Interesting movie about where money comes from.
Interesting. The first half I agree with. Allowing banks to create money through the fractional reserve system is foolish. Banks should only be allowed to loan the amount of money lent equal to the amount deposited. However, once it goes into about 20 minutes in, it becomes a bunch of communistic crap. Yes, let gov't handle the flow of money, since gov't is less corrupt than banks. That has always worked well in the past. Also, interest free loans? Yes, I can just see the future of that. Loans can be charged interest to offset the risks involved. None of these are a problem. Even interest can be offset by increased production of an economy. Finally, vouchers equal to work time? Once again, communism doesn't work. An hour of a doctor's time is not equal to that of a hard laborer.

I gave it a yes vote. Good good video, but it seems you got lazy after the first survival part.

I was really, really hoping to vote yes on this, especially since we have a thread bitching that there are no new games. However, this game was horrid. The music repetition drove me insane... and there is no boss. You walk right through countless retarded enemies (which in and of itself is an achievement) and then the game says End. It was sorta painful... to sit through. I promised myself I wouldn't fast forward. That lasted 5 minutes. Seriously, did someone actually play this game and go "This is an accurate representation of a classic piece of English Literature and is fun to play?" My guess is no. Not voting. I can't vote no in good faith.

All the LOLcat rip offs have been exceedingly lame, except for maybe the LOLbukkit walrus. LOLsmash, is however, no exception. I understand a lot of people are excited for this game... but this isn't funny.

I don't think it worth it. It's extremely long. I fought this battle once, using low-leveled charater and you hit about 1 every round. So it would take almost 200 turns to kill Lemon, which is very very very [...] long.
Oh, the plan isn't to Kill Lemon, it's to get the evil shot, enter the battle, and egress back to the castle, like the WIP. I get the evil shot, demonstrate glitchy behaviour, and move on with the game normally.

I'll try to look in details to the WIP you provided. To be sure you didn't miss something (like the Mitril that is right up when you go down the hole in the jail. There's another one before the crash of the boat.
There is also a mithril behind the tower. ATM, I'm avoiding Mithril, as I doubt I will get the dry stone, or enter the dwarf village. Time consuming, when I will most likely pick up enough strong weapons.

It might be better than getting the evil shot, and I don't think that the Evil shot would save much time. Getting the fact that you have you need three character and you need to finish the battle too. And Elric is slow as hell. I don't know if power water really worth the lost frame (you can find one in the temple where you find the sword of light).
At this point, I'm not sure if any of the Power items are worth it. However, many of my characters are so weak, it's somewhat pathetic.

The game forces me to get so many characters, as it stands, so I am going to avoid any optional characters.

I dunno. I've never played the game past battle 8. I'm also hoping, for effect, I will be able to leave Creed's, and take no one.

DarkKobold: Yes. I used to spend some time every now and then looking at the lesser-known TASes and commenting on them, but recently I've stopped. A lot of it was due to Gens (DO NOT CHANGE MY SCREEN SETTINGS!*@!@*), as well as the difficulty of running GBA games I had.
This wasn't a comment directed at you, more the community in general. It seems if the main character isn't Sonic, Samus, Mario, or Link, the run gets 10% of the attention. It isn't anyone's fault. Popular games make for popular TASes. No one can change that. A run of a game you've never played is going to be pretty boring, even with amazing glitches and precision. In reality, (no offense to the authors) the Super Mario 3 video is not astoundingly amazingly better than any other run on this site. Its just the most popular game. (It is astounding and amazing, don't get me wrong, but so are many TASes here)

I can't create a poll here, but I think that some might just like seeing Battle 37 start between battles 6 and 7. It would be a 'sacrifices time for glitch demonstration', which I am a known outspoken critic of (that can be done in real-time). I'd like to get a poll of opinions though, because this run is more for everyone else than for me. I've stated numerous times how much I dislike this game :) Atma: If I pick up the 2 mithrils available, I could afford a strong weapon by selling them. At this point, I have zero intention of having any mithril weapons crafted. Also, I've used Game Genie codes to beat the battle between Sheela and the glitch, and... she isn't in the hidden temple. Something must have to happen for her to trigger. ZeXr0: I think there may be a skip-able battle, I'm keeping up hope. You can get the blizzard ball in that one village. Is it reusable? Also, what is your feeling on demonstrating the glitch for entertainment? I love this screen shot:

And how exactly are they going to find those? Write "supermario" in the search field and you get 0 results. Fix it to "super mario" (assuming this occurs to the newcomer) and you get a bunch of results which have nothing to do with the super mario movies: The first results are "Super Mario Kart Luck", "Super Mario 64 Tricks", "Super Mario Land Tricks", "Super Mario Bros Tricks", "Super Mario Kart Physics", "Super Mario World Tricks" and "Super Mario Bros 2 Tricks". Judging from this it almost looks like this site isn't about movies at all, but more like a wiki where people write about tricks in old console games. (I have told Bisqwit more than once that he should implement a priority system to the search: Movies first, then wiki pages, then submissions, but he has never done so. Maybe also implement some kind of dictionary system, so if the user writes, for example, "supermario", the search engine automatically searches for "super mario" as well.) Ok, maybe the newcomer will click the NES/Famicom link in the front page (we assume that *everyone* knows what those names mean, which might actually not always be the case): He gets a page with something like 200 items, which takes like an hour to load. Not very encouraging, I would say. I simply can't understand what is wrong with a short, concise list of "best of the show" movies for newcomers to try. It makes it a lot easier to get into the site, so to speak.
I'm not totally against that, and you are right, a newbie isn't going to find those movies easily. Good improvement. However, perhaps a 'Runs for Popular games' would stop some of the infighting on the site. Perhaps a link that calls up all sonic, mario, link, and samus games would be appropriate. Those runs are obviously the most popular games on the site.

I don't want me to be advertised (at least not on this site), because I'm not really special. That said, I apologize for neglecting this thread for some time. In any case, I'll remove the stars temporarily (as in, indefinitely until something different comes up), as they have not been verified for some time and there may be discrepancies in them that I am not able to off-hand justify.
Good call. Plus, most stars were for popular runs to begin with. Do we really need to tell people to watch a super mario 3 run, or Mario 64? That is the first place a new person is going to go anyway!

Yeah, even if the manipulation were as good as SF1, and I could beat Lemon, I'd fight Geshp outside the castle, then the 2 headed dragon, and be essentially 'stuck' completing the game in the normal way. I don't know what triggers the gate of Galam opening, or the shrine opening. Unless I desperately want the evil shot or the best buyable sword in the game, either glitch is simply for amusement, and to piss me off.

Glitch abuse 1. We see two sides of Lemon. He's dead, he's alive... he's Schrödinger's cat. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1718544150/2sidesofLemon.gmv Glitch abuse 2. This is pretty huge. If you look at the length of a metroid, mario, link, or sonic thread... they dominate any other thread. Then yours, on a game you may be working equally hard at, gets 3 views in 1 day, and a post every week... is disheartening. Popular game = popular TAS. No one can do anything about that. Emotional reasons aside, its difficult to work on a run if the first and only time you get input is when you submit it for publication. Additionally, if a video is on the line of being publish-worthy, do you spend 6 months on it, for it to get rejected as boring? Theenglishman seemed like he had to beg to get people to watch his PofP video WIP.

The battle that everyone has been waiting for, but didn't know it yet. Probably going to be one of the better battles of the run. Has the very WTF makings of a TAS. This battle should make up for everyone sitting through hundreds of variations of SF1. Battle 5 Also, I'd suggest that everyone who watches these make a save state after battle 5. I'm going to be posting a few variations of battle 6 which are not really TASes, just glitch demos.

Thanks pirate_sephiroth, but I went with Hal's method already. I've almost completed this game I think, but I got a cool idea for a challenge so I started it already before actually finishing. The challenge is to see how far you can get without ever gaining exp from random battles that you can run away from. Since the bosses give you so much exp, it might be possible to get very far. It is basically a standard low level game except your levels really won't be all that low (although as low as possible). It would seem easy compared to games like final fantasy 6 low level game where bosses tend not to give any exp (so you can stay as low as lvl 6), but in that game there are lots of ways to avoid enemy damage, whereas in this game there don't seem to be many besides physical/magical shield which is only 1/2. Anyways I so far I am only up through Farin Base, which means I have only killed 2 things so far, my levels are 8,10,12. Wondering if anyone else would like to attempt this too or if anyone is interested in hearing how it goes.
I'm really curious if you will be able to do this. The boss battles were ridiculously hard...

Absolutely amazing run. Hilarious explanation text. Obvious yes vote. Also, the reason this game (probably) didn't do better was that it didn't have battery save. I actually had this game, and rarely played it, due to the obnoxious password system, that would occasionally give a faulty password. Minor misspelling:

So, being the MATLAB dork I am, I took Bisqwit's data and ran it through a couple low-pass filters to determine trends.

Wow, actually, if you mentally plot a trendline, the number of publications of new stuff is a slowly decaying polynomial, whereas the number of of obsoleting publications seems to actually stay fairly constant. Bisqwit, is there anyway I could get the month-to-month data in an excel or binary format? (Sorry, last request :) )

Edit: Oh, right, nobody takes me seriously anymore. Oops. It wouldn't suprise me if it was somehow related to the proliferation of memory watch utilities/users. Those indirectly cause a requirement for more precision, which takes more time. I would imagine a similar (although much less powerful) effect happened when FCEU became usable with frame-advance. As the "required quality" rises, the "acceptable publish level" also rises; this means that new people need to have more knowledge of game mechanics and memory watch tools, which makes "getting into it" more difficult, which results in less people attempting it with any hope of a published movie. In short: The bar for newcomers has been raised too high, meaning that mostly veterans are TASing; combine this with a lack of wanting to work on "lesser-known" games and you end up with a rapidly dwindling supply of new games to work on. This is just my idea, though, but from sitting back and observing it seems to make sense.
No, I think you are spot on. I think your second point, which really wasn't a summation of the first is the most disheartening part of this evolution. There are some who think introduction of new consoles will help. The problem is, its a shape up or ship out kind of mentality, which isn't newbie friendly. As older folks leave, there really won't be a crop of ready newbies to take their place.

To solve the question of 'what happened', it may be interesting to see the derivative of this graph, and determine when actual changes occurred. For example, what happened in 7/2004 that massively slowed the number of new movies being posted? When exactly did the number of obsoleting movies start to increase? Good ol' math.

Which is actually why I said ten. Ten years ago, PS1 emulation was about where PS2 emulation is right now.
Really though, TASing didn't really exist 10 years ago. TASing (consoles) is really only a little older than this site. From the interviews I read, Bisq started this site pretty much right after the '1st' console run, Morimoto's SMB3. So, the majority of TAS tools have occurred either from this site, or influence from this site. Also, as an aside, TASing relies less on achieving a frame rate than actually playing a game does. Since we are usually playing 1 frame at a time anyway, and movie-to-AVI can go at 300 frames per second or 1 frame per second, it just doesn't matter. Once the video is in AVI format, it will seem real-time, regardless of how fast or slow it was encoded.
