Bisqwit, sorry if I misunderstand this, but aren't you implying here that you are smarter than Satan? If Satan masquerades as God and tricks people, surely he could trick you into thinking that Islam is derived from Satan?
I don't need to be smarter than Satan. All I need is to know whom to trust. And the one that I do trust, told me to judge a tree by its fruits.

At least the Muslims I met told me that their religion requires them to treat every guest as family.
This is not a Quranic principle or tradition. There's nothing in the Qur'an that instructs you to treat your guests in any particular manner. It is an Arabic tradition. There is a difference. Even if your Muslim friends are not Arabs -- for example, they are Kurdis -- they have received Islam from Arabs. To clarify: It is not a merit that should be attributed to Islam. The Arabs are very hospitable. As in, extremely, astonishingly and unbelievably hospitable. It is a Middle-Eastern custom that predates Islam by at least a thousand years. In the past, there used to be a covenant-level agreement: When you walk over the threshold of a house, you are under the protection of the owner of that house. This is what was going on with the doorposts in Egypt when the blood of a lamb was applied for instance, right before the events of the Exodus, or so I have heard some scholars explain. Be careful not to step on the threshold though; that would be an insult.

And that I agree with. In case it remained unclear from my previous post. As for that passage quoted earlier: What it says in the verse is, that someone says they do not permit something. Gotcha. Next? Is it wrong to document someone saying something? Lots of people said things in the Bible. It's a documentary of people saying lots of things.

To counter your above point, did you ever notice how the first few books of the Bible (the most significant part of the old testament) limit those extermination laws to the land of Canaan and its surroundings?
Extermination of people (and in some cases even taking people as spoils of war) doesn't become somehow more morally acceptable if it happens only within a region.
Who decides morals? Are not the morals that you take granted, something enforced upon you by the society you live in, and by its history? Back in the day, Israel was supposed to be a beacon among the nations, so that peoples from other nations wonder, how come these Israelites have so wise and good laws? For instance, the Israelites would have one day each week for resting. No work whatsoever would be done that day, unless to save a live. This was unheard of in other nations. In other nations, you would work every day. In other nations, it was not considered immoral to force workers to work every day throughout the year. In Israel, slaves would be treated hospitably, and given the opportunity to leave or stay at a certain time. Not so in other nations. Laws = morals. Is it morally acceptable to kill one person, if doing so saves ten? This is the category of dilemma faced by Israel, and by God of Israel (even if not literally so), when they did wage war, if I read Nach's post correctly.

But genders are not equal. I'm not speaking about social status and legislation. I'm not speaking about rank or betterness. I'm talking about biology. Male brains and female brains are hardwired differently. They focus on different things, and approach things differently.* Similarly, male and female bodies have different properties. It is in my honest opinion total nonsense and an utter misguided delusion to think that genders are equal. *) There's a sliding scale of gender. I mean stereotypical males and females. An individual may be located somewhere along the line. Some males are more feminine and some females are more masculine.

I don't think anyone believes that all religions are the same. That would be obviously false. Do you know somebody who actually believes so? I don't.
Yes, I have heard it quite many times, a few times even verbatim. Often the very attitude surfaces in arguments like when they speak of Islamic terrorism, the retort is "it's not like Christians are any better; they would do the same thing were they in a similar position", and then referring to the Crusades. Thoughts like "all religions seek to control the man" appear often when Atheists are arguing against religions. "Same shit in a different package". And there are plenty of people who even believe that Muslims, Jews, and Christians worship the same god. For instance, there are motions within the Finnish Evangelic-Lutheran Church to let the Muslims hold services in Christian churches.
Aqfaq wrote:
Maybe you mean "complacent"? I agree, it would be complacent or at least ignorant to say that all religions are the same. I'd also say it is ignorant to say that Qur'an is "all about" glorifying this one man.
Yes, I didn't remember the spelling of that word. Sorry about that. And yes, I admit that it's an oversimplification to say "all about" in that context, much like it would be an oversimplification to say the Bible is all about glorifying the jealous God the creator of the universe, or that the Bible is all about showing through numerous examples how a man by themselves does everything wicked, or that the Bible is all about covenants, or that the Bible is all about rest, or that the Bible is all about love. All of the above is true, but they're different angles of observation, and none of them are the whole story. For Qur'an I chose one particular angle of observation for the purpose of contrast to the Bible, and I believe this angle is true, even though it's not the whole story. You didn't quote the whole paragraph, so this is not clear. The contrast was that while in Islam, Muhammad is placed on a godlike pedestal, a model, a flawless prophet of Allah of unquestionable merit, whom every good Muslim defends against any and all criticism, despite his life story being recorded in gruesome detail in the Hadiths, and who is explicitly and mandatorily mentioned in the very declaration of Islamic faith -- in the Bible no prophet gets any glory; the role and task of prophets and teachers and apostles in the Bible is to be so little that the greatness of God can show through them; and anyone in the Bible who is closest to God will also be judged the harshest way.

Are you sure you didn't mean to say that the Bible is all about glorifying one god, this one conquering and enslaving and murdering and jealous god? I would advice not using all-encompassing expressions like "all about". It has a tendency to appear in contexts where the person is not really interested in knowing what something is really about. Have you even read the Qur'an?
Wow, you replied to such an old post that I can't even figure out which page it was from. In any case, I have read the Qur'an, yes. And there's a marked difference between Bible and Qur'an. Well, several marked differences really. But go on, believe the doctrine of "all religions are the same" if that makes you complacant.

Can you do 1-pixel lines? If not, then perhaps something like this. (Hastily drawn in mspaint, I don't know which brush to use but I used a fat one.) Drats. In Gimp, it's possible to choose a 3x3 brush, or a 5x5 brush, but not a 4x4 one. Radius of 1.6 gets interpreted as a 3x3 brush, and a radius of 1.7 as 5x5.

Another long-standing item from my wishlist done! Yes vote for that reason alone. Unfortunately I don't know enough of this game to say whether it's played optimally or not. At least I can't immediately spot something bad. Now who will do Willow? I see there have been two submissions for it, but none accepted so far.

Dear Bisqwit, how far back do your IRC logs reach? If it reaches to 2008, would it be possible for you to provide the .txt file? For some reason, I thought about asking you before anyone else.
I don't log IRC chat. My IRC client has a RAM-based lastlog of 8192 lines, and it obviously resets whenever I reboot, and forgets the older lines as new ones scroll in. I use this lastlog often to search if someone has mentioned me within the past few days, and to look at the context if possible. Additionally, BisqBot logs everything seen by him or by any of his agents, on any channel, except things said or mode-toggled on channels (i.e. no chatter), and has been doing so continuously since 1999. Exceptionally, I do have about two months of IRC log on #nesvideos, back when it was on Enterthegame.com, from early 2004, beginning when I created the channel for the first time after persuation by Ramzi. So, no, sorry but I don't have IRC logs from 2008.

I like the choreography you did in the balloon-collecting levels bonus stages. However, I didn't quite understand how you chose how many balloons to pop.

In the past there have occasionally been problems when people have submitted movies and they have proven to be completely ignorant to any discussion conducted on the forums regarding their submission, either because they're newbies or because they're bad at English. It's long overdue, and I don't currently have any plans and concrete ideas on how to do it, but I would suggest investigating possibilities on making the forum link more prominent on the submission pages.

If there's a TV drama about 80s computer development (and it's even semirealistic, avoiding hollywood cliches when it comes to PC technology), I don't see why this couldn't work. There has been enough drama in the history of TAS after all. Certain comparisons of Bisqwit and Hitler particularly come to my mind.

The timer keeps going on because apparently currFrameCounter in FCEUX doesn't stop incrementing when the movie ends. It's an oversight mostly. Creating my video involved the following steps, almost all of them involving game-specific edits into FCEUX's source code: - Identify and hide the score sprites. (Those are sprites that refer to tiles C0..DF) - Identify the protagonist's sprite and assign a custom palette to it. (Those are sprites that refer to tiles E0..FF) - Add audio and video recording. Use FCEUX's DrawTextTransWH function to draw text in the video. - Identify the current scene (RAM addresses 6FC, BC and BD, courtesy by Thefox), and when the scene switches, start a new recording. The current PPU scrolling position is used to offset the screen horizontally, taking advantage of the fact that each screen in this game is maximally 320 pixels wide, due to its origin as a non-scrolling flash game. The reason of this design was to make it easier to merge the different videos, and to accommodate possible situations where different players are on different sides of the same screen. - Change the recording into rerecording: If the target video file already exists, merge the new frames with the frames already in the file. - When recording video, give a different priority to background and sprites, so that when the video is updated, already recorded sprites will not be replaced with background from the other movie. - Create scripts and tools to convert the raw video & audio files into AVI. I used bits and pieces from an NTSC filter I have written previously, and MEncoder to do most of the encoding. - Debugging & exceptions, such as what to do when one of the movies goes back to the previous room and the others don't. I also wanted to do things like disabling the music so that only sound effects from all movies are played, and then disabling the SFX, so that music from only the slowest movie for each screen are played, but I couldn't accomplish this without some movies desyncing. Conversely, Mothrayas used LUA for his video and overlayed the different characters with software-generated sprites from image files, but he can tell more about it. I would presume he first run each movie and saved Tary's location (screen number, X and Y coordinates) on each frame into a file, so that the LUA script can read all those files when running the fastest movie.

Link to video And here's my synced encode! Unfortunately it includes from the top 10 entries only the seven entries made in FCEUX, because I have no prospects for recompiling or even running Bizhawk.

Because it makes a lot smaller GIF files, which load faster, consume less RAM in the browser, and are (arguably) easier to watch because of less noise in the corner of the eye when you're looking at other locations on the page. EDIT: Also, the point is to demonstrate a technique, not to show original game video. That's why some of the images shown at RockmanTricks and SuperMarioBrosTricks are of specially crafted scenes that do not even exist in the actual game. I also just finished building a Windows binary for animmerger. It can be downloaded at: http://bisqwit.iki.fi/src/arch/animmerger-1.6.2-win32.zip

And here's what it would look like if you followed my instructions: Created like so:
Language: shell

# These three commands just unoptimize the GIF and convert it back into individual image frames: gifsicle --colors=255 7143102.gif > tmp.gif gifsicle -U tmp.gif > tmp2.gif gifsicle -e tmp2.gif # Align the images: animmerger tmp2.gif.* -pc --gif=always # Convert back into an animated GIF (also do some cropping): gifsicle -O2 -o /WWW/kala/snap/kabukianimdemo.gif -l0 -d7 --crop=96,56+300x126 tile*.gif
Input image: 634242 bytes. Output image: 27921 bytes. Below you can see versions that also reduce the color resolution little (25830 bytes) or lot (22922 bytes). animmerger options used to create the second version: -Qb,4 --dc=2 -Dy2 --gamma=2.2

Step 0) If your content is a 2D game with simple scrolling (not 3D, not parallax), try to figure out and enable cheat codes that remove possible HUDs (such as health bars or score displays) that are always in a certain position of the screen even as the background moves. Step 1) Record AVI in your emulator. FCEUX has it built-in, for instance. Step 2) Convert the AVI file into PNG files. It can be done easily with MPlayer using the following commandline for instance: mplayer -vo png your_avi_file.avi It is also recommended to add a -vf scale=320:240 option (or equivalent) at this point to directly scale the screenshots to whichever resolution you want to use in the article. Step 3) Delete those PNG files you will not want to use in the animation. I use gqview or geeqie for that, but any tool that lets you inspect image files and pick&choose&delete those you don't want will do, including Windows explorer. For GIF size, it may also be be wise to reduce the framerate, by i.e. deleting every even frame, or perhaps even reduce the rate by 3 by deleting 2 out of every 3 frames. Step 4A) If your content is a 2D game with simple scrolling (not 3D, not parallax), use animmerger to align the images together into animation frames with static background. With a static background the GIF will be a lot smaller than if the animation scrolls. For instance: animmerger 0000*.png -pc --gif=always The difference between a normal animation and one with a static background can clearly be seen in these two pictures respectively: original ; stabilized (from animmerger web page). The former image file is three times as large as the latter one. Step 4B) If your content is a 3D game with a moving camera, or it has complicated scrolling, the background can not be made static, but animmerger is still a great way to do high quality dithering for the animation and reduce its color resolution to make a smaller GIF file. For instance: animmerger 0000*.png -pc --noalign -Qd,16 --gamma=2.2 --gif=always As far as I know, animmerger is still the best tool in the world for quantizing and dithering animations with respect to result quality. Sometimes you need to dedicate and spend time finetuning its commandline options to get the most pleasing result though. See --fullhelp for details. Step 5) Merge the individual GIF files produced by animmerger into a single animated GIF file. It can be done with gifsicle, with a command such as: gifsicle -O2 -o combined.gif -l0 -d3 tile????.gif At this point you can also crop the animation further by using gifsicle's --crop parameter. It is highly recommended to crop the animation leaving only the region that contains content relevant to the article. Not only will doing so produce a smaller and thus faster loading file, it will also take less estate in the article and consume less RAM in the browser, making it thrice more mobile-browsing friendly. Step 6) Preview the GIF file in your browser to check it looks allright perfect. If necessary, go back to some earlier step. Step 7) The GIF file must be uploaded to an image hosting service so that it can be linked to on the article page. I don't know the current recommendations on TASVideos about this, so I'll stop here. Back when/then I would put my images directly to the TASVideos media server, but times are different today.

The only problem I had with the TAS block is that the commentary during the Ikaruga section concentrated entirely on the run, as if it were a regular speedrun, and did nothing to explain things about TASing in general, such as what is involved in creating a two-person TAS.
