SHA1 is a hashing algorithm used to compare files to see if they're the same. The SHA1 hash of most ROMs is included in movie files so you can verify that you have the same ROM the author did when they made their movie. If your SHA1 doesn't match the movie file, whether or not it syncs is a crapshoot.

Random question to noahkiq: How exactly do you work on a TAS like this? When I watched this at AGDQ, I was reminded quite a bit of how the multi-entity puzzles in Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack In Time worked.

Next question. In the Tails encode, the camera snapping between Tails and Sonic when they approach each other or split up is very jarring. Is there anything that can be done about that?

I think a split-screen encode with the camhack and Tails-POV side by side would be amazing if you can swing that.

That was plenty entertaining for me. As far as the chances of the submission being accepted, as long as it's well-optimized, it'll be fine. The Genesis and SNES versions are decidedly NOT the same game.

Based on where it breaks it seems to be a sound issue. I'm using stock Ubuntu 18.04 and the GOG.com version of FTL: Advanced Edition.

I've been playing FTL casually for a month or two now, and I'm fascinated by the idea of TASing it because of the sheer amount of RNG available for manipulation. Sector maps, store contents, enemy and player accuracy, rewards for quests and battles...I'm working on getting Ubuntu set up on my backup machine to give it a look via libTAS. According to a good friend who turned me onto the game, the optimal ship for a speedrun is the Stealth Cruiser, Layout B, and then add a Weapon Pre-Igniter as soon as possible. I do feel, however, that a run which uses the Kestrel Cruiser, Layout A (which is the first ship/layout available) would be worth watching too, especially since the Stealth B run would require a setup save.

[3019] SNES Super Mario World "warps" by BrunoVisnadi, Amaraticando in 09:57.10 is slower than the current RTA record for 11-exit by about 12 seconds. The RTA run glitches a cloud into the item box and uses it to glitch out Bowser's AI, but TASVideos rules prohibit that because the glitch can also lead to ACE, and if you can do ACE with a glitch then the only acceptable movies using it are demos and game-end-glitch.

If memory serves, the rules on ACE state that "if a glitch can be used for ACE, the only movies we will accept that use it are game-end-glitch and exhibitions." EDIT: The 11-exit RTA world record (which uses the cloud) is actually about 12 seconds faster than our currently published 11-exit run because getting the cloud would disqualify a run from obsoleting it.

Not sure if this counts, but... In SMW low-exit-count, we don't allow glitching a cloud into the item box to later glitch out Bowser's AI because the glitch used can also be used to game-end-glitch the run and why wouldn't you just do that instead?

Zareon did that 10 years ago and managed to pacifist the whole game. I don't remember what he did with Neifirst, but I remember the Army Eye battle involved characters throwing Moon Dews (possibly just regular healing items?) at each other, and he somehow marked Dark Force and Mother Brain as beaten by running away from them.

With regard to stats in a marathon run, what if such a run set was a high-completion-rate goal, like "maximum points?" Would that result in enough work being done to boost stats to acceptable levels?

Little touches like "99 lives" in this game, and "average score of 100k per world" in SMB1 and SMB2J, really make me smile. But even putting that aside, this was spectacular. Yes vote for sure.
