Is it possible to hack a game so the demo input changes? That could make for very interesting demo movies. A hack with a built-in TAS!
Certainly. For Super Mario Bros ― how interesting movie do you think you could build, given the following limitations?: * The demo program is 75 bytes long, where the input is 43 bytes long (RLE-coded). * If the demo program is not changed, the maximum length of the movie performance is 5355 frames, where the input (buttons being held) may change 19 times. For reference, a jump changes input twice (A press, A release). If you are up for the job, the ROM locations to hack are the following: $8340 = input table; $8354 = input length table; $836B = input callback program entry; $838A = input callback program end.

Or, * for editors, click Edit, click Back to the movie entry * mouseover the game name, enter the ID into URL (if it says #552, enter 552M.html) Admittably, neither is a really good option.

Ok, moved the posts into right thread. Also, merged a couple of Zelda-related topics.

Is it a playback of a video file, or is it loading a RAM state and keypresses?
Basically the entire game engine is run as if the game was played, except that there are some memory flags present that indicate whether it is actual game or a demo; the demo setting disables interactive input, often also the music and SFX, and points to some kind of buffer to instructions for the engine to process. The instructions may include keypad input in some compressed form, or actions for the actors to perform. In Super Mario Bros I think it is keypad input, because I have seen it desync. The demo may also be prepended with a short savestate-like structure that tells the engine which scene to load. In SMB, it does not exist. When it exists, in the simplest case, it is just the stage number. I would imagine that to be the case in Castlevania, for example. More complex settings may include positions of each actor.

To my untrained eyes things werent as offensive as everyone made it seem, but I kinda agree that the gameplay resembled high-quality human play as opposed to a TAS.
To me, some sloppiness in this movie were glaringly obvious. Such as standing for a second doing nothing except changing camera angles, slow reactions. I'm not expert at OoT but I do have experience on TASes :P An example I can remember right away is a fence near the beginning. He jumps over one or two successfully, but then he climbs across one and switches the camera angle, and Link is just standing there for a moment doing nothing. I compared with the published movie, and it really is worse.

and you didnt tell me _what_ to put in the topic title... lol hope this works
Much better. Generally, the topic title is supposed to briefly indicate the topic of the discussion started in the first post. For example, in a discussion that talks about cats' mad hours, the topic could be for example, "cats' mad hours". Or in a discussion that seeks to resolve a problem relating to frobnicator v4.3 randomly crashing when the screensaver starts, the topic title could be "frobnicator v4.3 crashes randomly when screensaver starts". A good topic title consists of less than ten words, most of which are relevant to the topic, and identifies the discussion topic uniquely, in a manner that it can later be found, if one needs to, with a quick search without having to wade through every thread.

GB (gigabyte) is an unit of capacity. I wrote "faster", not "more". You need an unit of speed, such as Hertz. (And it must the memory speed, not the processor speed, though processor speed helps too.) Also, you still have not fixed the topic title like I asked.

whats the point of making a post if the topic title says it all? the "^title^" stuff is like... lmfao annoying
I addressed that question in detail in this post. The purpose of the thread title is not to deprive people from information, hoping that curiosity wins. Smart people will ignore that kind of tricks, leaving only the stupid and the bored. The purpose is to provide information, so that 1) those who are interested of that particular topic, can determine whether they are interested of the contents of the actual post or not, when they're browsing a list of dozens of topics and 2) those who are searching for information can find it.

It's a rather time consuming game for a storybook, but interesting regardless. I don't know how interesting it would be a for a TAS though. All the suspense would be gone. What's the point of the TAS? If you want to show how ridiculously fast you can complete it, then why play the english version? It's a hack; it doesn't tell how fast you can complete the original game. If you want to showcase the dialog and story, then a TAS is not really the right way... Or is it?

You need faster RAM. What is MMO anyway? If you are producing a TAS, you don't need to care about computer / program speed; the end result is the same regardless of the speed it was created with. The same applies for creating AVIs when you use the emulators' built in functions. Also, your choice of thread title is bad. Do not start a sentence in topic and end in the post; one should be able to discern the post topic by reading only the topic title in the topic list. Please edit your post to comply.

If this movie is accepted, I can guess someone will pull forth the Super Mario Bros 2 Princess-only argument again. That submission was rejected, because although it was faster than the currently published run, it was of less impressive construction. Politics, politics. Ignoring politics, I think I can agree with adelikat's point in this particular case.

1) Yes; it is not automatical. It needs someone's attention to manually update the rank. However, due to the anticipated rank system overhaul that hasn't been done anymore. Regardless, having your rank changed does not affect your ability vote. It's just a text label. 2) An admistrator of the board can change account names without separating associated data. Send him a private message requesting the change.

The definition hasn't changed. You misunderstand. The "recommendation" is not a tour or an introduction to TAS. It is a selection of movies that most likely will make the watcher want to see more. Such a staple movie list would be better served as links accompanying such an explicit list of staples.

The "makes no sense"ness is quite entertaining in this movie in my opinion. You are pedaling happily a road, until suddenly, you turn around, and take travel to some random rural city where you encounter a wild Meowth, with whom you keep a lengthy growling party. Seriously, what's with that? After a dozen rounds of mutual growling back and forth, you run from the encounter, without ever dealing damage -- and then you take your bicycle and pedal back to from whence you came. And suddenly, a Mew appears in the middle of a road. :o Later, a Tentacool appears in the middle of a road...

Okay, in the past the Workbench forum was used to discuss submissions that were rejected, implying that they need more work. Later, all submissions were first introduced at the Workbench, as it is now. However, thanks to our very active judges, the Workbench is nearing empty now, and this thread appears strikingly there. So I'll add this one post in this locked thread just noting that the content above is obsolete and has no meaning :) The purpose of Workbench is to evaluate submissions.

Asking questions in Internet -- first rule: Do not ask for people. Do ask for answers. The topic (thread title) is what attracts or detracts readers. If it contains something they're knowledgeable about, they will happily read further and perhaps answer. If it doesn't, they won't check the actual post unless they have lots of extra time and they're bored. As knowing what "this" means (in "who can answer this") requires reading the actual post, chances are they will ignore it. Asking for people means that if the people matching your query are not interested in answering $UNSPECIFIED_QUESTION (when the thread title does not summarize the question!), they will ignore you without ever knowing what it is you had on your mind, and without you ever benefiting from their knowledge. A badly written thread title is also disservice for your fellow users, who would otherwise use the search to find threads matching their problem. Nobody could ever guess that to find a thread that talks about 7zip problems, they should search for "any programmer who can answer this", rather than "7z files".

https://files.tasvideos.org/bisqwit/rockman-wily4-nonroute3.avi Here's how I crashed Rockman... Albeit not very fast as it's near the game's end. I think it's faster to do by escaping some robot master battle room and forcing the boss to fall out from the screen. Cutman is especially vulnerable to this. As for your idea, not cool for submissions. [Edit: updated link]

There were two or three things I enjoyed in this movie -- mostly the "I'm history" that interrupted the gangsters' introduction sentence, and some situations where the boys are running together carrying items. After watching this movie I watched again Sleepz's movie, and it only confirmed that I still liked his movie more than this one, unfortunately.
