Basically, this is an attempt for fastest time. I chose not to use the invincibility glitch as this movie also demonstrates skill. I use some collision abuse and also take damage to save time. I used the gens_movie_9g to make this movie. This game is based on the disney movie Toy Story and it tells the story of Woody coming to terms with his jelousy of Buzz Lightyear. This movie was not too difficult to make, it required basic platform skills. However certain levels such as 'Pizza Planet' are nightmarish for all speedrunners as it requires a lot of stallage.

Its pretty amazing that you did a quite optimized run with merely 609 rerecords! I honestly enjoyed it, clear yes vote. By the way, are you absolutely sure the driving stage was 100% optimal?

Yes, the first driving stage was an odd one. Haha. Strangely the traction on the road seemed to get better as the level went on, and even with 6% speed and frame advance the early corners were overly tight. However, hitting the walls only lost real time if hit directly on a face. If you drove up the sides like i had to do it didn't make much difference.

Would the NO voter care to discuss it?

I'm thinking you should redo. It's a good game for this I think, but you were visibly not optimized. I stopped after the fight with Buzz where you had to bounce the tire around. You really could have had that tire on him much sooner. And in the running Rex stage, you need to play for entertainment. Just staying at the right edge of the screen is not what we want to see. Remember, you're not supposed to make a video walkthrough, you're supposed to make a piece of entertainment. It's hard to do sometimes and often you don't even realize that you're not doing it, I know myself, hehe... But yeah. Some of it was definitely good, and you're on the right track. The stage where you had to keep up with Buzz was good, but I think using hooks more often instead of bouncing on a couple rubber balls would have been faster, and thus better. So, yeah, good points bad points.

As far as the early levels go (which is all that you saw!) they were optimized and in my opinion the first level is 100% optimal. In my shame i have to admit that the fourth tyre on Buzz could have been a little faster looking back but the first three were perfect. I suppose i could have played rex in the centre of the screen in the interest of entertainment if preempting enemies isnt everyones thing haha. When Woody uses his pullstring there is massive (in TAS terms of course) stallage and so i tried to limit it, thus meant using the balls instead of hooks.

The game is beautiful and more varied that any other Genesis game I've seen (though I'm no expert), but your tas didn't seem polished. The tire-bouncing fight may not be optimal, damage seemed random (or even lazy), star collection wasn't consistent and necessary waits didn't even try to be entertaining. The first racing section is also improvable. By watching memory to try to keep my speed up, I got ~2.5s ahead of you by the time this movie (state) stops. That's just a quick demo, and I'm pretty sure it could be improved by slowing down for certain corners too. I'm voting no, but don't get discouraged. This game will make a great tas. It just needs more effort.

OK. I'm going to pull this game from submissions and ill polish it up real nice. I also think that my notes were a bit vague and misleading. Star Collection was never an ambition of mine in this TAS. Im looking at various things at the moment, but since this is THE game of my childhood i hope to get up a perfect TAS shortly.

Just out of curiosity, why did you choose the Genesis version over the SNES version? From what I can remember of the game, it's pretty much identical to this one. I only complain because I don't like the sound the Genesis produces. It's entirely up to you which one you use.

Your run in the 2nd level for putting the toys away was not optimal so I stopped watching; you should actually check out what was done by the original poster in the Toy Story topic where you posted

I chose the Genesis version because that's the console i played it on as a little boy. Also, i think the Gens_movie_9g is a very reliable emulator. Especially when recording (it has a little red dot in the bottom right!!). As far as the 2nd level goes it did look good to me. The logic was good, i only ever back tracked once, however i think it got a bit odd at the end watching back. Also, ybbnun, that link doesn't work....

I watched the run in full and didn't really in enjoy it and the simple reason is inconsistency. One moment you're collecting stars the next you're avoiding them all together, then you take damage and then you don't when it wuld have been quicker, I thought you would always finish with one damage counter at the end of every stage. The second buzz fight didn't look anywhere near optimal, since you only tried to avoid him and not manipulate him to appear near the tyre so that you he would imeadiatley tangled again. The autoscroller levels weren't much fun too watch since you just huged the right side of the screen right the way through. I would of expected to see you avoid certain objects twice in a row and loads of near misses. I'd say redo this with the invincibilty trick and then without it.

I think i will. I reckon, since my recent attempt, i know the game better. I should be able to churn out an invincibility glitch speedrun rather quickly.
