I enjoyed this movie much more than I had expected. Watching it in full screen was a pleasant experience. It's easy to follow what's happening, which gives positive experiences for the viewer. The run is intelligent and surprising too. 42 minutes is not that long, you need to give yourself some time to relax.

Maybe a new thread should be created for that purpose? Here's some Finnish Hardcore Punk: http://www.mikseri.net/artists/?id=46898

(By the way, there's still no need to hurry publishing it.)

It looks boring only because you walked. It's faster to jump. In more detail, to move right as fast as possible: jump, turn left for one frame, hold right. Normally jumping is slower than walking, but if you turn in the air, speed increases (which is completely unintuitive and crazy). Edit: Oh, even more strange is that it does not seem to work in every level. I have no idea what makes the difference between the levels. Edit: And actually, you don't need to turn in the air, it's enough to jump still for one frame, then press left/right.

This is what Gods level 1 looks in the memory when each memory value is replaced with some color. Red is impassable wall, green is ladder, the colorful dots are all kinds of triggers, loading zones, doors, switches, items etc. I wish I had a tool to view this part of the memory in real time while playbacking/recording a movie. That way I might get a better understanding of what's happening offscreen. The point is to (hopefully) get at least some new information that's not available while playing the game normally. This method will not work with all games, because the data is not always arranged that nicely.

The problem is that you'd need to backtrack half the level, which is slower than taking the ordinary route.

I forgot to update the WIP last time, so here's the first 2 levels done: http://www.freewebs.com/aqfaq/lktas.zip By the way, an obvious shortcut at level 5 has been missed in all movies so far. It will save ~15 seconds.

I could possibly think of one or two: a pacifist nightmare MAP02, because it has never been done unassisted, and nomonsters MAP07, where you normally need to kill everyone to lower a platform.
Oh, true. Pacifist or Tyson MAP30 would be awesome too. Edit: Or pacifist full game run.

Only full runs, no single levels (unless it demonstrates something very cool that cannot be done during a normal full run).
Yeah, actually I can't think of any tricks that can be done in a single level run, but not in a full run.

Heh, I accidentally watched this one instead of the real submission. It was probably the best incomplete TAS I've ever seen. Voting "no", yeah!

Eh, well, actually... The huge shortcut did not work, because the hyenas that need to be killed in order to progress in the level did not appear. It seems that the enemies in the upper part of the level are loaded after Simba reaches a certain spot and the bird-trick skips that spot. I've done the first two levels gaining 6 seconds 19 frames. I'm not actively recording this at the moment.

The main difference is that I climb stairs faster by pressing left-right-left-right-left-right...

I wanted to test recording with VBA and picked this game. Here's the first mission done fast: http://www.freewebs.com/aqfaq/rebelstartas.zip The main characteristics of the movie would be extensive luck manipulation and super fast cursor/menu handling. There are 25 missions and I believe some of them might look very interesting done perfectly. I searched for cheats to make unseen enemies visible. This helps planning the missions, but it's not possible to record with these codes on.

Thanks. I believe there's less room for improvement later in the game. Edit: I was so wrong again. This route saves more than 30 seconds: It's one of the hardest tricks I've ever recorded, although it's a classic timesaver, using enemy as a platform.

I found a better route for level 1. I managed to make an almost impossible jump to grab a ledge. It does not look that hard, but it requires amazing precision. http://www.freewebs.com/aqfaq/LKTAS.zip Level 1 is now exactly 3 seconds faster than Dan's movie. 1 frame was improved in the title screen, 179 frames in the level.

Thanks for your math Nitrodon. (I seem to suck at it.) Yeah, the possible input for each step would be: a) L-idle b) R-idle c) idle I'd be honored to be beaten by a bot. :)

Oops, I miscalculated something... It's ~20 000 for the additional 9 frames, but there is actually a total of 18 frames available. I missed the fact that the 9 frames I used for manipulation in my movie have a meaning too. It's more than 380 000 000 combinations, but it comes down to ~150 000 000 for various reasons. For example, pressing left/right costs 2 frames. Also, some of the combinations lead to the password screen which is a dead end.

I improved the movie by 5 frames and now the sceptre can't be manipulated any faster to the location {11, 4}. I tested all meaningful button sequences for it. Now the only possible improvement is to get {11, 5} within 9 extra frames of manipulation. There's almost 20 000 combinations to test, even though the only meaningful input values for each frame are left/right/idle. I can't do that, so this is my final movie. I hope someone improves it somehow someday. :) It's essentially the same movie, so I'd better not re-submit it. I guess Bisqwit is the only one who can replace the submission file? Please replace it with this: http://www.freewebs.com/aqfaq/kbtas.zip Here's a screenshot for it, if it gets published: or
