Submission Text Full Submission Page
Some years ago, I set out to make the most entertaining playthrough of Def Jam: FFNY as possible. And lo behold, I think I did an alright job. This TAS is about 7 years old, and remains one of my more viewed and well received TAS I've made over the years. I never submitted beyond userfiles upon completion, however, because it didn't fit with stars and wasn't purely speed so couldn't go straight for the vault. However, with the changes that have taken place to the submission ranking system over the years and haven spoken to a couple of judges on whether it might pass the process, I think this TAS would be a perfect fit for the alternative category. (There's also been no more TAS of this game besides 1 abandoned project by DwainiumB, plus some Brazilian arcade mode playthroughs of the PSP port)
In this movie, I aim for maximum user entertainment while keeping a brisk pace. I take a few detours throughout to alter my character appearance, upgrade stats, change my moveset, extend combos to impossibly long lengths against the AI, take on every single fight in story mode (except for postgame bonus fights, because I did not use a save file) and just generally make a joke of the opponents trying to take me down. You'll see all the biggest mainstream rappers of the 00s get their faces bloodied with combos and reactions that human players simply cannot replicate, as well as setups and tricks that are impossible without other players helping or TAS manipulating the AI in just the right manner!
This is essentially a feature length film, clocking in at 1:46:29.58! Despite all the detours taken for entertainment, this TAS actually stood as the Hard any% WR for 6 years, until being beaten by the runner togemme in 2023 (who took no detours and optimized purely for speed, foregoing entertainment). As of now, this TAS is the 2nd fastest Hard any% run of this game. I hope everyone enjoys and gets a kick out of one of my favorites from my backlog.
  • Some more detailed notes on tricks and gameplay coming soon

eien86: Claiming for judging.

eien86: Waiting for the author to find out exactly what Dolphin version was used to create the movie and sync it himself. KusogeMan is assisting him in this endeavor

If this is the run of Togemme you're referring to, then the difference in time is huge. The level of speed/entertainment tradeoffs here is not even close to your TAS of UMKT or to the likes of it. I found the fights sorta entertaining, and I would vote Yes, if the TAS was around 40 minutes longs. Voting Meh, unfortunately.
TASing is like making a film: only the best takes are shown in the final movie.

we're still waiting for the correct emulator settings for sync, the iso matches the movie but the emulator didn't actually run the movie despite 1 controller no memory card bein settings
TAS i'm interested: Megaman series, specially the RPGs! Where is the mmbn1 all chips TAS we deserve? Where is the Command Mission TAS? i'm slowly moving away from TASing fighting games for speed, maybe it's time to start finding some entertainment value in TASing.

I got the farthest in Dolphin 5.0-97, which is what the movie calls out by commit hash. It also kept complaining until I switched to proprietary DSP ROMs. Text disappears in the game unless Microsoft Driver is used. But I was unable to sync this movie fully. With OpenGL or MS driver, it desyncs somewhere after 100k frames.
Warning: When making decisions, I try to collect as much data as possible before actually deciding. I try to abstract away and see the principles behind real world events and people's opinions. I try to generalize them and turn into something clear and reusable. I hate depending on unpredictable and having to make lottery guesses. Any problem can be solved by systems thinking and acting.
