Well, here we go again. Donkey Kong Country Returns is a side-scrolling platformer that was released in 2010. Donkey Kong has a mission, and that is to get his stolen Banana Hoard back from thieves known as the Tiki Tak Tribe. As seen, he takes this quite literally. There are 8 different worlds that Donkey Kong goes through to progress closer & closer to the Hoard. However, this time, the hoard isn't his main objective; rather, he plays every level in the game.

Game objectives

  • Emulator used: Dolphin 2407
  • Aims for the fastest time
  • Takes damage to save time
  • Uses a theoretic route

Comments

2 years ago I submitted (looking back at it) a very weak TAS of this game. That's only because I knew little to nothing about it's timesave strats. Now, I learned a lot about this game and it's timesaves during this run. While it isn't optimized to the bone, it was one hell of a learning experience. I think about doing this again very soon. I'm glad I was able to run this back.

Some stages that had my most concern

World 1-6: Crazy Cart

Too much of the beginning optimal cart movement will make me short on the K so I had to adjust. Other than that, I'm sure 1-6 is OK.

World 2-6: Blowhole Bound

Introducing the new theorized trick: Blowhole rolling, where you can roll on the whale after activating the blowhole when it's tilted diagonally upwards. I haven't been able to successfully nail it in any other spot besides the very beginning, & when grabbing the N. It'd be nice to find more spots to do it in.

World 6-6: Crumble Canyon

I absolutely love the 6-6 platform phase glitch. Unfortunately, it's a bit slower than the original route because the ball is supposed to start moving as soon as you reach the first tilting platform. I realized this heading into world 7-3, but I accepted that, & didn't look back.

World 7-7: Music Madness

I don't know if I did too much slowdown after the 2nd checkpoint & could've made some more damage-boosting manipulation or not. Looks fairly optimized if you want to continue to keep Diddy, but maybe I could've lost him to save time.

World 8-1: Furious Fire

That double pound looks ridiculous when trying to keep Diddy after grabbing the K. I think the thing around the double pound is that you're supposed to be standing in a certain spot while being able to create a pound without the pound animation during the first time, then after 5 frames, a new pound begins with the actual pound animation starting. The way I did it was the only way I could do it whilst carrying Diddy. I'm afraid there might've been a faster way of doing it. Not sure right now.

Other important things

The Route (Good news for future runs.)

It seems the route is faster in this way especially since you don't need to do what I did at the end of World 1-1 & World 1-6. That wastes about a good 480 frames getting the 30 extra banana coins that I didn't even need. I got those just incase I didn't have enough within the progress of the run & feared that I would've had to start over or waste time trying to grab enough banana coins. (Could've used some of those coins for banana juice for levels like 8-1 lol)

Triple Gong Pounding

This trick is seen in World 3-5, World 5-4, World 8-K, & World 6-5. Triple Gong Pounding is done by standing at the very left edge of the gong. It's very hard to get it right especially since you're not always at the very edge of the gong on your very first frame you get to ground pound it. Getting more height in some situations would be better than just landing right on the gong. I don't know the proper inputs to trigger Triple Gong Pounding, but what I do know is that if you do, you press left+down (after shaking) for a few frames (maybe 3 or 4 or until you align at the edge of the gong again) & repeat those steps until you complete it. It's hard to explain but I hope this is enough to edify.

Running the DTM

I deleted my save.bin & my banner.bin files when making this movie & that seemed to be the only way I was able to run the movie perfectly without any desyncs. Was I supposed to do that or not? I'm a little curious.

Game Time

To avoid any confusion, the video provided uses In-game time & in-game frames rather than the movie's frames & movie time. OFC there's way more to the movie than what I said there

To Conclude

This run took 3 months, a bad desync fix, & a constant motive to complete. It wasn't so easy to make, & I acknowledge that this run can be improved. (Maybe about a minute more.) I was a little nervous to submit this movie too, but looking back at it, I still liked the way it turned out to be. Almost all levels are pretty optimized & there are new strats that can be tested in RTA. Would do this again sometime.

feos: Claiming for judging.
feos: Every room is consistently faster than in the human record (which was done on WiiiUVC so loading times are shorter there). The goal of only getting 100% instead of 200% is perfectly fine because it's weird to require several playthroughs for a standard goal, and the Mirror Mode can also just be played on its own anyway. Sync has also been solved for a setup done from scratch (giant thanks to mohoc!), so we don't depend on external files with magic contents. Accepting.

why is there no puzzle piece? i never 100% this game so i dont know what the puzzle piece was supposed to unlock then lol
I want all good TAS inside TASvideos, it's my motto. TAS i'm interested: Megaman series, specially the RPGs! Where is the mmbn1 all chips TAS we deserve? Where is the Command Mission TAS? i'm slowly moving away from TASing fighting games for speed, maybe it's time to start finding some entertainment value in TASing.

Puzzle Pieces only unlock the Artwork & The Diaromas in the Extras > Image Gallery/Diaroma Gallery section when choosing game files. In the speedrunning community, Puzzle Pieces were always deemed as useless to the 100% category.
I remember 5 years ago when I was new here, and kept PMing people thinking that was the only way to send replies in the discussion forums. Also thought my SCD++ TASes were legit. All 3 of them are flukes. I was an idiot. XD

I tried to verify this TAS, but got no luck. Reviewers and judges already know about that, but I post it here as well, in case if someone unaware comes across. So, it always desyncs around the frame 93900. The cursor moves to the level 3-2, but the player doesn't start the level when it's possible. On the encode that's at 26:03. I see people share this info in submission threads, so my hardware is GTX 1060 and Ryzen 3800X. I tried deleting save.bin and banner.bin whichever I found in /Dolphin-2407-x64/User/Wii/title/..., but it doesn't change anything. Well, the very first run desynced, so I don't think anything would change with these files present. Should they be deleted in the middle of the playback? The ROM is "Donkey Kong Country Returns (USA) (En,Fr,Es) (Rev 1)", but in RVZ format, not ISO. Converting it to ISO doesn't change anything. I checked the MD5 hash of the movie in DTM_Editor_1.6. Even though it matches the hash of the ROM, Dolphin still says the checksums don't match. What perplexed me is that Texture Cache is set to Medium by the movie. I tried changing it to Safe, but it doesn't affect anything (DAA). - SD card settings DAA. - Speeding up the emulation DAA. - Config -> Wii -> Aspect Ration DAA. It opens the game in 16:9 anyway. P.S: portable.txt is present in the Dolphin folder. This is not first movie I verify
TASing is like making a film: only the best takes are shown in the final movie.

Wow. I really do not know what it could be then. I had desync issues when switching from my laptop to my pc for dumping purposes back in August. Same emulator, rom, everything. I got it to work one time & all has been good since, but since what I suggested doesn’t even work, I genuinely don’t know & what else I did for the movie to run so perfectly. Not even cheats were on. I just knew this would probably be a freaking problem as I was finishing up the game but I thought I was overthinking it. What can happen now?

Let's wait for other members to try. Like, c'mon, people! It's Nintendo's title! Donkey Kong! You should be obsessed with it and give it quick attention =D

Hello TheRandomMaster! Over the past four days I have been trying to sync your movie, unfortunately without success. At first I ran into the same desync as Dimon12321: at frame 93823 the ''2'' press is present in the movie file but it seems to be ignored by the game. With extra waiting time and some hex editing I managed to resync the movie, only to get further desyncs at the end of 3-2 (solved) and at the beginning of 3-5 (still unsolved), again from dropped inputs. Although a resync via hex editing might be theoretically doable, it would take an absurd amount of time and effort with a lot of noticeable extra waiting time here and there.. Potentially more effort and a less pretty end result than '''simply''' redoing the TAS from the 3-2 desync. Of course, it would be better for everyone if redoing the movie could be avoided. So far 99.9% of the movie seems to run fine, and all deyncs have been caused by some dropped input. There might be an emulator setting that we missed. Could you go back to the setup with which you made your encode and take screenshots of Help > About, Options > Configuration > General / Audio / Wii / Advanced, and all four tabs in Options > Graphics Settings? With the Help > About tab especially we would be able to confirm that the 2407 release was used and not some of the dev builds. (And as a side note, in the event that we don't find anything and the movie has to be redone, I would be happy to help out - for instance by verifying sync gradually.)

Would you like me to upload screenshot after screenshot here, or upload them to a site & give you a link?

Success! After following the settings from your screenshots, the movie synced first try with no issue. Thank you for sharing your settings with such responsiveness. In the next few days I will narrow down which settings are required.

After some more testing, we identified the Wii system country as the cause for desyncs. This piece of information is not included in the .dtm file, so it must be set manually. Since there is no country setting in the emulator options, I put detailed instructions in the Sync Notes. Thanks to CasualPokePlayer, the Wii system country is about to be added to the .dtm format and thus should no longer be a cause for desyncs in future Dolphin releases. https://github.com/dolphin-emu/dolphin/pull/13257

A Country issue?! Well I'd be dang. I never seen this type of problem before on TASvideos

I don't know this game, and the goal does not seem to be explained in the submission, so I just looked at https://www.speedrun.com/dkcr. Is it correct that 100% is "Beating every level" and "Collecting every KONG letter", and then you get extra 100% after beating the game the second time in Mirror Mode? Does the game show an ending after 100%? EDIT: Oh I see, they just call 100% "all stages" even tho it also indeed includes all letters.
Warning: When making decisions, I try to collect as much data as possible before actually deciding. I try to abstract away and see the principles behind real world events and people's opinions. I try to generalize them and turn into something clear and reusable. I hate depending on unpredictable and having to make lottery guesses. Any problem can be solved by systems thinking and acting.
