Yeah now it's Sony and Microsoft. But personally I think Sony rules with their variety of games and Microsoft the evil one ;p.I have pity for Nintendo with such competitions around.I was a Nintendokiddie but now I'm a Sonymature.
But none can beat a good PC.

i never had this kind of problem. i had a NES, and then some friends had the MEGA DRIVE wich was "clearly better". i played a lot of both of them untill i got a super nes. then i played super nes and genesis only, never had a problem with it, both have great games, just the mega drive controller kind of sucks, i think. then i got a playstation, it was great till it dismantled like they forgot to tighten the screws on the factory. maybe it's because i used a lot of copied cds, but hey shhhhh it broke in 2 years, i always used unlicensed games on nes, genesis, super nes and they never complained.
The Genesis/mega drive controller was too bulky for me as a kid, although i grew used to it, and even brought a 6 button control pad (having six buttons awkwardly placed scared me, but it let me play Street Fighter and Art of Fighting Properly). What i really loved was the mega CD (Sega CD) add on...... Sonic CD owned, and I rate it up there with Sonic 3 with the S&K pack.
As far as controllers go, I'd have to say Sega has had the worst run: SMS, Genesis, SATURN... man that Saturn controller was crap. DC wasn't so bad though.
If Microsoft is the bad guy now, they're pretty lame bad guys. I've been playing oldschool NES/SNES/SMS/Genesis games on my Xbox without a hardware mod for the last few months. Once you get used to it, the XB controller is much better than a PC gamepad for emulation, and there are shortcut buttons for fast-forwarding, etc.
Obviously this doesn't work for recording yet, but soon I hope they implement it.
since were talking about control pads heres what i think. EVERY console has always had bad control pads that felt uncomfortable at first. but eventualy your hands changed shape to use them lol. being that i have big hands, i feel like i'm gonna break every damn controler i pick up. wtf is it with people wanting tiny controlers? i want one that i can use well without having to twist and curl my fingers to push a button. is it really hard for these people to realise that? but if i had to pick 1 control that feels the best, i'd have to pick xbox. so far this is the only one i'm able to hold well enough without problems. but thats all i like about it, button layout sucks, the whole controller design sucks but its easy to hold for me

the sega genesis controller design is great, there was a NES version in Brazil named Phamtom system that used the same design as the genesis 3 button controller, and it was very good. the problem is that on the genesis, the inner rubber of the button is maybe too hard, so you can't feel whether u have pressed the button or not. it doesn't have that pleasant button pressed feel, it feels more like you are pressing a ball of paper....

heh
i wasnt really serious :)
i'm sure you all knew what i meant
i liked the snes gamepad best, and i HATE any pad that forces you to use a stick for movement (or anything really), this includes the n64 and all 64bit consoles out there. also pressure sensitive buttons suck if you dont need them (it just made me throw out double dash on the cube, i cant work my magic on those R and L buttons like i did on the snes)
the snes pad was just right imo. easy accessible buttons, all 8 of them and a fast response (no pressure sensitivity).
In England at least, it was always infinitely more popular than the SNES.
I've noticed that (as far as stereotypes go) Europe are generally Sega fans, America are Nintendo fans, Korea are online-PC-game fans, and Japan generally like all consoles but not PCs as much at all.
'Course, these stereotypes could all just be in my imagination, it does vary from person to person after all. ^_^
I remember the old SNES vs. Genesis war. Sega would make commercials trashing the Super Nintendo's "slow and obsolete CPU." Genesis was a leading 16-bit console for awhile until around 1994 when SNES released games like Donkey Kong Country.
I always thought of Japan as favoring the "hometown teams" namely Sony, Sega, and Nintendo (moreso the latter), as they hate the X-Box. America I figure used to favor Nintendo, but now are more Sony fans than anything, though the others certainly do well here... Well, not Sega. Sega did terrible ever since they released the Sega CD (which had a total of, by my count, six good unique games: Sonic CD, a Gauntlet clone,(edit) a Master of Monsters clone (/edit), and three Working Designs games).

In Brazil, the sega master system (MEKA) and the sega genesis ARE STILL SOLD IN STORES because a company named TEC TOY was the only licensed videogames dealer. all NES stuff was pirated, copied hacked and the alike. so, of course, the parents would buy things on the store, not a shadowy corner on the street, therefore sega games were more popular than nintendo ones. But around 1995 playtronic was created and now nintendo had a company representing it here. but piracy was already installed and no matter what they try to do, it's now a way of life: unlock the videogame zone system (there are tons of people who can do it) and u can play pirate games. i don't know any videogame here that hasn't been unlocked.
Playstation 1 is the shit here because cds are like 3 US dollars so everyone has a playstation. that and the fact that we are crazy for winning eleven hehe...
but these new videogames are way too expensive for us, they get here at extremely high cost (like 4 times more than what one has to pay in USA), wich is very prohibiting. it seems that the videogames companies want to close their eyes to the reality in brazil. we are hardcore videogame buyers, but we buy stuff from taiwan and china because it's 10x cheaper than the original games. many people are switching to computers instead of videogames, and downloading games on the internet.... :P
for those and some other reasons, the brazilian market is starting to make it's own games. what i have seen so far is not very good yet, but the quality is fastly increasing, you can expect to hear about some games made in brazil soon. if don't need to pay whatever price to play a game damnit, we will copy the games and will make some of our own!!! to hell with sony and microsoft
I prefer SNES than Genesis since there's more interesting titles on that one and the SNes controller is a lot lot lot lot better than Sega Genesis one.
I think the best game controller was the Genesis 6-button controller. The D-Pad on that one was a lot more comfortable/fluid than any controller I have ever used...ever.
It is interesting how people's opinions of which consoles/technologies are/were the best were almost completely due to business and politics outside of their control, like with NOA in the US and Tec Toy in Brazil, and other things such as VHS vs Betamax, Square vs Enix, and the list goes on.
