Anyone interested in doing a tool assisted speed run of this game. This is the most popular Soinc Advance game so I think it would be the best one make a run of. I recomend using the team sonic and tails since they are the fastest in most levels thanks to the tag action high jump and since only a team with sonic in it can get boost mode. I have a few time attack world records in this game so I could give out some strategies for a few levels if anyone is interested.

A Knuckles+Sonic team would be best for speed, and a Knuckles+Tails team would be best for the Act 3s which are more about height than speed. Chaos Angel 3 would definately be interesting to watch as well. I saw a video on Soniccenter which shows quite well how you can abuse the collision glitches with spikes on top of columns.

The knuckles and sonic team is one of the worst ones in the game. The tails and sonic team is better than it in every way. The only thing the knuckles and sonic team can do that no other teams can is the forward boost attack while in air but tails flying is much better. Knuckles can't even climb while in this team. The knuckles and tails team may seem better than sonic and tails but it is really not. You never really need to use knuckles climbing ability or gliding ablilty since any team with tails as a partner you can fly and use tag action high jump which is much faster than climbing. Since knuckles is slower than sonic and can't get boost mode the sonic and tails team is better. So far these are the only teams that I have found to be better than sonic and tails on certain levels: Tails and Sonic (Sunset Hill 1 and 2) Sonic and Cream (Cyber Track 1) Cream and Amy (Chaos Angel 3)

Oops, sorry. Haven't played it in a while, I meant Tails+Sonic.

I think they are better in the height-based Act 3s. Knuckles+Tails gives Knuckles the ability to climb up walls super-fast (hold direction towards wall and repeatedly press A) and they have the height-boost ability as well. In bosses Cream is extremely useful as the player character because of the chao attack. Cheap but it does save time, especially in the Chaos Angel boss.

In the knuckles and tails team knuckles can't climb walls any faster when partnered with tails. The only time knuckles can climb walls faster is when partnered with amy. None of this matters though because using tag action high jump is still faster than any wall climbing methond. I can't think of a single time in this game where I have had to climb a wall since the tag action high jump is always faster.

Yes he can climb fast when partnered with Tails. If you do what I said (hold direction towards wall and tap A repeatedly) he WILL climb faster than normal.

Technically knuckles isn't climbing up the wall. He is just jumping off of it and then gliding to a higher point on the wall. This method is a little faster than climbing it normally but is still nothing compared to the speed of a tag action high jump. I would like to see you try to find one level in this game (excluding bosses) that can be completed the fastest using the knuckles and tails team. Most bosses can probably be completed faster by using a team other than sonic and tails but I don't know any good strategies for beating the bosses quickly. Does anyone have any ideas of what teams would be better for the bosses. Cream and sonic would probably work well for a few of them (creams attack and sonics tag action to get to the boss quickly) but there are probably other factors to consider as well.

It's been ages since I've played this game, and alas, people such as gbagcn have surpassed me :( I do agree that this game would really be interesting to watch for a tool assisted speed run. I've actually always wanted to do a sonic advance speedrun, but I have little knowledge of how emulators work. So I'll most likely be attempting a legit run through the game during Summer for Speed Demos Archive. If I get back into sonic advance 3 though, I may try a run for this as well (or could at least offer some pointers) gbagcn has more knowledge of this game then me when it comes to time attacking it.

That was me! I sort of regret posting that video up though since it gave away why I was a whole minute ahead of second place. It was fun while it lasted though. that record has been broken however, by chaosangel73 (I think that's his name) using Amy and Cream. As far as I know, the world record for chaos angel 3 now stands at 52 seconds! I'm pretty sure the strat is posted at soniccenter (which should be up in a week hopefully).

Personally, I'd rather see a run of the first or second game. The second moreso because the boost mode would make it rather interesting.

I've actually been here a few times, but I only viewed it as a guest. I registered here recently though because I was directed to a certain topic. After I registered, I'd figure I'd check out the other forums, and sure enough, gbagcn was talking about sonic advance 3! Pretty good timing if you ask me. :O

Same here. I've actually been working on a run for the first sonic advance to put on Speed Demos Archive, but it's proving to be quite difficult. Summer's here though, so hopefully I can finish it soon :D As for Advance 2, that is impossible to speedrun without tool assistance. Seriously, I will bow down and worship anyone that can get a halfway decent runthrough the game. Alot of the leves have to have perfected jumps and airdashes. Going for individual level times alone is a *****, so a speedrun through the whole game is like...well...I dont know what word to use to describe how much pain you'd go through! I'd love to see any of the 3 advance games tool assisted though. I bet it'd be the sickest thing you've ever seen, with the airdash and all. But like I said, I have no knowledge about emulator recording. If anybody wants to attempt advance 1 or 2 that'd be great. As for which route is the fastest, I can help out with that. Not advance 3 though. I haven't played that game for like...6 months. gbagcn probably has the best knowledge of the game. Seriously, somebody make a tool-assisted run of these games! I've gotten sonic to go EXTREMLY fast. I can already see how fast he could probably go with an emulator. I think you could maybe even sub 20 seconds on neogreenhill zone 1, or 35 seconds on route99 act 1!

NintenDan if the only thing that is stopping you from making a TAS why don't you just read the FAQ on this site. It explains all that you need to know to make one and there are plenty of people here to help you as well. If you are going to make a regular speed run of a sonic advance game you make it segmented instead of playing it all in one sitting since you can get better times that way. The only advantage of a non-segmented run would be the impressiveness from knowing it was done that way but a segmented run would be much better to watch since the times for each level would be closer to the world records.

Yay, revived interest. Has anyone actually been doing anything on a SAdv3 run since the last post in here? Personally, I'd say Advance 2 or 3 would both be great to watch a speed run of - Advance 1 less so, but I WOULD love to see someone demonstrate that "Knuckles pushing against the wall" trick that many people have mentioned on GameFAQs but I never understood. O.o but that's off-topic. :P

*off-topic* I would looove if Ninten-Dan, mike89 (Paused?) and other members of the sonic community would consider do some TASes for any Sonic runs (of course, preferably for Sega).

If your saying what I think your saying... No Im not mike89, though I really do not mind be mistaken for him. My only alt is P1 Pause, and thats the name I have on Sonic Center, though I have not really played there recently at all. I would love to have the skills to do a TAS but 2d Sonics are not my really my strong point.

I forgot to put a , after I wrote mik89 so I knew you aint him :) Besides a little bit of skill, all you need is determination and patience.

Nitsuja's already ass raping sonic advance 2, and BBQPWNED the first level in Sonic Advance. I think everything will be ok... Haha, I know those times are impossible legit, but I just really really really have a strong urge to pick up Sonic Advance now and go for sub 20 In fact, I've got nothing better to do for the next two days, so I think I will!

I decided to have a look at this, and have just attempted the first level. Its not great mind, this is the first time I have ever even used a emulator, let alone made a TAS. I managed a time of 38.57 seconds using Sonic and Tails, which compares to a top time of 39.22 at TSC. Not a great improvement as you can see, so I appreciate any advice anyone had to offer. I am guessing the first problem would be a small rerecord count. That brings me on to my second problem however, and I guess there are better places ask this, but whilst Im here, how do you post WIPs?

I think Nitsuja is the wright person giving feedback as he has the best experience so I hope he will view your WIP. On frame 5700-5750, would it be faster to jump instead of walking down?

Well I chose not jump so I would have boost mode for the rest of the level. Tested it though, and it was quicker to jump. Pity it was only by 20 milisecomds, but every little counts.

I couldn't sleep last night, so I decided to TAS this game a bit, I've never played the game before and I hadn't completed the stages before I TASed them, so I wouldn't know the fastest routes through the stages. Also, I don't know how most things work, and I figured some stuff out during movie making, so I missed a couple of things in some places that I would have wanted to add, so if you know this game, don't watch. Anyway, for someone as unexperienced with this game as me, it might still be fun to watch. :) http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1176/ I think I'm gonna buy this game.
