@Nach: well, you might be right on that, but that doesn’t change anything as I said in the phrase following the one you cited
Well guess what, the SNES Mouse was official, and the mouse movements inputs way more bits than the standard pad does.
that is the question I have been making the whole time… why do you think I’m against the publication of this movie? all I wanted was clarification, if the mouse allows for the run to be playable on real hardware, that’s ok with me
I said a page ago this is possible on real hardware.
your definition of “possible” seemed to be different to mine, and now you’re actually making me wonder whether I understood right what you meant about the mouse…

How do you even define official controller?
an official controller is something Nintendo endorsed, there should be some kind of Nintendo seal of approval on said controller’s box, I’d imagine?
Which almost all the third party controllers are.
then I guess they are fine?

What about that for many people back in the day, they never used an "official" controller?
how is that relevant?
If the standard way to play the game is with a non first party controller, then you can't fault the TASer for doing the same.
I highly doubt that most people would use unofficial hardware as the standard way to play, and even then what’s official has more relevance than what people use

Use the controller of your choice.
I agree with ais523, if the controller isn’t an official one then it’s as relevant as using a famiclone to do TASes but if there’s an official controller that allows for the run to be played on real hardware, that’s cool; I didn’t understand which was the case from your post

The 4 extra bits used for each controller bus in this run are not present on an actual controller, but they are present inside it. Input for them is polled each frame and they are by default read as "released". You can send the "pressed" signal for them. But they ARE a part of SNES input. Let's say you need to stick a needle somewhere to make them pressed. I don't see any problem here, it's pretty similar to pressing the opposite directions at once or pressing a button at 30Hz. On a real hardware we'd use a direct access to these bits and send all the necessary input via the SNESbot device, since the real controller is not used.
you’re missing the point that a TAS doesn’t amount to shit if it’s not actually possible for real pressing left+right can still be done on a real controller

@MrGrunz: that’s a good point, does anyone know if it would work? basically pressing left then right so fast that the game registers them at the same time

why did this get accepted so quickly? shouldn’t we discuss whether it’s a legitimate way of beating the game? accepting a run that uses inputs impossible to replicate on real hardware sounds ridiculous to me…

1. Pressing Up+Down or Left+Right on controllers that don't normally allow it 2. Pressing buttons that don't exist on normal controllers but that are still read through the controller port
1. I think this is possible on very worn out D-pads, so you don’t have to go as far as actually modding a controller to make this possible… 2. I don’t really understand this, but this seems retarded to me, does it basically mean that you can’t do it on console using a/multiple controller(s)? I don’t see how that could be accepted, SDA would’ve been right in calling us cheaters if we start doing things that aren’t possible on real hardware

what do you mean? we already know that the Wii Wheel is capable of full diagonal input in Mario Kart Wii, but the GCN controller can’t
It could restrict the input when using a gc controller, but not with the wheel?
so you think that’s what’s happening? what should a TASer do then?

Huh? It goes past the normal circle range just fine. I know there's at least one game that even lets you move significantly faster than is normally possible because of this (like that kayak game swordless tased, for example).
an MKW TASer has told me that the full diagonal input gets registered by the game as just an input within the circle… could it be that this was an old problem and he hasn’t updated his input plug-in? or maybe it’s a problem only with Mario Kart Wii? actually the guy I’m talking about is MKDasher, maybe you know him edit: his words: “I have just made a short test with TAS input and I set it on full diagonal, and it registered at 4 / 5 (full diagonal should be 7/7 )”

about input plug-in: I’ve heard from Mario Kart Wii TASers that the input plug-in doesn’t give the full range of directions (it’s contained within the circle of the analogue stick, instead of the more wider square box); why is this? it’s known for a fact that Wii Wheel is capable of the full range of directions, and that the GCN Controller is limited to the circle, but shouldn’t the plug-in simulate the Wheel’s input?

this TAS doesn’t seem to take into consideration acceleration at all… unless there is no acceleration (it looks like there is), then this seems very sub-optimal to me but it doesn’t even matter because if sound can’t be encoded then the run can’t be published also I wasn’t very much entertained and the camera shakes give nausea

I also discovered (because I made a hex editing error) that this game can accept input on subframes. It doesn't seem to affect how the file syncs, so far, but it does allow all inputs to be done 1 frame sooner (or at least Dolphin is displaying it being done 1 frame sooner).
how does that even work? Dolphin doesn’t allow for sub-frame inputs, does it?

So there's room for a separate category here, if well done.
I disagree, the runs would be very similar, but that’s just my opinion some in-level records do indeed take damage to “sequence break” and save time, but it doesn’t happen often

are you asking if it’s possible to remove input HUD? View → HUD → Input

I think this or something similar has happened to all of us, sadly you can’t do anything about it but it’ll teach you to be more cautious in the future

It's also interesting that the submission module supports infinity as a time.
I assume Adelikat coded that on the fly the best part of this TAS is its stream’s chat, lol

Hammer Bros have different patterns, so sometimes Adelikat kills one on the bottom and sometimes he doesn't.
I also noticed bullet bills changing pattern, now btw, what the hell is Crown+blue brick lives?
