As everyone who has ever taken a Japanese class knows, they consist of three kinds of nerds: 1) anime/manga nerds 2) martial arts nerds 3) video game nerds The simple reason being that a lot of video games are made in Japan; Nintendo, SEGA, Sony plus a bucketload of video game producers being japanese companies and all. A lot of games never make it out of there so the only way to play them is by knowing Japanese. That's my take on it anyway.

One additional reason: - chinese characters are interesting, but chinese is impossible to pronounce. Of course the other reasons are present too... ;)

Yep, that article is great. Even from my limited point of view I recognize much more truth in it than the author admits. :)
