ whhich allows us to TAS Abe and re-record inputs. See his video below https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eTncoarRjy0
I hope you enjoy this run. Stay tuned for some more Exoddus and maybe even New 'n' Tasty TASes in the future!

ThunderAxe31: Claiming for judging.
ThunderAxe31: Setting to Delayed, due to potential improvements.
ThunderAxe31: Accepting as improvement of the current publication.

I finally decided to sit down and watch the entire run. Interesting...I found this TAS to be ODDly entertaining. :)
I recently discovered that if you haven't reached a level of frustration with TASing any game, then you haven't done your due diligence. ---- SOYZA: Are you playing a game? NYMX: I'm not playing a game, I'm TASing. SOYZA: Oh...so its not a game...Its for real? ---- Anybody got a Quantum computer I can borrow for 20 minutes? Nevermind...eien's 64 core machine will do. :) ---- BOTing will be the end of all games. --NYMX

Thanks for the first yes vote it means a lot! Soon I hope to get a Windows TAS going with Abe. Hopefully I can get Exoddus up and running. The any% TAS of Exoddus on PC has an exciting teleport glitch! There’s already a speedrun of it done by the legend LegnaX! https://youtu.be/ssCf2HFjnWg

OK this just came in on the Discord server, a new strat in Scrabanian Temple where you go behind the screen like Bonewerkz! Please could a mod put this on hold as I put this new strat in. Further investigations are needed we may find some more 'offscreen' gameplay like this one. https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/716751019685707838/1090714289469403136/2023-03-29_21-03-21-1.mp4 Update: you can't pull the lever off screen, it will crash the game.

I watched this but it was hard to see what was going on during DDG/invisibility.

Yeah it looks like I got some more invsibility inputs to do today but thankfully I can record an input movie of what happens when Abe is not behind screen so when Abe does go behind screen I can sync it together! The beauty of inputting text into a text file to operate a controller is amazing!
