I know it's been skirted all over the forum, but I wanted to make a topic where people could talk about their gamepad / joypad experiences on emulators. Honestly, I think it's awesome that electronics manufacturers have enhanced the capability and longevity of (old) console systems to be able to be played on the PC/Mac ... usually via USB. Actually, I must admit, I was thinking of getting a gamepad for the PC... for emulation, but then I realized that I had all these extra PS2 controllers about, and wanted to know what - if any - controllers are used by the gaming niche of the board.

hardware is usually expensive in brazil, and the software i download aka i have no money. so, no, i don't have a gamepad (actually i have a 2 buttons one that is over 10 years old)

I use a Gamepad Pro USB.. it's basically a PSX controller but with a crappy circular thing instead of four directional buttons or a D-pad.. so I'd prefer a SNES, PSX, or PS2 controller.

I use computer controllers so much that I have to buy a new every year. So far I had : Gravis gamepad Pro USB: Looks exatly like a PS1 controller. The d-pad broke. And USB connection had a habit of disconnecting in the middle of the game. Axis pad pro : Looks like Dual Shock controller, without the rumble. The left analog stick got too loose. Thrustmaster FireStorm Dual Power 2 : Looks like a Dual Shock with 2 additionnal shoulder buttons. Great controller except for the lack of rumble feature under Windows XP. The left analog stick lost the up direction. Thrustmaster FireStorm Wireless : Like TFSDP2 but wireless. Great for playing on the TV. The major problem is that you the virtual mouse and virtual keyboard drivers are buggy. Do not install them. All these controllers have one common flaw : the d-pad sucks. For games like Super Metroid, I use a SNES pad connected to the parallel port. And I also have a modified NES parallel port adapter to plug a PowerPad. I could plug a Zapper, but I don't know if it works.

I use my PS2 Soul Calibur II joystick (not the crappy one you may have seen at game stores, but an awesome Japanese-style one made by Hori). For anyone who has Windows 2000/XP and wants to use a PS controller, don't bother with USB converters. There is something else I use which is far better and cheaper, albeit a little more complex. First, go to http://www.psxpad.com and install the driver from that site. Then, go HERE and order one of these. Note that it connects to the printer port. Finally, when you get that little adapter, plug it into the printer port and plug your controller into the adapter. If you have said driver installed, the controller should be working fully now. This thing is beautiful, all the directions and buttons work perfectly and there's NO input lag as far as I can tell. If only PS2-to-Dreamcast or Xbox converters were this good... -Josh

I use an ancient M$ Sidewinder. It's never let me down and I like the feel of it. Though I don't use it for speedruns, IMO nothing beats the keyboard for having full control. It's just that gamepads are more comfortable. Especially when my wrists hurt. If only windows could be fully controlled with a gamepad... ;-p

I'm buying an adapter soon so I can once again play old games with my PS-pad and Stepmania with my dance mat, old one got broken. :( And playing with a joypad is SO much better than playing with the keyboard...

Typically, I use a standard PS2 dualshock hooked up to my PC through a USB bridge. 'course, for some games, the regular pad just isn't enough and I opt to play with my cuddly half-metre wide arcade board. Both sticks are good, if for entirely different things.

snes pad is the best imo, but for emulation i use keyboard and any pad with a stick should be burned, killed and destroyed (twice, just to be safe). i hate all of them, bah.
