Cool start, but I'm afraid the original music has more variosity in its style than those remixes. Remixes like these are examples of "when all you have is a hammer, all problems look like a nail" thinking. Nice show of amateur handling of the electric guitar and drums, but far from professional.

Even though this is kind of a "me too" post, I write to indicate that I share that exact sentiment Tub posted :)

most of the time, your TAS speedruns are the only ones posted on Google Video. It's possibly the only easy way for non-experienced gamers to see the entire game, and when you skip an entire section of the game by abusing errors, they don't get to see everything.
I recognize that as a bad side. However, it is not in the focus of TASvideos currently to provide video documentation of video games. (I would want such a site to exist, though.) These three pages [1] [2] [3] outline the kind of entertainment we want to provide here at TASvideos.

It's easy to do in tool-assisted what is difficult in normal gaming. You need higher challenge for there to be any meaning to the pursuit.

To my knowledge, it does. Or to be more precise, to my knowledge, Phil's latest did ― I'm not sure about Pom's version.

Days like these, I think this article hits the spot. http://www.shirky.com/writings/group_enemy.html > The second basic pattern that Bion detailed: The identification and vilification of external enemies. This is a very common pattern. Anyone who was around the Open Source movement in the mid-Nineties could see this all the time. If you cared about Linux on the desktop, there was a big list of jobs to do. But you could always instead get a conversation going about Microsoft and Bill Gates. And people would start bleeding from their ears, they would get so mad. If you want to make it better, there's a list of things to do. It's Open Source, right? Just fix it. "No, no, Microsoft and Bill Gates grrrrr ...", the froth would start coming out. The external enemy -- nothing causes a group to galvanize like an external enemy.

Ah, I've read about it. They kind of overlooked some mathematical similarity for algorithmical solving in the previous version. Guess they didn't do the same mistake this time, so it's really up to luck this time.

Hypothetically speaking, introduce more objects in the scene in order to maximize the possible movement between checks. No, I don't know whether it would work.

The idea of separate subtitles is probably better after all.

Just wondering, is it possible to glitch into the blocks like those seen at the end of 1-1. I've tried for ages and I keep getting ejected the wrong way :(
You mean the staircase? It'd be cool, yes, but so far, nobody has been able to do it.

This forum is not expanding at an uncontrollable pace, and it's fairly well moderated. Hence there's no need to delete past threads, which often contain stuff that turns out in a search and is useful.

Just a heads-up, I have already created the initial AVI for this movie, but before making the final one, I need subtitles that I can put in it. Maza's subtitles here are a nice start, but they only go as far as the world 1 end, and they contain errors (pointed out by Quietust) that have not been fixed.

Do remember that this is not a USA-based board. I, for example, have no affection to your president whatsoever.* *) This of course does not mean that I hate him. It just means, I have nothing to do with him. 関係無い.

Apparently, if you do the minus world glitch but enter the second pipe instead of the pipe to minus world, you end up at 5-1. The immediate question is whether you can reach the 5-2 warp zone faster than the 4-2 warp zone.
1-1 1-2 4-1 4-2 8-1 8-2 8-3 8-4 is shorter than 1-1 1-2 5-1 5-2 5-3 5-4 6-1 6-2 6-3 6-4 7-1 7-2 7-3 7-4 8-1 8-2 8-3 8-4. There is no warp zone in 5-2.

Well, it's already accepted. There's nothing wrong in showing support by voting, though -- but beware of the common fallacies in reasoning so.

In my opinion, Ice Climber is really boring to watch, like Bubble Bobble, despite both being famous NES games.

I guess I should give up with the run.
By all means, if you can think of some way to make the movie interesting to watch -- for the whole of its length! -- then go ahead and make it. Like Guybrush said, it would have to be exceptional, do something unexpected, surpass and not just fulfill the game's intention.

Are you thinking about TASing this game? If you are, I'd like to note that the game isn't really suited for TASing and if you submitted a run, it would have to show something REALLY unexpected stuff and it still probably wouldn't be good enough.
Then again, we do have a Ice Climber TAS... But I agree with you.

Do note though, that proxies are also tools of people who intentionally cause trouble; they use proxies to circumvent bans thereby making them harder to keep at bay. Thus, if you find yourself unable to join #nesvideos through a proxy, a troublemaker case might be the reason. Fortunately there aren't many of those, but just in case.

How necessary is it to get the chain whip?
It is not necessary for game completion or for acquiring any next item. However, it will greatly save time in mansions (the only places where tangible improvements in time won't be countered by night/day changes), so it's deemed as being required. Also, you will need 150 hearts to acquire the morning star (which must be owned in order to acquire the fire whip in exchange later), and you also need 50 hearts in each mansion to purchase the oak stake. Collecting those hearts with just the basic whip is rather hard if you want to progress… Because only in the beginning will the monsters die from just 4 attacks or less. I think Walker Boh can give a definite reply at whether it is plausible at all, for this movie uses basically his route with technical improvements only. Also: Nice seeing you post, Walker Boh! You have been awfully away'ish lately.

I can't help but wonder though -- has anyone ever considered using death as a timesaver in this game? It seems like it could save a lot of time backtracking out of mansions. If memory serves correctly, you can even use the 'fall through floor' glitch to fall off the bottom of the screen and drown in water that isn't really there.
When Simon dies, he will just start in the last place where he stood on a non-moving platform. That means that if he jumped into a pond, he won't resume in the pond, but instead, in the place where he jumped from. Same for dying in the midst of swamps. But die in the middle of five skeletons, no problem, he'll just continue from that exact spot. Whether you use just one or all of his extra lifes, does not matter. He will not be returned to the beginning of the dungeon, or something of that sorts. If you get a password, reset the game and input the password, you will start in the first town instead, at daytime. But I don't think that's an acceptable technique ― passwords are a bit controversial.
