It's the region the game was released. U = US. E = Europe

(U)nited States (NTSC, English) (E)urope (PAL) (J)apan (Japanese, NTSC) This information is available online in various places. Googling would probably have found it.

In general, the NTSC version of the rom is used for the games played on this site due to the higher framerate/refreshrate (60hz vs 50hz) One notable exception is Rygar, to exploit a trick that allows you to jump a gap and skip a large portion of the game.

I was going to direct this question to the FAQ but I just checked it and didn't find this useful fact in there. Can someone maybe slap this in there somewhere? Actually, can I do that?

I think Bisqwit has consciously ignored this and other ROM issues because of legal stuff. He doesn't want to be encouraging downloading ROMs off the net instead of dumping them.

That info is in DesyncHelp, though, because I put it there. I don't see why it should be an issue since every submission has (requires, even) the ROM version to be specified, and the movie entries have that info in the header as well. The GoodWhatever sets keep track of ROMs you dumped yourself with the (U)-(J)-etc. specifications too. I don't see the harm in helping people with it.
