FCEU always generates a savestate.

Depending on how strict it is, does it allow the movie to start with an 82 instead (of course allowing for extra bits set for skipping frames and such)?)
It expects to see control event 1 or 2 (reboot or power cycle) before the first button event. And it also checks the bit in the header.
It is good that FCEU uses run length encoding. That was one of my gripes with Nesticle.
You are certainly the first person to say that...

I watched the movie, and read the submission comments afterwards. It's a clever strategy (probably - I don't know this game well), but I kept continuously asking myself, if an experienced player could duplicate this performance on a real console. I'm unsure about the answer.
It is probably possible to shave a few more seconds off from the movie.
I agree. I expect to see a 15 seconds faster movie the next time. This movie was not boring, but I expect it to be done better. Therefore, I vote 'meh'. Still, it is an ok first-timer movie.

When you start recording a movie, look carefully at the dialog that asks for the filename and such.

In December 2004 - The pages of the Nesvideos site were loaded about 220000 times, creating about 2 GB of traffic. - Hourly, most activity happens at 22 EET (average 1734 hits per hour) and least activity happens at 12 EET (average 1167 hits per hour). - Globally on my webserver, there were 1103015 hits, 7.9 GB of traffic, with average of 1482 hits per hour. - Saturdays were silent days, with 4 times less traffic than on others days at average. 606k users of MSIE 6, 360k users of Mozilla. 20k users of Opera. Many Opera users probably masquarade as MSIE users, skewing the statistics. Five most sought things on my site: "anime", "chrono trigger rom", "bisqwit", "tales of phantasia rom" and "bell". Yes, the same as in November. Domain statistics: 1 .net 33% 2 .com 22% 3 (unresolved) 9% 4 .jp 8% 5 .fi 5% 6 .se 4% 7 .ca 3% 8 .edu 3% 9 .fr 2% 10 .nl 2% (other (more than 40 of them)) 9% For the year 2004, the total HTTP traffic on my web server amounted to 74 GB, with 8809489 hits. In year 2004, everyone gained 1 year more of age! How surprising is that.

The problem I see in widening the offering of available movies is that the number of seeders doesn't grow at the same speed, yet the seeders' number of seeded movies stays approximately the same. Which means, every time we add a new movie (not obsoleting some of the olders), the chances of a random download being seeded just gets a bit worse. And also, listing more movies [of the same game / of different games] clutters the list and makes the really impressive movies harder to find.

I don't usually post ROM links, but here's one: http://bisqwit.iki.fi/kala/temporal-flux-teaser.zip (I posted the ROM because the patch is the size of the ROM.) It is a hacked version of Chrono Trigger -- namely, a teaser trailer used to advertise Temporal Flux prior to its release. Awesome.

I agree I can't remember everything what's going on in FF5, and even my basic Japanese understanding doesn't help. But I don't think I can allow stretching from the restriction.

The main reason why I don't allow translation patches is because they are subject to change. They also contain changes which ... change the game, making it not the official. I do allow official translations, such as the English version of Chrono Trigger or FF-III USA. However, these RPG games are stories - I highly recommend people to play them before watching the movie. Watching the movie is dull entertainment compared to playing the game oneself. The target audience of those movies are those who have played the games themselves. And when you have, the texts are no longer important to be understood, because you can remember what was it all about anyway. However, it's the movie maker's choice, if the versions in question are all official.

Since the movie is aimed for those who already know the game (it would be a big spoiler for others, who might want to enjoy the game themselves), it shouldn't matter that the texts are in Japanese. I also wrote previously these:
Bisqwit wrote:
- the texts go so fast that understanding is not the biggest problem - the Japanese font renderer might be a little faster, because it has less work to do (always 12 pixels wide) - to find and demonstrate which game features were different in USA version - to make something fun to watch for Japanese people :)

I tested the ROM with "-pal 1" option of fceu, and I couldn't see a difference between its timing and the timing of the previous AVI. I think the ROM automatically adjusts and thus works properly even if played in NTSC.

Episode 1 has been fansubbed and can be download for example here: http://www.torrentreactor.net/download.php?id=5006753 (Note that the fansubbers are not affiliated with Namco or the makers of the anime.) Apparently, a non-fansubbed AVI of the episode can be downloaded here: http://www.downloadanime.org/torrents/%5BRaw-Anime%5D%20Tales%20of%20Phantasia%20OVA%201.torrent (Same disclaimer as above.)

The second episode will be released at January 26th. Naturally it can't be fansubbed before it's available. The third episode will be released in March, and the fourth has not a set date yet. Reference: http://www.ova-top.com/ (Released: It's not aired, but sold on DVD and VHS.)

I'd like to go at it, but there are a few problems: 1. I don't have infinite free time 2. I'd hate it if after publishing the movie, Morimoto points out that level <x> is 2 seconds slower than in his movie, for whatever reason I didn't know beforehand 3. Publishing a not-perfect movie creates a drop in the spirit for consequent improvements The tricks Finalfighter has been mapping being difficult to perform comes as a distant 4.

Sounds incredible. Is it possible I miscalculated? I verified with FCEU PAL option that the ROM indeed plays too fast in Famtasia. I adjusted it by multiplying the time by 1.2 (ratio 60/50). How is the TG time calculated btw? If it skips the intro sequence...

I don't know the full implications (whether the SDD1 emulator or the graphics pack simulates the correct amount of lag within SNES), but I feel like the SDD1-way is the correct way to go - no graphics packs. Star Ocean is indeed an interesting challenge because of the choice of characters. The choice affects the story, and optimizing that in length (of story and battles) may be challenging. And of course, the game is cool!
