  • Time Trial mode
The Tetris and Tetris Attack runner did it again, this time on the Nintendo 64.
Tetrisphere isn't exactly like Tetris, but it's still a puzzle game involving a sphere. The main objective is to dig through several block layers (on the sphere) to reach the core, by dropping blocks to align 3 of the same type so they disappear.
I decided to do Time Trial mode, for a few reasons:
  • Other modes like Rescue, Puzzle and Hide&Seek have many levels and could get long and repetitive
  • Time Trial is the only mode where scoring matters, since you only get 5 minutes to score as much as possible, so I can show off instead of repeatedly rushing to the core
  • It's the shortest mode, yet still long enough to show off
I found 2 glitches while doing the run:
  • Input is accepted every frame but is only handled (by sum) about every 5 frames (varies), when the game status updates. I can abuse this when sliding a block to cut around corners, by moving it through another between two updates, the same way a character in another game could go through a wall by moving too fast.
  • If I move a block where it can fall, but hold another to slide right after, the block will stay up in air. This was useful a few times to setup gravity combos faster.
There's no luck manipulation in this run. The block randomization can be manipulated, but only 3 blocks in advance and I haven't checked exactly how. It wouldn't be too useful here anyway, as it's hard to plan 3 blocks in advance, and a large part of the scoring was done using the wildcard block to slide everything.
The hard part about making this run was that I had to plan every single move (what to do next, where can I do another gravity combo, how to do it, etc.), which was hard sometimes when I couldn't get a good view of the level.
I also had to do everything with perfect timing, which again had to be tested on every action (move, hold/release, drop) because there was a varying delay (sometimes 10-15 frames) caused by update lag.

Summary

Level 1

I max out the bonus multiplier early (20x, there's 2 ways to boost it and each must be done 10 times), then go all out to destroy blocks for the rest of the level.
Only one core piece (out of 100) needs to be cleared to finish the level, but since it waits for the combo to finish and I go too fast for that to ever happen, I clear the entire level. Well, almost ... a few blocks were left, all of the same type while I was stuck with the opposing type with nowhere to drop it at.
1001 combo, 93% cleared
  • Score: 45 639 900
  • Time: 0:03:27

Level 2

Again, I concentrate on clearing the entire level fast, and this time succeeded, leaving no block at all.
1038 combo, 100% cleared
  • Score: 125 483 900
  • Time: 0:02:13

Level 3

Unlike the first 2 levels with 3 layers, this one has 4, so it took longer. About halfway through, I started going for gravity combos (causing chain reactions when blocks fall) for bonus points instead of pure destructive speed, as each one gives a bonus equal to the current combo score. From there, the score takes a sudden jump ...
1158 combo, 100% cleared
  • Score: 276 804 300
  • Time: 0:00:27

Level 4

I start this one with a fast combo score, then time runs out ... or does it?
Since the game doesn't cut me off until there's no blocks disappearing or falling, I did about 1:17 of overtime to clear the entire level again with a high combo score and a lot of gravity combos, almost doubling the score in the process!
965 combo, 100% cleared
  • Score: 569 319 300
  • Time: 0:00:00

Final stats

  • Total score: 569 319 300
  • Highest combo score: 50 804 000
  • Biggest combo: 1158
  • X count: 227 (total gravity/fuse combos)
  • Total pieces taken: 4162
  • Total drops: 927
  • Cores uncovered: 393
  • Levels passed: 3
This could be improved with a better scoring strategy, as shown by the much faster scoring at the end, but I did a few different tricks and still scored a whole lot more than anyone could ever dream to get ... for reference, my realtime best is just a little over 15 million.

Bisqwit: Accepting, because it looks impressive, it's entertaining, and we want more N64 movies. :)
(Unfortunately, I can't encode this movie because of bad mupen64 plugins and/or bad opengl settings.)

I'm not sure that this movie can be given a star--it's an excellent movie but it's almost impossible to comprehend. Can this movie be given a Gold WTF Medallion?

I'm with Walker Boh on this one

Felt like someone was playing with a bulldozer in my head. Just WTF was happening in that movie? Really? =D Cheers! Hope someone can beat it. Good for competition I guess?

Staggering... quite an amazing (if confusing) video. It would definitely have my vote.

I played this quite a bit years ago, and this is incredible. For those who have no idea what's going on: The goal is to get at least 3 of the same block together going horizontaly or vertically. When you do, they disapear and you get points. You can also destroy or shift blocks under other blocks to make them fall, and I believe you get bonus points if you destroy blocks with a dropping block. The longer you take to do this, the closer you get to the sphere, if you take too long you "bonk" into the sphere and lose a heart. If you lose all your hearts and you have to start the level again. It normally takes several seconds to find You can drop the blocks on the left side of the screen or move blocks already present to accomplish this.

This video is simply incredible. I love the fact that stage 4 continues to go on past the clock, since you can keep playing as long as a chain is breaking down. This was a really impressive run, and I can only imagine how confused people would be if they've never played the game. Hell, even if they HAVE, its a fairly difficult run to follow. Anywho, I can't help but wonder just how much faster this run would be if items were used. I mean, I know items weren't used, and there might be a TON of ways to break the puzzles down, especially if items were used. I hope to see more runs for this game. It's such a great game to play, and just mind boggling to watch.

Hmm...is it better to go for high score or high level for this game? Either way, I've played this game before, and I wanted my jaw to drop after seeing the AVI. Oy...I'm just impressed.

Definitely high score. high level is simply clearing one 'tile' of the core over and over, as one exposed tile is all you need to advance to the next level from what I understand. that would be the epitome of boring imo.

I could be completely wrong, but, it may be that the best way to get a high score is to get the x20 multiplier, pass as many levels as quickly as possible and then do the last level in one gigantic overtime combo. (This is just a wild guess but it's based on the fact that Acmim's score in level n+1 is always much larger than his score in level n. I don't know anything about how the scoring system works but I must wonder if level 5 grants even more points.)

i used to be really into tetrisphere, but i always assumed i was the only person within the planet that knew/loved the game. Its one of the few N64 games i regularly go back to. what a pleasant surprise it was to see that this game had gotten a proper running. for those who have never played the game, there's pretty much no hope of understanding >_>; its a very out of this world version of tetris, imagine tetris if it were in first person mode. The movie doesnt show it, but you move closer and closer to the sphere the longer you take to drop a piece. eventually you crash and a very intimidating looking skull indeed indicates a lost life. acmlm never stops droppin' them though. for those who have played the game... follow the white and pay attention to when the black border appears... even so some amazing speed that i couldnt follow the entire time @_@ about that glitch where you can move blocks across impassable places: could it possible be abused further by using a bot with more strength (like Stomp) or is it more practical with the average bots? Or perhaps bots with faster movements? i'm sorry, but tetrisphere is too cool, i'm like a school girl >_>;

^^^ I suggest this as a new description text!

I had this game on console too, I remember getting pretty far in Rescue and Puzzle and even scoring 400 million in Rescue (it took hours and the run still did more in 6 minutes, haha) ... but that was around 1997-1998 when it was new, I didn't play it much since then and wasn't even that good in Time Trial, at least until I decided to start this run. I recorded one just now where I scored 15 million in realtime: http://acmlm.cjb.net:2/emu/n64/mupen64/movies/tetrisphere-realtime.zip It's much easier to follow and might help understanding the tool-assisted one better (just think of it as what would happen if I could think/move 10x faster and never miss).

The score speedup was mostly from coming up with better strategies, the very fast scoring at the end could have happened on level 1 (after hitting 20x) or 2 ... I'm thinking it would go like this, with a score going over 1 billion: 1- Max out the bonus multiplier as fast as possible, mixing the 2 methods (gravity and fuse combos) instead of doing them individually 2- Clear 9 power (shining) blocks as early as possible to max out the combo points per block (10000 and 900) 3- Boost the combo score as much as possible for about half of the level (to build it up enough), by dropping blocks on vanishing combos for bonus points 4- Finish the level with a lot of gravity combos for huge bonuses (a few million each, depending on the combo score) 5- Repeat steps 2 to 4 for each level, the bonus multiplier doesn't reset 6- Try to finish level 3 in the last few seconds (getting this to work perfectly without wasting time or rushing to finish would be hard to plan) 7- Do steps 2 to 4 during overtime for level 4, like this run did at the end Sliding also tends to go faster when I'm not dropping blocks, and they can only be dropped about every 10 frames.

I think all this changes is how fast you move when only holding the directional pad, all of them can do a full 30-60 steps per second when using frame advance.

Using items would obviously clear the levels faster, but there's either no bonus or not enough to be worth it, and I can't do anything (other than moving around) until the explosion ends, so it's really a waste. As for other modes, I'd have to try VS CPU enough by myself to see how I'd go about it, but I think Puzzle can be cleared within 10 minutes of game time, depending on waiting times (combos, etc.) in some levels.

I never played Tetrisphere, and all I understood is a freaking ball exploding and rotating. Oh, and the core is white, with some brown things there. I think this movie should not get a star. For people who never played it, it just looks like an exploding ball. Of course, this movie is impreensive. If there is some "WTF Award", certainly this movie and NES Battletoads should win it. :)

Wait wait wait. You mean you're NOT supposed to clear the entire sphere each level? You're only expected to clear one tile on the surface? As if this movie wasn't bonkers enough! I've never played this game before but I could tell that something up when the timer sat at 0:00 for a minute. :) Fantastic job! Maybe more N64 games behave strangely when you provide input faster than is humanly possible? This movie was on par with Zelda 2 in terms of "What the freak am I watching?" and that's another game that doesn't handle frame-by-frame input very well. (Or it handles it very well, depending on your definition.)

i vote meh (if i could vote) because the person who converted the movie into an avi made it impossible to understand what is going on... if i new that the frame rate in this avi sucked so much i would never have downloaded it in the first place... and can very easily see why people who only watch the avi's don't know what is going on in this movie. apologies go to the encoder for my harsh words... i hope the zelda64 avi is of better visual quality. side note: i found this site again... sadly all previous videos i downloaded from here have been deleted mysteriously and it peeves me off losing over 10gb (possibly over 15gb) of video's.

It's not the encoder's fault. The movie must be encoded at the game's frame rate specification at the right speed, and no less. Blame the game. True, the encoder could have put some subtitles, but I doubt it would make it any easier to understand. Read the author's submission text.

i withdraw my earlier comments and instead apologize... i watched more closely and saw that yes i was wrong the movie is of good quality and its the game itself that is at fault for being unbearable.

Does anyone know how to convert an N64 movie into a Screensaver? It would be perfect. :P
