Every once in a while a story like this comes along that renews my faith in the human race, if only for a brief moment. No, not the fact that the secretary stole a bunch of secret documents, but the fact that Pepsi didn't want them.

Even then, it can be considered just a PR trick for Pepsi :-/ PR has a monetary value as well. Which one is more profitable? Getting hold of your equal competitor's newest secret, or gaining popularity in eyes of your customers? To be honest, I doubt it will have any effect on their market share. And it's not like they could have used Coke's secret recipe, as they're not going to change the formula for Pepsi. The people that like it like it because it's different, for example, it's sweeter. Really, they had nothing to gain and everything to lose by being dishonest, but I'd rather believe they refused the information out of principle, and that PepsiCo isn't headed by a bunch of Ken Lays.

Also it could be in pepsi's best interestest to decline paying for secrets if they suspect it is a trap by Coke to try and get them to do something illegal.
g,o,p,i=1e4,a[10001];main(x){for(;p?g=g/x*p+a[p]*i+2*!o: 53^(printf("%.4d",o+g/i),p=i,o=g%i);a[p--]=g%x)x=p*2-1;}

Maybe they just didn't like the price and decided to gain something from the whole thing anyway.

That's the beauty of capitalism, though. It makes sure that people act civilly, whether they're altruists or egoists.

I was totally expecting some asinine (yet funny) Billy Madison quote when I opened this topic. Then I remembered it was "Business Ethics", not "Corporate Ethics".

It's impossible to know what Pepsi would have done in a world without consequences, but Coca Cola certainly could have sued their asses for buying their trade secrets. This wasn't an untraceable act of corporate espionage: items were physically removed from the premises. They couldn't possibly have gone along with this scam.
