IF we are trying to appeal to newcomers, then the newcomers won't know what the stars mean. I say we replace it with some sort of 16 x 16 medal or trophy, signifying that it is a winnar

It is not an award. It is a status. It is oriented towards the audience, not towards the player. Also, as for visibility, I don't think it needs to be changed in any way. The star is no way invisible on the page. As for understandings its meaning, there already is an explanation at the beginning of the movie listing. As for newcomers finding them, there is already a "list all recommended movies" option on the front page.

When I was new, I figured out the star pretty easily. I'm still not sure I know what's up with the 3-up moons, though.

Just remember this, my friend, when you look up in the sky, you can see the stars and still not see the light.

If I remember correctly, the 3-up moons are "highly recommended" movies as they appear in the recently added list, but not enough to be a star.

The non-star special icon (currently a moon) stands for "notable publication".

Maybe every non-obsoleted run that has had a star in the past should get a moon icon. It seems odd that some went from a star to nothing, while others that didn't get a star in the first place keep a moon.

Obsoleted movies don't lose their stars. Though it has no meaning after it's obsoleted, and it's not displayed in movie changelog.

I meant movies that have had their star manually removed from them to give to another movie, not obsoleted movies. That's why I said "non-obsoleted".

I don't think the moons are displayed on the main movie listing pages, just on the recently added list.

They are displayed at NewMovies, which (despite the name) lists all movies ever published here.

Ahahahahahaha. God, I'm so glad I didn't read this in class, I actually burst out laughing when I saw that. Personally, I just think we should have another movies page for "sort by rating", and/or give the top 3 movies some sort of little graphic for "Top rated".
