as I mentioned to you, don't let someone else's work make you leave. you could consider Baxter's full run idea, or there are plenty of other N64 games that you could try out.

Sandbag: antd is doing fastest Fox, and has much better/more entertaining techniques that those. he has WIPs of his run on youtube, PM me if you want a link. to everyone: In order to find one final solution for a pure entertainment, acceptable run, I'm going to bring up Baxter's (4thish time quoted) idea and make a revision to it: Baxter wrote: For me, the perfect movie of this game would: - Get all secret characters (this means playing the main game three times, if I'm not mistaken) - Once, beat very hard as fast as possible. - Once, go for highest score, get pacifist on all stages (exept for master hand) if possible) - Once, just go for entertainment, and show off stuff Then, 3 characters are unlocked, and the movie should continue on getting record times on break the targets. this will unlock the last character, and you can make record times on break the targets for everyone. Finally, make records for every character on board the platforms... the stop the movie. If all speed/score goals were thrown out of the roof, and pure entertainment by juggling all opponents to kill them the way the game intended (in a fast manner of course, but not as fast as the Fox/Kirby deaths) by racking up insane amounts of %damage and then a killing combo/blow to send themc lear out of the arena for the first 3 playings of games, and then beat the world records for all bonuses, and then as a final addendum take on of antd's concept demos: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=71yUbTsR54E http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4ymnabzRLI&mode=related&search= (1 handicapped character vs. 3 lvl 9 CPU's) and apply it to the last 9 characters that didn't play through the game, in order to show every single character A) beat a bonus and B) fight against oppponents. This might make it way longer, but I feel it would be complete and would be a pure entertainment run. thoughts? anyone want to consider doing this? (TASing SSB is not that difficult actually, I'm sure antd and I can teach someone)

I could've been almost done with SS Anubis, but for some reason I was soooo tired and I napped for 4 straight hours. I'm still a teensy bit drowsy but I'll get to working on it now and see how far I get tonight. Glad that many parts had to be watched again... my feeling is that as soon as Floyd is gotten that many parts will be done so fast that audiences have to rewind over and over again. That'll make watching it fully not take 3-4ish hours but many more, hehe. Edit: Fucking best story ever: well, I *caught* the moving platform. Literally. I did a test run, went running after it at a sub optimal angle, jumped and garbbed and hung onto the edge of the moving platform. HAHAHAHAHA. So I'll try to optimally run at at and jump on, and snipe the cell door block behind me and above me, hopefully before I reach the other side. But in essence: mucho time is going to be saved. In addition to having already saved a good amount of time so far (I estimate.)

I think mmbossman is using 1.2, because that is what nfq used. 1.0 and 1.1 made mupen shut down apparently.

Why don't you watch what AKA posted, eh? They get to the snowball ledge using the bomb staircase method.
I had assumed the youtube link was for the Snowhead ascension, getting past the big Gorn blowing wind. I had already seen that youtube link for the ascension, so I'll take a look at what AKA posted. edit: it looked good. Can definetly be optimized, but I think the method is there. I especially liked using the sword gltich and the bomchus to get past the snowballs quickly, and even more so using bouncing off of walls/objects to gain speed while rolling as the goron.

Ah, of course not, that is a much smaller distance. Although maybe something tricky can be done, like setting up a spike roll on an above platform, then rolling off a jump into the air, and landing below and going through the many snowballs and up the stairs. (this based on my memory of the SDA snowhead, where he flipped at weird angles to catch ledges below him.)

if you roll very slowly without gaining much ground byt tilting very gently on the analog (needed in realtime playing to make some jumps in reaching snowhead anyways), you'll build up the spike after barely moving very far. However, a TAS should have no trouble in rolling at full speed and getting spike the moment the first big snowball comes along.

1. Goron spike rolling up the ramp and smashing the snowballs will be faster. 2. You cannot roll in place with Goron rolling as well as swimming as Zora i.e. can't turn around in tight circles as much. Also, I believe shooting Ghot keeps him at his position and firing lightning bolts at you (I think, I definetly remembered him running around the circle and not standing still when my brother played by goron rolling way back when he played it on the console.)

You either have wrong settings/ROM, or didn't delete the .fla file. I have just reviewed the entire thing from the very beginning, no savestates used, after having deleted the .fla file and it ran perfectly. This is not a game that desynchs at all, unlike Rayman 2 or Majora's Mask. as I start SS Anubis, is there anything you'd want to see changed/mistakes that you may have noticed?

this is a savestate at the beginning where I made my changes. if you have correct settings and ROM and everything, the last thing that seems to be pretty common is the .fla file in the mupen save file directory, which you must manually delete all the time if you want to watch the entire movie from the very beginning. if you load a savestate however, it should work fine, so try loading the savestate I just provided and see if that helps.

Redoing the last few areas was the best idea: Goldwood Revised overall, 15 seconds saved!!!!! no mistakes, much smoother, enemies were killed faster, some were skipped, a little more damage was taken but that's ok because it'll all be refilled at the start of SS Anubis anyways.

1) We still strive for perfection/optimization. 2) Perfection can be entertaining (not the case here. oh well.) Although yes, entertainment on its own is incredibly desired. 3) through it all, people still desire to see TASes of games they played/play, as evidenced most threads starting with "Has anyone played this great game? anyone want to run it?" published movies should follow those three criteria IMO. (well, the first two MUST, there are some gems in unknown games however.) RIP Super Smash Bros.

Um, I don't want to start an argument, but doesn't that suggest that unpopular, unoptimized movies are published? It seems to me that's not the case for this site. unoptimized movies are rejected for not being perfect (because Tool Assistance can make perfect movies, and we strive for perfection) and popularity does have a big role in how many people will watch a movie and vote/judge on it, in addition to how many people will download the movie if it gets published. I agree that entertainment is also a huge factor, and that some people don't find it in my run but I was correct in stating that popularity and optimization DO have a role in a movie's publication.

wow, I go away from my computer to watch 30 minutes of Pirates of the Caribbean 2, and in that time 2 pages of posts have been filled out... I don't even know what to make of this submission after so much controversy. For some strange reason, I'm pretty much in full agreement to both sides of the argument to publish/reject it. I think it both has reasons to have it published, due to popularity and optimization, and to have it rejected, because of repetiveness, "fuzzy" goals, and the website's standards. (and it didn't take me long to make because it's a shorter movie, and I'm not emotionally attached to it like I was with DKC2.) For those wishing to have a different TAS of SSB... it's doubtful that'll happen. antd has begun to express disinterest in the fastest Fox (and has become heavily interested in Mario Kart 64) and I currently have no intention of doing this game again, due to the controversy and Jet Force Gemini (it is incredibly addicting to make. And will take me a year or more.) The other option to have a "full" run, playing the game 3 times then doing all the bonuses, would take a long time to do, and I don't think at the moment myself or antd has interest in it.

I guess aim up and chuck a grenade, and hope I can time it perfectly. But that's (technically) 3 levels away, so I'll worry aboyt that later. I noticed the bosses' invulnerable moments, is there a visual trigger for that? obviously I'm going to fire and have the tri-rocket/Floyd/grenade/whatever hit on the first possible frame, but is there a visual change to signify when you can hit the boss? Sniper rifle I am definetly going to take. There are way more places where you have to snipe them from afar (especially far away and up high), and someone on SDA mentioned that the Sniper rifle is very powerful, and like you suggested makes Floyd's crosshair Zoom as well. And, sniping enemies from VERY far away as I'm approching sounds like a very attractive idea. Just saved 12 seconds total. 1 more room to go and then Goldwood revised is done.

Or far I can throw the grenades, because I remember them not going very far. Meh maybe Juno and Floyd can kill the bosses fast enough anyways. It was just a thought, I'm sure that Floyd's turbo firing and perfect Tri-Rocket Firing will dispatch the bosses quickly. Ooh man, staying up all night last night has completely thrown off my sleeping shcedule. I'll try working a little more on v3 at Goldwood, see if I can get maybe one or two areas done. I do have two straight days of potential solid TASing, so assuming I go nonstop I might be able to catch up to Tawfret with an improved version fixing the mistakes I've spotted. saved one second so far in the first area I was improving, hitting the sniper drone better and causing the big enemy to die earlier, and preserved more ammo by using headshots against the normal drones. Next area hoping to improve the flying drones section by aiming and walking towards them, and using the recoil machine gun to hit 100% of the time. Tricky, but I hope I can do it.

Yes that timing is actually extremely precise. I have to move Kirby in the exact right postition and velocity, have him land at the exact right spot on the edge of the platform, and suck the enemy at the exact right time. one frame sooner or later for any of those three and the swallow maneuver would not work, either optimally or at all. About the "possible in real time" debate... (I'm not going to get into the entertainment debate, I just want to address this one thing because it is insunuated that a real time video can accomplish the same things that I did) perhaps it's not clear. psychoticworm's video was tool assisted by using savestates, so he'd do the same level over and over and over again until he got the desired affect. (Which I imagine what the very first TASes were kind of like. This also does not make it a "realtime" video.) A single segment High Score run, with no tools whatsoever, is not comparable to my run with the high accuracy that I have; psychoticworm's real time (no savestates) score is 1.8 million, which is 700,000 less than what I got, and very unimpressive from what I hear. psychoticworm's savestate video gets a 125,00ish less score, but you'll still notice HUGE differences between our videos. 1) practically everything in my movie is optimal. There are only a few places where psychoticworm gets a similar time to mine, and never by less than a second. And that's for already very short fights lasting no more than ten seconds. All of my fights are incredibly optimised, I don't think any fewer times in time units can be squeezed out of the very short battles. example: 2 second Pikachu/Metal Mario fights, 5 second DK fight, 7 second Fox fight, etc. It is my belief that nobody in real time can get any shorter time that psychoticworm's savestate video, and my stages all had shorter fights than that. Ergo, a real time video cannot beat my TAS stages. 2) All of the longer fights- the teams, Masterhand, and Mario Bros.- are SIGNIFICANTLY better than real time fights can be. I got way more bonuses in a much shorter time, because of using tools. And, in real time there is a 1/1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 chance that someone can get: Brother's Calamity, No Damage, and True Friend in the Mario Bros. stage. I got all three of those bonuses, and in 10 seconds time. It is not physically possible in real time to get anywhere near an accomplishment as that. Maybe one or (if lucky) two of those bonuses, especially on very hard difficulty, but all three and getting to within ten second in real time is not possible. 3) Luck Manipulation. Real time videos do not have the extreme frame by frame manipulating of enemies that I have. I can, on EVERY single frame, make an enemy react differently. This was done to make Metal Mario and Pikachu die in two seconds, and for the Mario Bros. to react JUST SO to not damage me, not damage my ally, and have Luigi die first. I also manipulate the Masterhand to perform the attacks that I can keep the damage going the best. 4) I nearly matched (as per my goals, I'm not miffed by it) and beat the world records for Break the Target and Board the Platform. (interestingly, and off topic, but this is what people wanted when nico's submission was rejected, and yet NO ONE commented on how they liked the BtT and BtP stages, despite having demanded that they be included. weird.) The BtT and BtP stages cannot get close to world records without playing them over and over again, and it is improbable to beat or match a world record in real time, since the real time world records required playing the bonus stages not in 1 player adventure mode, but in bonus stages so that they can be played over and over. For referencing, I made a Microsoft Excel file documenting the time differences. The score differences are listed in the submission text. You'll notice that for EVERY single stage I did, compared to psychoticworm's two videos: It was done in a shorter time A higher score was acheived. Both of which are the (*fuzzy* according to some people) goals of this run. Both of which cannot be easily beaten in real time. I hope I cleared up the "this can be done in real time" debate. I really took a back seat to this submission, prefering to not get involved in the many debates that arose from this submission, especialyl since heavy involvement and conflict led one of the previous SSB submissions to get rejected. (I'm sorry, but I read the entire thread for that submission, and the "rejected for repetitiveness and boringness" was an excuse for personal feelings that were hurt in the heated arguments in that thread. IMO.) I really wanted to sit outside the circle and see who would defend the arguments in support of me, which seems to be 74-84% of the people. (the range based on the opinion that the 'meh' voters didn't hate it.)

I remember from the previous submission that pressing up+down caused it but I didn't know that was the velocity explanation for it. I definetly do not understand the pattern that the blades were placed and the blocks that were destroyed however, that still eludes me.

Ok! I finally got to watch the m movie. I think that you know where you need to fix things up a bit. All in all a very soildly done run till now. Just a few ??? for you. Are the life capacity upgrades really worth it? I mean you have 5 of those little meters (each green on the center thing is 1 meter), and when normally playing I rarely lost more than 1 or 2 rings when being careful. The only spot that I really had trouble in was with the final boss (evil.) The ammo upgrades would be very nice to get as they would make planning ammo-use later much easier. How many for each weapon are you going to get? Also, how hard is is to grab the guns the drones drop? I remember going for very long amounts of time off of those until I got a real box. One last thing, I'm not sure how quickly the game switches weapons. But would it be possible to jump from pistol to machine-gun to drop the weak drones and then wail on the strong one? Or is there a pause of waiting for the gun to come out. Anyways, keep up the good work. Looking forwards to updates!
I'm going to be charging head first into battles and such, and ignoring damage instead of trying to avoid it, so I've been collecting the gemini health upgrades just in case. They are also very good health refillers when collected, making it so that I don't have to collect the gems (even though they are on the way.) Plus, the Gemini health upgrades are all practically on the direct path, so might as well. Capacity upgrades = less picking up ammo. and capacity upgrades is ESSENTIAL for the rockets and sniper rifle. U nfortunately, the ammo that drones drop only adds ammo for the pistol, machine gun, or plasma shotgun (I believe? I know it only gives for 3 weapons, the pistol and machine gun two of them.) The game switches weapons VERY fast, especially if using turbo A or B, as evident in Twisted Eye's Floyd test run. So I don't need to save certain weapons to the D pad fortunately. In the two levels I've done so far I reserve the pistol for sniping and the machine gun for killing, since the pistol cannot fire mor ethen 7 shots quickly before needing to recharge. In my redo, I might just use the machine gun the entire time becuase the shots are faster, and the recoil only happens in consecutive shots. Or maybe not, the pistol works fine on the sniping drones. The final Mizar boss? bah, with Floyd, Tri Rockets and a very solid strategy I'm going to tear him apart like he was a piece of sponge cake. In fact, that applies to all the bosses in this game, since I'll have Floyd and the Tri Rockets for all characters at their respective bosses. oh, question about bosses: Can I chuck a grenades at them? I'm thinking of thowring grenades at them beforehand, so it'll explode once the boss is ready to be hit, and fire a tri rocket early to also hit them on the first possible frame, so hitting them witha grenade and tri rocket at the same time basically. And see if I can hit more than once area at the same time (like in the very first boss.) With Floyd helping, is it possible to kill the boss in 1-2 rounds? :P

Xkeeper is right. The file should be reviewed for completeness before submitted. When I made SSB Kirby High score, I added like 50 rerecords to make sure I was ending it on the very first frame. I then realized that Mupen took out the last two frames, so I had tp spend more rerecords to ensure that the movie ended on the third possible frame so that the movie would complete itself. And that should apply to any submission. a 2 second improvement of JXQ's run is good, especially for your first TAS. I definetly remember when you were so excited to start TASing Super Mario World in general, and were frustrated by coming up with inferior results compared to the published runs, and it's good to see that you've become familiar with the game enough to improve on a published run.

unfortunately no. They do not spawn until the platform is halfway to the other side, and at that time they are actually too far away for even something as precise as the TAS input plugin to aim at. I tried, and at distances that far sniping is impossible with the pistol. Plus, my guess is that since they are trigger door drones they won't die from one sniped head shot. And, most importantly, if I do catch the moving platform, I'm going to be busy deactivating the 2 cell door blocks before I jump to the other side, so I won't have time to snipe the drones.

I shoot the cell block opener way off in the distance because at the speed I was running to the platform, I wouldn't have made it in time, so I stop, walk backwards a bit, snipe the cell door block, then deactivate the last one underneath my feet while standing on mid-air, and wait for the platform to come around. When I redo and get to SS Anubis, I'm going to try and really push Juno's speed to kill the 3 drones (maybe leave some to suffer, because they'll die eventually so maybe I don't need to make them ghost immediatly) save the tribal, deactivate the first cell door block, and get the capacity upgrade. What's going to change is instead of shoot 3 drones, go back and get the cell door block, Tribal, and then ammo capacity, maybe 2 drones, cell block door, 3rd drone, tribal, capacity upgrade, and haul major ass to see if I can get to the platform in time. if I were to get to the platform in time, I'd turn around and shoot the cell door block that's behind and below me, then turn around and snipe the one above and to the right of the trigger door, then step off and kill the last 3 drones.
