Oh yes that is resolved too. I don't know what I did to fix it however. Unless somehow renaming the ROM is making BizHawk 'use' a different file? Apologies everyone here's a few error codes you can keep in mind here. USR=ID10T PEBCAK PICNIC and so on! Thanks all for your patience and tips!

I think I may have found something out about this game. I'll have to look into it more to be sure however. In this game you can play as a number of characters and you basically shoot your way through a number of levels. Along the way you can pick up power up boxes that make your gun more effective. I have noticed that the ammo counter doesn't actually decrease until you fire your weapon AFTER picking up your first power up box. Another reason thats making me think this is that BizHawk says that there 0 cheats and 0 are active. This little video I just recorded should make it clearer. I just never noticed this before in my casual playthroughs. And this being a TAS run and that particular room I enter in the video below is unnecessary for completion I just skip it in TAS. It might not be a bug! Its a feature I'm thinking! Link to video Also notice how the weapon is behaving after the power up box? I'm thinking ammo is just a resource to power upgraded weapons... EDIT: The point of this post is to suggest that the problem wasnt BizHawk related. it was PEBCAK. EDIT 2: Just found my box containing all my oldest PS1 games (hey shhh I have a collection here!) and of course the game I am running is there and in the manual it says: " AMMUNITION Each crate contains much needed ammunition. Pick these up to keep your weapon fully locked and loaded. if you run out of ammunition your weapon will automatically switch to low power making it less effective against the enemy. "

While I was testing things for the game I am about to make my first serious attempt at TASing I entered a couple cheats. The cheats are persisting even after clearing out the cheats screen. I know I must be missing something very obvious here but.... Infinite ammo and infinite lives does kinda ruin the spirit of a TAS :P

I've spent some time searching around but haven't found anything RE: difficulty levels. I have found playing the game however that enemies seem to be bullet sponges and I THINK that enemy numbers don't change. Guess one way to find out is to play through a level. Kill everything and see if the body count displayed at the end of the level is different.

I am about to start my first actual attempt at creating a TAS, before I get started I'd like to ask a couple pointers about the conventions when it comes TASes in general. The game I am about to TAS is Loaded from the PS1. There are a number of options in the (wouldn't you know it?) Options menu. Difficulty ranges in 5 steps from Players Are Fairies to Players are Loaded. You can start the game with anywhere between 1 and 5 lives. You can also start the game with anywhere between 1 and 5 continues. This effectively means for this game you can have just about anywhere between 2 and 25 lives for the whole game. Since TASes are supposed to show supernatural inhuman skill my gut tells me I should run with the hardest difficulty with minimum lives and minimum continues. What's the general consensus about this sort of thing?

What do you know it actually DOES work like that. Cheers Samsara! I'm about to get started! I'm also going to be asking a question in newbie corner in a second. ill update with a link here when I do. EDIT: Newbie Corner question: http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=449265#449265

Balimaar casts Raise Dead. Its effective! I'd love to TAS this but despite having access to 3 different BIOS for the PS1 BizHawk just gives me a black screen. Unless of course I am doing something wrong - more than likely! What BIOS do you guys use for PS1 games? NOTE: I am not asking for download links. I am merely asking which one people use.

I just tried this myself and got the same error. Unfortunately there's nothing you can do, it's just something unimplemented in the emulator. Trust me, a lot of games don't run on JPC-rr. :( If you want a similar game to TAS I'm fairly sure Raptor: Call of the Shadows works fine, albeit slowly.
Awwww what? Colour me devastated :( I remembered playing Baryon as a kid and wanted that to be my first TAS. Guess I'll play the waiting game... in the meantime I had better find something else.

To suggest other shmups, there's also Tyrian, Major Stryker, Star Goose and Zone 66.
I vaguely remember Major Stryker (that was another game I only ever had the shareware version of iirc). It was a game like this Baryon but along the way you had the option of saving friendly pilots or something of that sort if I remember right. Or am I thinking of something else?

For those unaware Baryon is this game: (fast forward to about 1:50 to see the game play) Link to video On to topic! Setting up this emulator is doing my head in. I am absolutely 500% confused (I think maybe I was made a little TOO comfortable with being able to just drag and drop a game into FCEUX and having it just work :D ) I have run into a brick wall and have no idea how to carry on. This is what I have so far: Disk Library folder PC Settings Window of JPC The emulator runs through the boot sequence (after I do the suggested skips as described in the instructions) and then it stops - awaiting my input. I have tried running the game via its GO.COM file through the A drive which of course doesn't work (as you'd expect - no point trying to run the game which is in a different drive - at least as far as the software is concerned). So I change to the C drive and try the GO.COM command and this is what I get: I have no idea what to do next... Its certainly not booting up as smoothly as Ilari's attempt at SkyRoads here: https://archive.org/details/PcSkyroadsByIlariIn1626.867 Looking forward to getting this fixed! This game will teach me a lot about TASing in a more advanced way - SMB has taught me the basics but this game will teach me a lot about manipulating things to my advantage.

I'll be sticking for now to games that have a few TASes floating around and as I grow in knowledge and practice I'll start to dig around for games that are 'rare' (if that makes any sense). I've also sorta completed my first level in Mario as well now - but noticing I am a couple hundred frames behind. I'm having a lot of trouble trying to work the flagpole glitch *hangs head in shame* EDIT (more like a PS but hey): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4vugzCKrnjA I remember again the version I had was a shareware version that only had this first level in it. Those explosions and those rockin tunes really thrilled young me. I'm not entirely sure whether this would be a good TAS. That being said... the game could probably teach me a lot about manipulating the game to give me the outcome I want. I think it would be an interesting exercise at least. EDIT2: I should also mention the final clincher as to how I chose to come here. Actually reading through the Gruefoods was that reason. Not because I enjoy dealing with assholes but more that I liked the way the mods and so on handle people who disagree or are just being silly. I feel sorry for Samsara and Moth!

Yes I was only going to use Mario as a bit of practice to get some practice into working with TAS tools. It was never going to be a super serious attempt. I will say however that I have never before spent so much time on the first 10 seconds of a video game before haha! I'm always finding little things to do to improve on what I have already done. I will be looking into these wishlists. Although one game that springs to mind (I played the death out of the shareware version YEARS ago) Jazz Jackrabbit (if I am remembering the name correctly that is).

Hmmm that is interesting. I have not given a single thought towards what I might do beyond Mario. In that respect I am quite stuck. Well I have my starting point at least! In the meantime I will stew on the "What Next?" question. Thank you for the welcomes!

Firstly I'll explain my name! The first game I ever played online sort of seriously was Medal of Honor:Allied Assault. Now in that community (and to be quite frank what seems to be the case in many FPS communities), the only weapon people thought took any sort of skill was the sniper rifle. The silly thing was that most of the sniper duels consisted of 2 people bunny hopping so close to each other that they could kiss each other... but they would keep missing until one of them got lucky. When I started playing, I was learning the maps and in that process I was using the SMGs. I noticed that people kept calling me a bass fish. That was quite random I thought.... Until that one glorious day (well... 2 days after it started lol) I decided to call someone a bastard. I finally realised that the chat filter on the server was changing bastard to bass fish. So in order to save everyone some time, I called myself Balimaar the Bass Fish (or if you prefer, Balimaar the Bastard). So my TAS Future? I've watched various TAS runs (mostly the runs shown on the Games Done Quick streams) and am eager to get started on one of my own (that 2 second completion of one of the Mario games was hilarious!) I come in with absolutely 0 experience in this sort of thing. But solving games like they were puzzles interests me a great deal. I will be starting with Super Mario Bros. from the NES. I'll be interested to see how it turns out in the end! So hello again friends! Chat to you all soon!
