PSXjin v2.0.1 Released, with better sync stability!

Most of them didn't like the death, not only for continue.
TMNT1 - Bosses get harder if you don't die. As opposed to an incentive to put money in, there is a disincentive to not die. I chose to not die in my run, for that reason. Cadash - Putting money in equals more health. No health management would be required, just keep buying it. Bionic Commando - new lives put you at the top of the screen. Mukki didn't use this, because the entire run would have been the player dying.

Why did you learn turbo for Quezacotl ? I mean the only place where (if I am not mistaking) we need to use a GF is the Granaldo fight, and Shiva is faster and give the same results. Moreover, you will learn the card ability with delay.
My original plan was to use Quezacotl to get the fish fins. However, the fact that you can get Card Mod right after Diablo, and that Quezacotl's animation takes forever, I probably won't use this.

Good luck with this. But don't forget that in the deck of cards, you can transform the Gayla card with Diablos' STMagRF ability into 10 Meltdown
Yeah, after seeing how easy it is to obtain strong cards, I may redo this.

This pretty much hits the nail on the head. You weren't the cause of the derailment, but time and time again, this is your typical mode of operation, starting a meta-discussion at every possible moment.

Do any NES games use any kind of noise to run it's RNG? I'm not familiar enough with the technical aspects of the NES to know if that is even possible as an RNG technique.
To answer this question, we need a lua function called memory.registerread( ) to compliment memory.registerwrite( ). Create a boolean table of all possible ram addresses, and flag every address on its first write, and check every address on read. If a read comes up with a false - the NES read from uninitialized memory.

X2poet, your objections to people disliking your use of continues have been noted. The way this video stands, quite a few people have voiced opinions against this movie, and against the use of continues in arcade games. This alone makes it hard to accept this movie. You can continue arguing your point, but it appears a large percentage of people dislike the use of death in metal slug games. The votes alone make it hard to judge this movie favorably.

I'm honestly getting really annoyed by your comments. Seemingly anybody else can post whatever they want, but if I dare to express any views whatsoever, it constitutes "arguing" and "derailing the thread". Whenever someone does start arguing, it's never their fault, it's always mine. Please explain to me why, for example, Derakon's post "that "verified no cheating" blurb in the SDA logo has always struck me as slightly indefensible...", which is what started this side-conversation, nor any of the other posts that were made as a response to it. constitute "derailing the thread", but when I dare to make a response about the subject, it immediately earns a "another thread being derailed by Warp" comment? Why exactly am I singled out and assigned exclusive blame for whatever "derailing" might have happened? I have to say that as an admin you are seriously lacking some diplomacy skills.
This is the 2nd time I've had to split that topic, with you being the most vocal party involved.

this isn't the first time I've seen this come up since the nesbot debuted. I'm not trying to start a sda vs tas fight especially since there's so much overlap and collaboration between the two, but it's business as usual over on our front. If anything people are excited to see if glitch X really works on console or if it's emulator only. Except maybe for andrewg who has/had runs on 4 out of the 5 games proven to work.
That "verified no cheating" blurb in the SDA logo has always struck me as slightly indefensible for the consoles with accurate TAS-capable emulators.
as far as this goes, it's possible that we might miss some stuff on more obscure games, but it's highly unlikely that the most contested runs would be able to dupe verifiers if some random guy shows up with perfect luck and execution. Maybe if you submit a crappy TAS with bad luck or some screwups, but why would you do that? That will show us? The verified no cheating thing is the same to me as "This movie is a tool-assisted run played on an emulator." It's just a shorter way of saying "This speedrun underwent peer review and to the best of our ability has been determined that it was played in realtime on the original unmodifed hardware (or official emulator such as Wii Virtual Console) with a standard controller. As far as carts that I own and will be eventually loaning to micro500, I've got: Blaster Master Castlevania 2 Castlevania 3 (tas uses J rom so will this sync?) Cobra Triangle Contra (tas uses J rom) Donkey Kong Donkey King Jr Dragon Warrior Faxanadu Goonies 2 Jackal Karnov Kid Icarus LoZ 1 (not needed) LoZ 2 (not needed) Lunar Pool (tas use J rom) Megaman 1-6 (mm1-3 use J rom) Paperboy Rush'n Attack SMB (not needed) Solstice Super C TMNT Wizards & Warriors 2 Ironsword I've been looking to expand my nes collection, so any suggestions? :D
dballin, I hope my post at SDA wasn't seen as negative - I was just trying to let them know about the possibility of cheating. I appreciate SDA, and would one day love to see the communities have more contact than just sharing members. I tried to clean up this thread as much as possible. Anyway, thank you for loaning micro500 games. This is a very exciting time for TASvideos. P.S. This thread is for talking about the device NESbot, what games sync, how the technology can be improved, i.e. the TECHNICAL ASPECTS of the NES Bot. This thread is NOT NOT NOT for debating the legitimacy of aspects of TASing, the effect this device will have on SDA, or any other debate worthy topic, or whether or not I'm over-modding this thread. Start a new thread if you want to raise these issues. I will continue to purge that stuff from this thread.

I noticed you continue hitting ifrit after "Hm! Not bad" message. I think ifrit doesn't attack after that, you wait more and then the battle ends. I could be wrong, it been a long time since I last played FF8.
He says that message once he falls below half-health. In my newer version, I prevent him from saying it by talking him from greater than half-health to zero in one round.

Here is my run, from about the point you gain 'real' control. I saved about ~20 seconds in the new Ifrit battle. If you are an FF8 aficionado, you might notice something missing from the Ifrit battle. Link to video I skip getting the deck of cards. I hope to minimize the amount of card playing I have to do, and I hope I can get a decent hand just from random/forced drops. I use both the stutter walk trick and the menu trick to reduce the number of random encounters by 1, and I exit the fire cave at step ID 63.08. Also, the next encounter is based on when you leave a message box or menu. So, I delay a menu to get the fastest run-away that I can. It is possible to prevent Ifrit from his "I underestimated you humans" speech, by dropping him to above half-health, and then finishing him off between his turns. Also, before the final Renzokuken, you will see me wait while manipulating - this was to manipulate Ifrit to do nothing for 1 turn, so I could do both attacks between. Also, Rough Divide can critical! Also, the Run-trick (discovered by Carcinogen) helps save time - You attempt to run right before starting a limit break, or recovering from an attack. This prevents preparation animations.

Isn't it faster to attack with Squall before Quistis at the start of the fight, because of the critical hit animation when Quistis attack Squall ?
Good point. I cleaned this up by using the run trick.

Well, since no one could get the Ifrit battle to sync, here it is. I still have to redo it, because it doesn't sync unless I use a savestate. Link to video

Here is my first WIP: http://sites.google.com/site/darkkobold/FF8diskStandard.pjm?attredirects=0&d=1 I could really use some help from people, testing this. Unfortunately, when I play it back, it desyncs very inconsistently. Some times when Quitus tells Squall he forgot his GF, some times when Squall tries to execute a Gunblade maneuver, and finally, the 3rd is when I walk to the Fausticon-Fs, there is an unintended battle. I get one less encounter in the Fire Cave than mz and darkwasabi, due to frame precision of the walking trick. I've got a script that aids me in holding "walk" (triangle) for one frame. This only costs me approximately 1.5 steps. Anyway, please let me know if you can get it to sync or not. I'd also appreciate an encode from anyone able to get to sync, as I'm pretty happy/amazed at how well the Ifrit battle turned out.

is there a way for this emulator to have proper turbo mode? it is very slow with pcsx, turbo mode was fast, and this allowed me to jump to anywhere in my 3 hours ff7 run without any desyncs. i tried ticking 'frame skipping' in psxjin gfx plugin but it seems to disobey me. i also need turbo mode for my lua scripts, as otherwise it will be too slow. i have tested it and it never caused desyncs or errors (compared 65536 ram address outputs with + without turbo mode)
I believe the speed decrease is due to the GPU being ported to C++. I had a similar issue with slow down after that. However, the trade-off of a more integrated and stable GPU is worth it. Granted, I also upgraded my computer during the dev of PSXjin, and turbo is sufficiently fast for me.

This is has convinced me that this is just a debug code, and not a glitch. Thanks for doing this work, Gunty.

As far as I know, you can import the pxm to taseditor (http://code.google.com/p/pcsxrr/downloads/list). Also I couldn't find any difference between pjm and pxm (http://code.google.com/p/psxjin/wiki/PJM and http://code.google.com/p/pcsxrr/wiki/pxmFileFormat) except the first 3 bytes.
That page is sorely out of date, however, you are correct - backwards compatibility was maintained by simply switching those 3 bytes. Warning, do not use ChangeAuthor with movies converted from PXM.

I found this page, which is the discovery. http://m2k2.taigaforum.com/post/glitch_topic_716.html#glitch_topic_716 It looks like a debug code that was left in. I guess it comes down to the question of: Is this like Earthbound, which allows accessing debug features? Or is this simply a cheat code that was unknown till now? My perspective is that Earthbound used a glitch to access the debug feature - This, on the other hand, uses a code that was left in by developers who assumed no one would find it. And finally, which any% would this obsolete? The XRay movie is faster, by a large margin. This uses a glitch/code, which sorta goes against the other any% movie. I'm open to suggestions and conversation on these ideas.
