Just wondering how many people speak what.
Seems the majority of the people here are in Europe somewhere, and most likely enjoy coding, sports, or spouting random things in the IRC channel. =D
And a lot of you seem to speak japanese. O_o

My native language is Dutch, but I also speak English. Besides those languages which I speak well, I also know a little bit of French and German. Both negligibly little, though.
I speak English fluently. I can read French fairly reliably, and I know enough Japanese to play through RPGs if I have a dictionary at hand. I can't speak these things, of course.
I also know bits and pieces of Esperanto, Tagalog, Mandarin Chinese, and one of the Elvish languages from Lord of the Rings.

/me speaks and writes Finnish as native language, writes and reads English quite well and listens to Japanese sometimes understanding a word or two.
I also can figure out a few things about Swedish and Estonian (for Estonian being a cousin language to Finnish), but as for writing/speaking, I think my Japanese is better than my Swedish. I think my Swedish is only a little bit better than a random South-European language, say Spanish. For Japanese (both writing and reading), I like to use various tools available on computers (for speaking, I'm on my own and my lack of vocabulary usually hits me much earlier than the lack of grammar). Occassionally an English-Finnish dictionary is helpful too, because of the massively huge vocabulary in English.
I absolutely do not read or understand Jacobian English with anything near fluency. I think I can even read Middle English easier than Jacobian - that way it has more French in it. (I say because I am struggling through the Book of Mormon right now and not really enjoying myself.. do they really want me to join their sect if they can't give me a text I can actually read?)

I think it is more "Tell me what languages you speak" than "Teach me to speak Japanese".....

My native language is Icelandic, in addition to that I speak/write English pretty good (I think). Also, I know enough Danish to read most books if I have a dictionary, but spoken Danish is way over my head. :o
I'm not sure if it counts, but I've also learned a very small amount of Spanish. If I had a good dictionary, I might be able to crunch my way through an easy book very slowly.
I was born in Estonia, so I speak estonian, but I was 1 years old when we moved to Finland, so I speak finnish.
I also speak english quite well, and I speak a little bit of swedish.
I'd like to learn japanese.

I speak English fluently. I also speak French and Greek fairly well, along with some German and Spanish to get by whenever I'm in Europe/Mexico. I plan to learn Russian within the next 10 years.
Anyone wanting to learn a language might check out this site that I help maintain. The bbs has a slew of web links for learning Japanese, and many slews of things for other languages.
there's a very small french community throughout the forums.
usually, english then spanish or german (neighbors...) are taught at school here, but only the first remains spoken/used after graduating.
japanese is becoming a fashion since animation/manga has spread quite well in the occidental countries lately.
but most fans quits rather quickly since kanjis are way too hard to learn :)
speaking of otakus/nerds, there's a Zorg community here, as I can see :)

I speak Finnish as my native language but somehow I can express myself easier in English (you can't very well see this from my text, though, since I'm a pretty hasty writer). I will start studying to become an English teacher next fall. I can also communicate fairly well in Swedish and a little bit in German.

I've never been out of Brazil, so i speak portuguese fluently. I had to learn english fast in order to play things like Actraiser, so there you go, fluent English :)
Due to similarity to portuguese, i can read a good amount of Spanish, and understand a word or two of french ad italian.
And i studied Japanese for 2 years but i had to stop due to lack of free time. I will continue studying it some day even if it means alone at home. I believe i'm in the same level as bisqwit here.
I'm from Sweden so I speak Swedish thus I understand Norwegian and Danish. I understand all English and speak quite good (I think), despite my former english teacher telling me the the opposite. (Ok, I'm not that good but I don't suck.) I also speak a little German and probably understand as much German as Dromiceius understands Japanese, i.e. good enough to read a book using a dictionary occasionally. I know enough French to live in France as a turist a few fays.
If I had started to use the Internet a few years earlier I would speak much better english.
I suck at English, and I suck at Swedish, and I can't understand any other language, I tried spanish in school, but that didn't go too well.
So... I guess it's really hard to communicate with me. ;D

I'm in contact with a lot of swedes/norweigans in my part time job, so I'm picking up on that as well.
Also have the power to say 16 words in spanish.. weee... Understand quite some more due to my colombian aunt though.

I was born in Romania but have lived in the U.S. most of my life. Therefore, I'm fluent in English and probably know enough Romanian to survive, although I wouldn't say I'm fluent in it. I've taken some Latin. I might be able to figure out some words in Romance languages like French, Italian, and Spanish, since they're derived from Latin and similar to Romanian to some degree. My plans are to learn Greek and Hebrew sometime, in addition to learning more Latin.
BTW, if any of you want to learn Greek or Latin, I recommend Textkit.
That's cool - I've just started an Icelandic course myself last fall. :) It's only one unit (2,5 hours) every other week, so I don't know much yet, but I'm determined to learn more. ^_^
Outside of that, I already speak German and English; I learnt French and Russian in school as well, but forgot pretty much all of that again. Oh yeah, and Latin, but that's not typically a language you actually *speak*, so I'm not including that. :)
I also want to learn other languages (most notably Swedish and Finnish, maybe also Faroese) in the future, but for now, I'll focus on Icelandic.

Heh, thanks. ^_^ I feel the same way about German, incidentally - if I hadn't grown up with it, I certainly wouldn't want to learn it. Not that it's not a nice language, but.. well. ^_^
