Bump. I really want a TASVideos T-Shirt. My debate team used this site called CustomInk to design team T-Shirts. Perhaps the same could be done for TASVideos? If people make designs using this site and individuals order them for their own purposes, I figure that might be able to circumvent any issues with copyright. I'd try this myself, but I'm not very artistic. Anyone want to give this a shot?

I don't mean a deep level of asm. I am saying that you should know how data is represented, how control logic works underneath the hood, etc. I think that having an understanding of assembly is complementary with data structures and algorithms. Most of those should be covered while learning Python and a lower level language like C++. At that point, it would be helpful, at least it was for me.

I'm halfway through a great book on Python but I'm kind of hoping there's a better IDE to use than the one Python provides. As a noob I have a bad habit of forgetting indents, colons, mixing up variable types, etc and I'm hoping there's an IDE that's more forgiving with that (eg/ adding colons automatically after an if statement).
You don't want a an IDE that does this work for you. Maybe that's good for people just starting up, but you clearly have that much under your belt, so don't start using training wheels when you never had to. My personal view is that aspiring programmers should start with Python to learn how to describe a program without getting into too many technicals (Lua is alright for this, too). Once you've learned all the major concepts for it (making your own objects is a must) and make some non-trivial program with it, I would move on to C or C++ to get a better idea about how programming actually works. Finally, at least understanding how an assembly language relates to C is imperative. Assembly language is the closest thing to what computers see that humans can read, so realizing how these three levels translate will make you a better programmer. Do you need to know all of this to make money? Absolutely not; I made quite a bit of money on freelance sites doing PHP when I was 16, even after the ridiculous fees they charged. Do you need to know this to write good, efficient code? In my opinion, yes. You'd be shocked some of the critical mistakes you will make without this understanding. By the way, if you see me on IRC, feel free to ask for help with programming and related subjects. I love helping people, but forums are slow for me. Also, if you want some useful practice, BizHawk can always use more hands. ;)

I've been hoping for a run like this for a long time...granted, I was hoping to see Pokemon hacked into a different game and see that get TASed, but that would probably take too long, so this is definitely worth my yes vote.

Rough real-time improvement of 39 frames. Only final fight is modified. I'd improve it stylistic wise and resubmit it, but I doubt that you'd consider this enough work to warrant a co-authorship. Then again, this game's publishability is questionable to begin with. In the end, the important thing is I've proven that you make mistakes, and perhaps this is enough to slow down your NES reign of terror! >_<
If this run is being rejudged then it should be with this version that has some input from Brandon to make the run 39 frames shorter. He doesn't believe it is enough for co-authorship but if a mod will make the adjustment of switching the files they might as well add him on as well.
Done. Thanks for the recognition. I'll publish shortly.

I agree with this idea in principal. I can see a place for three or maybe four tiers. However, I think we should also consider a place to accept some of the borderline "moon"-tier publications that wouldn't fall under the any% or 100% categories, like walkathons, minimum button presses, or the endless Super Metroid categories.
Well, come up with a name for this category and some criteria we could use! I will seriously consider good well thought out tier suggestions
So does that mean I should start working on an improvement to both of my submissions? :o Demonstrations Overview
  • Aims to achieve esoteric goals that are not possible for a human to accomplish.
Entertainment Requirements
  • Important to entertain, but not to be inherently entertaining. Some people will like the concept, others will not.
Technical Requirements
  • Must do something that is perceived to be impossible without tools.
  • The goal must be executed optimally.
Game and Goal choice
  • Must be clearly definable as a game.
  • Unless a very good reason is given as to why to do otherwise, the run must beat the game. See Vault for details.
  • The goal must answer some interesting "what if" question. It should make people curious as to see how the author accomplished their goal.
  • Speed does not always have to be the thing minimized (Ex. Points, items, jumps, button presses, input frames, etc. can also be).
  • When speed is not the thing being minimized, it should be optimized as a secondary goal where it does not hurt the primary one.
There's a start.

I got around to re-uploading this encode to TVC, and this time around, it processed fully. I linked the publication to this encode instead and unlisted the bad one. Enjoy!

Representative democracy has, and always will be, a way for the very rich to construct an oligarchy while making the people think they have control over it. Sure, it'd be nice if we had a voting system that was more friendly to 3rd party candidates, some direct democracy check to stop nonsensical and unpopular policies like the drug war, or a mechanism to actually enforce the constitution and prevent those in power from trampling on it, but what incentive does anyone have to give you these things? None, that's what. No pride of getting re-elected or altruistic desire for the people trumps all of the money that could be embezzled from campaign donations mega-corporations (I'd say even Ron Paul did this at the point in which his related by marriage campaign manager got paid from it) or the security of knowing that no one with connections to the military industrial complex has a reason to get you assassinated. Nothing will change until we put serious pressure on those in power to stop what they are doing, but that too will be fraught with practical and moral problems. Therefore, Nihilism 2012!

I guess the upload to TASVideosChannel trimmed the movie without notifying me (YouTube has a bad habit of doing this). Oh well. I linked the original stream on my channel back to the page, so until I can be bothered to try re-uploading the encode to TVC (Will be a while considering it's stored on a mostly corrupted external harddrive), that's where it'll remain.

Thought you might be interested to know that your original run of this game syncs all the way through on SNESHawk, but that this movie does not. I guess Snes9x 1.53 was more accurate.

Since when "Glitched" obsoletes general branch?
Both use the same glitch, just to different measures...I guess both of them can remain, but the branch count for this game is getting pretty big, and I don't see any extra entertainment in a warped 2p run vs. a warpless 2p run.

I can confirm that the console verified run does not sync and that BizHawk properly converts the .FCM file (Though this did expose an issue with my new .BKM to .FM2 Converter).

I wrote an .BKM to .FM2 Converter. This should be useful for comparing accuracy and detecting syncing issues, as well as stopping jerks from accusing me of trying to "prevent anybody from going back and using FCEUX after they've messed with it once." >_< Edit: port0 and port1 are now always enabled. Before, I had it just carry over those headers from the .BKM if they were there, possibly from a previous conversion from a .FM2 to a .BKM. This is apparently problematic though as it will never play back input unless these headers are there (Or at least port0). I noticed this when doing some syncing tests here.

Yes, just like I know they're taken out of the later versions of the regular one.
You aren't the average gamer. I didn't even know about game revisions until I came to TASVideos. At the same time, I knew about the warp glitch and how the DX fixed it since the late 90s / early 2000s, and I did this before I had ever used the internet and without a strategy guide. Even the most hardcore LA players who don't do crazy homebrew / TAS stuff like us wouldn't know a thing about version numbers.

In any case, we've rejected every SMAS run which had an NES counterpart.
SMAS doesn't fix any game breaking glitches, so actually comparing the two is pointless. I was just being hypothetical.

So they are very similar, but I think it's still interesting to have a glitched run on the DX version since it was a remake which they tried to remove tricks and all.
The glitches are removed in LA 1.0 and 1.1 too.
Do I have a bad dump? Because I have one labeled as 1.2 and I can still do the screen warp glitch without any issues. Also, in 1.0, I go through the dog house and end up a few screens away from the Bottle Grotto. Even if the glitches were fixed in a different LA GB version and this run could be done on a GB version as well, it wouldn't make any difference. The average gamer doesn't check to see the version numbers of their games, nor even know that they exist. All casual gamers can tell the difference between an obvious remake of a game, especially when it's in color, and the original in greyscale. For those who know the game well but not as well as us TASers, they know that the most known bugs are taken out of the DX version, so when they see the DX run can be completed in a mere 5 and a half minutes, it makes them stop and say "Huh? Let's see..." If Super Mario All-Stars was in a similar boat, I'd support a publication from it. You need to consider these to be two separate games and not a mere recoloring because that's what they are. Voting an easy yes. Don't obsolete this with the new LA run. On a side note, why not have a run that completes the DX exclusive Color Dungeon? I figure that's a significant enough part of the remake show off somewhere, although it'd probably have to start from SRAM as I doubt anyone wants to include it into the main run, though there might be some way to corrupt a save into getting you in the right place (I'm pretty sure you can start the game off with all of the items if you turn off the GameBoy while deleting a save with the game completed or something like that).

Note that nanogyth has provided suggestions and a test encode that fixes the issues I found with rendering the credits. These should be implemented before publication (Probably by me). Edit: Done. Will publish shortly after uploading.

Check out this encode of the latest GB LA submission using this modified Hybrid Encode Script that uses ngdb. Watch the credits...it looks kind of messed up. This is a shame because this is the first run I've ever tried encoding with ngdb and I am really tired of TASBlend. Any idea what went wrong? TASBlend produces far superior results for that scene.

See, I certainly agree with you with full fledged debug modes like Sonic 1's, but for a game like Mega Man 3, I feel like both could be acceptable as the debug mode is severely limited. I can't teleport or auto-kill everything, so I figure there's still a challenge in finding the best time using these methods.

I once asked why there was no usage of the Player 2 Tricks used in the Mega Man 3 TAS as they would obviously save time. Someone responded (I think it was DarkKobold) that this would be against the rules as they would be considered cheat codes. I'm not sure I agree with that. Really, these options were probably used by the developers to debug the game, and they forgot to remove them or chose not to. Perhaps they are not legitimate enough to obsolete the original run, but certainly, in a world where this is publishable, these unintended tricks could potentially be utilized in a separate branch. Other games have debug modes as well, such as Sonic 1. Is there an audience for these kinds of runs? Would people prefer to see playarounds with them as opposed to regular speedruns?

AlbinoBlacksheep.com has done this many a time for videos of SMB runs. I filed it as "The content is in the public domain or is not eligible for copyright protection." and went into more detail in the description. All of such disputes were accepted.

This. If a MMX walkathon deserved publication, the entire game minus the dash button would make for an interesting run. I can't imagine it would. Dashing is what made this series. But hey, you could try that. Until then, I vote no.
