The help menu says "Ver5.1", but I am using "fam51fb.zip" ("final beta").

I'm using Famtasia 5.11 or so exactly because I haven't found a 6-version that supports movie rerecording. If you're getting a mapper error, you're either having a wrong ROM or then just a wrong version of Famtasia. Note that your Solstice ROM must be of European version if you want to replay Exim's timeattack movie.

Thanks Warp, I think I now understood what MahatmA meant.. I'll think of that.

We're not really breaking anyone's records. Anyone's playing feats don't become less impressive because of our videos. We may be taking audience, but referring to that point is just jealousy.

Hey Contra can be really impressive! ( I don't say that only because it's my favorite game)... I will try to repair my video someday and send it too you!
I look forward to that. I didn't like Mathieu's Contra movie very much - it's too obvious and very monotonous in my opinion. I published it only because I couldn't find any errors in it.

I usually use Google to find various walkthroughs and other pages listing secrets and details of the games. This finds usually gamefaqs articles and many others too. (Though - I don't usually do it before I have already created the first version.)

I updated quotes a bit, because I don't like the standard idea that quotes should be very striking. In some forums quotes are in bold and a lot "louder" than the actual post, but phpBB's subSilver theme is way better than that. I flattened it a bit more, mostly by removing the borders, background colour and indentation. So now it looks like this:
I'd suggest moving the top 3 news items to the top of the page, so regular visitors can see isntantly if new movies have been added. _________________ "We observe the behaviour of simple folk, and derive pleasure from their defects." -Aristotle - Book of Humour

Let's see - this message was posted with the quick-reply thing. It indeed does make all the pages a little longer - causing more traffic. Bah, it doesn't allow typing the subject... Maybe I'll add that manually.

I'm almost always available in IRCNet as Bisqwit, but for these topics I think this forum is a fast-paced medium enough.

Agreed. Anyway people should learn to start new posts (instead of using the "reply" button) when they're talking about a new topic. [edit: I split the thread, the "agreed" no longer is a reply to anything]

Some BitTorrent users seem to act strangely. If the download was slow, they close the download window as soon as the download is completed. If the download was fast, they aren't so hurried on that, and they let it upload for a while. This is completely the opposite of what it should be. When downloading is slow, that's exactly when uploaders are most urgently needed (to make downloads faster )...

First of all I'm under windows so I dont know if it applies for Lynix(bisqwit) about this but Id like to ask a question. ok is it me or does this emulator seem quite choppy compared to say VirtuaNES? I can actually recognize that it runs slower than 60fps , maybe like 30?
Famtasia indeed seems to be hardcoded to display only every 3rd frame - resulting in 20 fps. I don't know why. I don't like it, but as I don't have the source code for Famtasia, I can't do anything about it. :( (And I don't know whom to bug for the source code - Nori's email address mentioned in famtasia's documentation doesn't work.) I would like to try VirtuaNES but I can't get across it: It requires "CDirectDrawDirectX 7.0 greater", and there is no way to install that to Wine. Thus I can not use it, and VirtuaNES movies are of no use for me. Btw, a 2 frame difference (3 minus 1) only counts for 0.03 seconds - it's not that significant. Yes Famtasia sometimes produces broken movies - the most frequent moment of going desync is in the very beginning. I have sometimes used autofire-start to start the game, and found out that the game has went out of sync almost immediately (was happening almost always in Solomon's Key). You just need to verify it before resuming recording. Verifying the recording every once in a while (every 2 minutes of realtime or so) is a good insurance against greater frustration, and it also helps you to spot errors you accidentally may have made when trying alternative paths.

Just for fun I tried making a tetris video yesterday. I played the first 4 levels only. But it confirmed what I already knew. Tetris is not a game where you can impress with timeattacks. Using the quicksaves makes the game too easy - reaction time is really the point of the game. It's no more interesting to watch a computer playing. It'd make a screensaver perhaps but nothing else. Also, the Nintendo Tetris is bad at reacting to keypad input so it's pain to play at slow motion. Regarding Freaksh0w's list: Rygar is already being done by Warp (with Famtasia). Blaster Master is already being done by Lezard (with VirtuaNES for his own site). Bionic Commando is already on my idea list (not that anyone is doing it). Karnov has already been suggested on this forum (but I don't know if anyone is doing it). Castlevania 3 is already on my idea list (not that anyone is doing it). I believe most of Castlevania's tricks would work in it too. I also believe it's slightly longer than Castlevania and requires quite a some of more planning. Megaman 3 was discussed in the Famtasia thread. My experience on that game (having once done a timeattack on that) is that the game has way less potential for cool plays than Megaman and Mega Man 2 (though still more than say, Contra). Also the sliding is very hard to do nonstop, which makes it aggraving to do a timeattack on. I can't say anything about Rambo.

But it would make all the message-reading pages longer, wouldn't it? I think it'd cause more traffic than benefit. It's only useful if everybody is usually replying to all discussions they're viewing. That's certainly not the case. (Also, I don't know how to install it.)

Btw if you send the fmv file to me, I can encode it to avi and publish it (and the fmv) on my page, provided the movie is good enough. I don't take submissions in multimedia file formats.

The file size limitation is more serious. The key to that is to record directly to a compressed file. A lightly encoded 16000 kbit/s mpeg4 (/xvid/divx/...) takes about 10 MB per minute (because the encoder usually encodes at much lower rate) and has nearly flawless quality - ideal for resampling with heavy settings later when the emulator doesn't need cpu power. For mpeg1 encoding and even asf the size may be bigger - I don't know about that very well.

Allright, I'll configure it so that guests can't post. :) About your question - I guess you're using Windows. I can't help with Windows software questions. but Morimoto's page mentioned "microsoft Windows Media Encorder, TMPEGenc, etc.)" which I guess fit this subject.

Ps: Perfection is not easy. Yes, using the below-mentioned tools makes playing easy - but we're not just playing here. We're attempting to perfect the games to godly level of precision - which involves handling the game like if it was The Matrix - observing every slightest detail of it to gain control of it in ways that the makers never realized. We're searching for perfection. To reach that goal, using the "cheats" provided by an emulator is irrelevant, as long as the "world" - the game - is unmodified.
This is what I added to the why / how page today. Any comments?

Legend of Kage (Kage no Densetsu) is doable in a few minutes, but you have to play a lot with quicksaves and try to press right buttons at right times to get the time down. The prerequirement in most levels is to kill certain amount of certain colored ninjas, and the ninjas appear randomly. Randomness means that different things happen when you move differently, but you never know which. By experimenting with hundreds of reloads you can get the favourable conditions to happen often. If you try it, do all the seasons until you get the "however" message.

Here are some addresses where my nesvideos page has recently been referred from (not all, I just manually picked few). It's collected from Apache's access log. Ok... 1 boomerang, 2 done, 1 pending, 1 frozen. Also, someone once sent me a message that was supposed to have a record time Marble Maddess run (3:01) as an attachment, but I never saw the attachment.
