Hello! This is my first TAS. In this game we take on the role of a protagonist who couldn't get into university and spends his gap year becoming the fastest racer in Japan. I couldn't find any complete playthrough of this game other than the treasure trove of information over at the Zero4Champ fansite so I made one! Since there is little info in English for this game, I wanted to make a TAS that serves as both a walkthrough and translation of the game for others who may want to give it a try. To that end I also did the optional sidequests that unlock other content in the game.
Main Story Flow
Driving School
Before the game can really start, both a practical and written exam have to be passed. The instructor gives 20 commands and 18 have to be correct, but the test does not end until all 20 commands are given. During the written exam, one of three possible answer keys is chosen by an RNG value that changes each frame.
Sports Car Exhibition
A required cutscene where Akazawa looks at cars, meets his soon-to-be rival Daisuke and loses a race to him.
Buying a car/parking space
Akazawa visits a car shop but can't buy a car because he doesn't have a parking space. He visits a local old man in the neighborhood. Several times during the course of the game the player will be asked to point at the screen with a cursor where they want to check. Some time is usually spent at these scenes outlining the correct area to pick.
During Tune Roulette several slices of the wheel offer two prizes but Traction Control is still the most expensive item, allowing us to fully tune a Civic from the start of the game.
Grass Race
Only one race has to be won at the amateur races down at the wharf to continue the story.
Zero-Yon License
Winning the first three (out of four) races at the Zero-Yon License race ends the day earlier.
Harbor Building
The first dungeon of the RPG portion of the game. All floors are fully explored here for the salary bonus, plus exploring floor 3 fully is the trigger that unlocks the old lady's equipment shop in Motomachi. There's no magic this early in the game.
Most RNG runs off of a single value (0x32) and a lot of manipulation can be done by waiting a certain number of frames. A second RNG value (0x31) occasionally requires opening and closing the menu to bypass an encounter. The enemy encounter table is frame-based RNG so some encounters could be manipulated into quicker ones.
Meeting Ai
Ai has to be met once at Motomachi before meeting Sayaka. She rejects Akazawa outright at this time but becomes important later.
Sayaka's Quiz
Sayaka becomes required around rank 200. She gives a personality quiz. The first five questions are each pulled from a pool of three questions, all of them about a journey to defeat a demon king. The last question is fixed and worth the most points. Once her approval is won, Akazawa can continue to rank 150ish.
2000cc Shop
After reaching Class C around rank 150, Ai can be dated by giving her a diamond ring bought at Hiroko's shop (left side of Motomachi). All four locations must be visited before she rejects Akazawa and tells him about her brother's high-end racing shop. Ai can also be dated by getting to Class B and visiting her around 5 times while offering 'cheap junk' but of course it's slow.
Kowloon Building
The main goal is a mad dash to the Madder Sword on Floor 13 for Akane. Once she has that she can cast spells freely while the party levels up enough to learn better magic. A Sleep Cane is picked up to put enemies to sleep early on as they can be manipulated to stay asleep as long as necessary before Akane learns that spell herself. Marian gets her attack buff spell at level 40 at which point we go Golden Woman hunting. They're worth tens of thousands of exp and lots of money.
On Floor 16, a fixed encounter near the stairs down provides us with a convenient Golden Woman grinding spot to get the rest of the money needed. Selling most of our equipment at the store after clearing the building gets the last money needed.
Bookstore and Harbor Tower
Another cutscene with a 'find the right part of the image' included. Akazawa meets the champ and his future tuner.
Beating Daisuke
Daisuke only becomes possible to beat after Akazawa loses in class A and gets told about VHT. Once that happens Daisuke finally becomes human, but that means two trips through the Class A race to beat him. Beating him is the point of no return for the VHT scam so we do the optional events first. Getting scammed by VHT, meeting Nae, the face swap event, meeting the Katashina siblings, playing the tank game and unlocking the mahjong parlor all fall under that umbrella.
Race Against Champ
The NSX-R could beat the champ in 3 rounds instead of 5 but the price difference is 6+ million yen, too much to overcome even with fast Golden Woman battles.
The RPG could certainly be improved. Skipping the drop from Floor 13 to 8 in Kowloon and finding more aggressive battles for Akane to win with magic would likely have been faster than clearing the whole floor and grinding along the way.
Because all the optional events were clustered together, some time had to be wasted after meeting Nae. The two security shifts are the harbor building were the quickest way to move in-game time along before she calls back.
Many thanks to Mr. Big for all the data he compiled on his fansite as it proved an invaluable resource while working out the game's flow and events.
