Hyrule Field is very hilly, so I'm guessing that you're correct spiderwaffle because all the hills on HF must have given sidehopping a huge advantage, which I guess was offset by frame inaccuracy. For those curious, sidehopping on flats takes a press of A ever 21 frames. You can easily check the optimal frame by pressing A 7 frames before you touch the ground.

Yeah honestly adelikat, the world will not end if you let this (or any) submission sit in the workbench for more then 5 microseconds. This was well played and I had given it a yes. I'm curious though Deign, I wasn't paying too close attention but could input have been ended earlier?

For me it's hard to say, because this is how I TAS: -Turn on my laptop -Check my email, log on to TASvideos, log onto facebook. Noodle on other sites if they are fresh on my mind. -Log onto AIM, sign on to IRC -see if any people are on to talk with, if there are, I start chatting -Noodle around on websites, maybe watch a movie -Sometime around here I might open up an emulator -Once emulator is open, load MHS for memory watching, and in virtual dub load any movies I would need to watch while making my run -Go up to get something to eat, or go to the bathroom -Come back, see that someone cool is on IRC or AIM, and start chatting -maybe by now start TASing, but slowly and while chatting at the same time -go get something to drink, or start stretching -by now, someone has said something funny in IRC or there's a huge discussion I start taking part in -maybe play a few more frames in my movie, then reload all websites to see if there's anything new -suddenly get bored, and watch a video game movie -I get distracted and watch some youtube videos. and of course, once each one is done, I click on the next and keep going. -I maybe realize I have not done enough TASing, and go back to emulator and try some more -at the same time however, someone starts a cool conversation in IRC again, which I partake in -Time's up. Either I have to go to work, school, or family is home and I need to start interacting with others. TASing achieved: 15-450 frames. total time: 5+ hours. Now, every now and then I will have a TAS burst and will, like a good TASer should, TAS all the way with no distractions, and these days are awesome. Like I'll finish a boss in one night, or complete 3 stages in one day. But for the most part.... yeah, what I accomplish is what's described above.

Of course you don't see anything bad with that, because it's your work he's copying. Now, if he done all that on his own, you might be having a huff since it wouldn't have been you that created the "currently perfect" strategies for that room.

Skipping over a lot of water, and not having to swim slowly can do that. Especially because he did it like 4 times.

Only invalid when comparing to times that are achieved without it. However, any future run that aims for in-game time should use the clock stopping just as I do. Any real time run of the game (which will not be as good, IMO) doesn't need to use it, and should be using real time frames for comparisons, not the end level timer. (which is bad because the real time frame counter can be inaccurate as I've already stressed.) Over at SDA, things will work fine because the clock stopping has been labeled as a separate category, so clock stop achieved times cannot obsolete non clock stop times for when the game finally has individual level runs uploaded.

I'll try. When you get older, you get longer legs and therefore you take longer steps. Often as a grown up, you don't wanna wear yourself out by side hopping because you get tired fast. But as a kid, you have lots of energy and shorter legs. So when you walk backwards as a child, your energy isnt fully used, thus young Link moves faster when he is side hopping.
So in Hyrule you reach old age at 17/18? Also, I thought that like less than 0.005% of all video games ever actually have stamina as being a factor of the game. Also, AKA, keep in mind, you went across all of hyrule to get that 3 second gain. In swordlesslink's TAS I think there aren't going to be any segments where he needs to backwalk for that long, he would probably do a superslide. Sidehopping does have a much faster initial velocity that makes it better for short distances, since backwalking takes a few frames to set up and sidehopping is still superior on any slope.

You made the right choice; don't show WIPs publicly, only to those that can spot mistakes by having TASed SM64. If you want, you can avoid posting each time you get somewhere new, and simply in your forum profile keep updated with what course/star you're on. Anyone that looks in the mario page will see your posts and see what level you're at. It's always worked for me.

more reasons: -If I kept going as I would, but avoided the text trick completely, I would have a slower time than the speedrun world record in 4-04 rescue, both in-game and real time. -I've had one run rejected for fuzzy rules, I do not want that to happen again. I was going to avoid the trick, use it once in 4-04, and still claim the run as in-game time based. That probably wouldn't have sat well with judges, because it would have been a hodgepodge mesg of in-game and realtime goals. -The text trick I've noticed breaks up some monotony where I just move to the right and fly over eveything. You'll see when I'm done, but the trick is adding a ton of variety to the run, and I only just finished 1-04. -cpadolf's run was semi-published (truncated rejected it so that he could insert it with the published run), so that's a bad example to use because there was a perfectly fine realtime goal SM by hero of the day. Is there already a mischief makers movie published? no? that's what I thought. -Sonic games aim for fastest in-game times, then don't care about the slightly longer delays at the end of stages. -There are many games where the real time speedrunning communities aim for the lowest in-game times. Mischief Makers is one of the most in-game time oriented speedrunning games I have ever seen. -As I mentioned, I have spotted mistakes that I am fixing. At the risk of repeating myself, I do not want to submit a near perfect version then start working on a v2. My aim is to make as perfect a movie as I can make the first time around. -

The amazingness of the run comes from the speed of play.
The text trick adds to the overall speed of play. It will be quite similar to people liking the switch in Super Mario World from flying over the stage all the time to bouncing around on the ground and interacting with stuff. -I want the movie to include every up to date trick and technique. Leaving it out seems silly, especially because it's a trick I know about currently, not something I discover 5 days before submission. -My movie, my choice. Right?

Here's the thing... I don't want my run to be rejected because of this: The run is supposed to be fastest in-game time as the main goal, but I don't attain the fastest in-game times because I don't use the text trick to stop the timer in some of the stages. But I would have used the trick in 4-04 to make Teran walk faster (and it stops the clock), and that just doesn't make sense to only use it there and not anywhere else like I was going to do. In terms of frames, if I were to redo to include the text trick, the total frame count of the movie would actually increase, but the overall times I would be getting would decrease. As for a version 2... it's so much easier to make every stage perfect now then to go over and do another version. Compare: "Mischief Makers by Comicalflop in 42:12.56" obsoleted by "Mischief Makers by Comicalflop in 42:36.72" The second version would, in fact, be longer because of the text trick. Remember Nitsuja's S+K3 movie? Only 4 stages looked different in the 2nd version, because it was a touchup movie. If I were to continue, the touchup movie would only be a scant few stages that are improved, mostly because of adding the text trick. So the amount of time it'd take me to start a completely new version is actually more than if I redo the stages now, because remember I can hex in stages that are already perfect (which is a good percentage of the stages done so far, really.) And plus, I've become a perfectionist. I'm considering redoing the Luigi Raceway course, I know I will be restarting the Spiderman 3 WIP, DKC2 102% is already restarted and only on stage 2, et. etc. Here's how it all falls down: 1-01: complete 1-02: complete with text trick 1-03: complete with text trick 1-04: complete, 1 frame saved 1-05: complete with text trick 1-06: hexed 1-07: complete 1-08: hexed 1-09: complete 1-10: hexed 2-01: complete with text trick 2-02: hexed 2-03: hexed 2-04: hexed 2-05: hexed 2-06: currently reworking last round 2-07: possible redo*, if not, hexed 2-08: hexed 2-09: complete 2-10: hexed 2-11: redo because of known desynch (this one will hurt the most) 3-01: possible redo* 3-02: hexed 3-03: hexed 3-04: possible redo* 3-05: hexed 3-06: hexed 3-07: hexed 3-08: redo to account for luck manipulation 3-09: possible redo*, most likely hexed 3-10: possible redo somewhere because jump or hurdle event might desynch. All dash events are perfect, and will be hexed (because they are a pain in the ass to do) * means a possible improvement because of the text trick.

<Comicalflop> I aim to be done by March 2008. Tack on another 3+ months guys. Sorry. Over at speedruns.net a mischief makers run got submitted. The entire quality is.... well, not good. (not even the song sequences are cancelled as soon as possible. And practically every stage is slower than nitsuja's/the speedrun times.) But in my never ending quest for perfection, I have to... yes, I hate to say it, redo.* This should be just a few touch ups on a few stages. A lot of hexing can and will be done. But still, oy vey. I am still 100% dedicated to the completion of this movie. *Edit: shit, I need to do more touchups. Restarting from the beginning.... again again again.

I love how you manage to praise Taco through the roof, yet still manage to squeeze in just a tiny little "saturn is awesome and the best" moment. You're starting to get better, by showing WIPs, removing the "my work is perfect and I appreciate how everyone is slowly getting to my level" comments and encouragin more, but you still need to remove the urge to insert "saturn is awesome" comments completely.

I'll be out skiing on that weekend, so be sure to check in with me via AIM or whichever so that we can pour over every possible glitch/route detail and make a "todo list" so that you can test every single possibility. Good luck!

Probably. Weatherton and I had thousands of ideas for pulling off the 2 player shortcuts despite it being 1 player. And the glitches in that course should make eyes bug out...

I personally think Sherbert Land promises to be even better. There are no known fast shortcuts, so we can expect to see the whole track and a lot of perfect jumps. (Bonus style points if you somehow manage to jump over a penguin.)
ah haha, ahhhhhhhhh hahahahahahahahahaha! Also, you're forgetting bowser's castle. That stage will be quite boss if every conceivable shortcut is pulled off. But seriously, don't get overexcited just yet. I still need to finish MM first, and it doesn't help that I'm stuck on one event for 2+ weeks, I have work and school and play rehearsals increasing, and that my family wants me to permanently quit TASing.

and then I posted a picture of an ice sculpture. Uch, explaining jokes always kills them. Anyways, I saw from the OoS topic that you'd stick with just paper mario. Sarcasm aside, you really will learn so much faster and better if you do not distract yourself with hundreds of games at once. I distracted myself to hell and back when I started out, and I wish to god that someone had been as firm with me as I am with you to stick with one game and don't do anything else until that one game is done. If you need any more advice about anything, I'm perfectly willing to share what I've learned over the past year+.

This won't happen. Runs are rejected if it's proven that there is a faster WIP in the works. Seriously, listen to Tompa, Soulrilvers, and SwordlessLink. They are very skilled TASers who know what they are talking about, and are doing a good job on both OoS and OoA. Find some other game. Better yet, since I've been monitoring how many topics you post in, find ONE game and stick with it. I can't tell you enough how important that is, especially to fledgling newbies such as yourself.

(E) ROM will most likely not make the movie play at all, due to the timing differences and such. Have you tried using the same plugins that I use with the U rom? If mupen is not working for you at all, I'm going to be individually encoding all courses and uploading them to youtube anyways, and very likely a downloadable .avi will be made very quickly as soon as it's submitted. Besides Moo Moo Farm, no courses will be shown until submission anyways, so being able to play the .n64 in mupen won't happen a lot anyways since I won't be revealing any courses after that. My goal is to as soon as Mischief Makers is done, to get back to work on this, and complete and show a WIP with MMF as soon as possible. Props to all people who are still patiently waiting for this.

it would be best to post it here. but honestly, the SMB walkathon was posted by Bisqwit as a curiosity to see if it could be done. The only entertaining walkathon was the SMW one, and it was rejected. I wouldn't even bother trying to make one.
