Maybe DarkKobold never noticed that. Sorry, my bad. Ignore this thread.

Oh, and the reason for lack of progress is that I am absolutely DREADING battle 20. If you watched the last one, I ended up taking 3 attacks, and the high priest went running away :( It is a retardedly hard battle to optimize, and no monster dying ends the battle.

What decision? Tell me MOAR buddy. (Do you mean not killing Bleu?) And gmv:s even after one battle advancement could make our days nicer. I've begun to wait these already as much as Claymore subs.
There really hasn't been much progress. I've now redone the to Dragonia battle and the Kane-Cain Battle. Your technique saved an entire 67 seconds off my second attempt at to Dragonia. Somehow, I also managed to shave another entire minute off killing Kane. He now dies at 1:28, as oppose to 1:30, which I guess is kinda cool. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/697013469/Shining%20Force%20%28U%29%20%5B%21%5D.gmv Oh, and the big question is who gets the turbo pepper. I thought that the way to approach the "to Runefaust" battle was to give max the turbo pepper and the mobility ring, and make a mad dash for the gate. This would be slow, since his move would only be 10, and hindered by trees. Giving the turbo pepper to a flyer now means that I can have a move of 11, unhindered by anything.

I realize that the submission text is the personal choice of the author, however I've recently become irritated and annoyed with certain texts. Mainly, the biggest problem I see is when a new run is submitted, and an old one is obsoleted, lots of important information is buried in "obsoleted submissions." I often find myself watching a video, and saying "I want to know how they did that!" to find the submission text says: "saved 4 frames on last boss by pressing down instead of up." And then trying to trace back to the first submission to learn the tricks, by going back through 10 obsoleted submissions. I propose that any video that obsoletes a previous run, automatically have the previous submission text included. Or, perhaps a page devoted simply to a hierarchy of submission texts, with most recent being first. This is mainly just an annoyance, because it takes so many clicks/loads to trace back through a game's history.

Warp is exactly right. If you want to press 56 Keys at once, get yourself one of these: http://www.ultimarc.com/ipac1.html or http://groovygamegear.com/webstore/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=76_80&products_id=199 These are from DIY arcade builders, btw.

Speedruns (tool-assisted or not) are often not a good way to see a complete walkthrough of a game. Many regular speedruns skip entire sections of the game too (the Quake, Half-Life and Half-Life 2 speedruns being excellent examples). The only difference with tool-assisted ones is that we try to find the absolute extreme minimal completion time without the limits imposed by human imperfection. That's one of the basic goals of TASes: How fast could the game be completed if it human imperfection was not a limiting factor? Regular speedruns are awesome shows of skill, and they are really admirable in that category. However, TASes do not and don't even attempt to show skills. They just attempt to show what would happen if the human factor was removed completely.
I just have to say, this is a very elegant way of saying it.

Congrats upthorn, you are very very strong. LOL Yes vote. 2 comments: In the first swimming level, at about 4:15 ish, you do one zip up, and then wait. Could the zip have come later to get over the middle piece? Second: was zipping disabled for the flashy things with the moving lift? You stay on the platform the entire time, which is out of place in this ADHD movie. Also, I thought I remember this movie ending at 26, not 27 min.

At 2:28, you jump backwards (I'm guessing that the rocket is refilling, but you also lose some downward screen movement.... Is it possible to lose life to stop the life counter at the end? It's not long, and if it looks like crap, it isn't worh doing.

After the run is complete we see if Legs of Haste or Mobility ring would have been needed. Impossible to say yet, right.
Actually, the mobility ring has been used for every single battle since it was obtained. It shortens chapter 5 battle 2 by an entire round. It's quick, but Amon gets it from max, and equips it right away. The Legs of Haste, I don't want to even THINK about. Here is essentially why: If a battle has, say, 20 enemies, there are 2.4*10^18 different possible orders. However, the randomization function can only produce 65535 different battle orders. This randomization is biased by the agility of every person in battle. Therefore, a battle order that would be most beneficial for speed may exist with 1 characters agility, may completely disappear if that characters agility changes. Additionally, while a change in agility might speed up one battle, it may cause massive lag in another battle 2 chapters apart. thus, agility is probably the single most important statistic (aside from a character's fixed move). To really maximize the speed of this run, a person would need to do each battle for each different set of possible character's agility, record the results, and pick the sequence that was the fastest. Additionally, speed can change in a battle, sometimes by massive amounts, adding a retarded level of complexity. Also remember, each battle takes 2-5 hours to do, so it would take literally YEARS to absolutely perfect this run.

So you are saying that each character has a target set of stats for each level, and the actual stats may never be more than a certain variance away from the target stats. Does this mean that it ultimately makes no difference at what level you promote? That a character promoted closer to level 20 will subsequently get smaller gains because his post-promotion level 1 stats are higher? Incidentally this would contradict all the faqs, which say you end up with better stats by promoting later. (Gamefaqs writers aren't exactly known for sound methodology and fact checking.)
Actually, they are correct, but no one has a true understanding as to the why. Funny enough, I just finished this part of the code. So, post promotion, 2 things effect your stats. The first being the fixed statistics table for post promotion, levels 1 - 20. This is added to a value from the first table, which is 85% of the actual value. So, still, statistics are fixed. You get 85% of your level's FIXED statistics pre-promotion, and then the additional "promotion bonus table"

DarkKobold, you can create a google webpage, there's 100megs of storage there. in the first battle of chapter 6, I didn't see what you gave to max, but if it's a ring, isn't it faster to equip him just before a battle ? Wouldn't it be faster to exchange item in the menu before the battle, because you seems to stay still and lose turn.
Actually, I've only tested this in real-time, but the menus are really obnoxious, because it has to bring up a text box "Who's item do you want to give" and then display the character portrait, and the characters items. Finally, you select the item, and it says "Who do you want to give the _ _ _ _ _ _ ring to?" Re-brings up the character menu, which you have to page through, and etc. I've purposely put in the battle order, such as in the 2nd fight of chapter 5, max goes before Amon, to give the ring, so I can avoid the massively long menus outside of battle. Currently, I need to re-do the end of battle 18, so I can avoid having to bring up the menu. Honestly though, I haven't compared how many frames it is exactly to transfer an item in battle vs. in a town. I have only assumed many more.
ZeXr0 wrote:
Also wouldn't it be fast to group people together and move them ? I don't know how faster is the cursor, but it might be faster to move the group toward the battle.
I think it may be diminishing returns to continue to move the Knights towards the battle, since they essentially get completely stopped by the woods. Moving Gort takes a few extra frames than the cursor. However when you add the 3 times it takes to move the cursor to him, it may make it faster by a few frames. I really should test this.... doh.

Yeah, it desyncs/stops. I forgot to stop the recording before I started messing around in the Kane battle. Additionally, if it didn't Desync, it would have ended with Balbory hitting Kane for 50 damage... not enough to kill him.

Well if Bleu suck, then you can't rely on him thus making Amon and Balbaroy very important. Buying weapon is not a concern, unless you can't take an enemy with a double hit. Are there any battle that requires the two bird until you can promote one and give him a better sword ?
Actually, it's funny you mention that. Next battle is the battle I've been dreading the most, since I started the TAS. It is AWFUL. At this point, I have no idea how to tackle it, since The enemies are spread, in mountains, and are very difficult to take down, even for my birds. The knights will be extremely usesless, as are max and Gort. Take a look at it on GameFAQs.

For promotion, I don't know what are the consequence of promoting early or late, and you'll lose time if you split the promoting in two parts. I would say (if time wasn't a concern) to promote only those that could be upgrade with a better weapon doing more damage (if they can't take enemies in one turn.)
The other problem is the drop in agility. Everyone takes a hit of 4 or 5. If they all take it at once, it is easier to keep them together in the battle order. If they are all over the map, then the cursor is more likely to have to play jumping jacks for 1 or more fights, until everyone can level once or more. Sorry, forgot this: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/9828213/Shining%20Force%20%28U%29%20%5B%21%5D.gmv The reason the 2 most recent battles are amazing (to me) Battle 17: 4 shellfish appear as soon as the bottom 4 conchs move. Strangely, they never appear :). (Seriously, however, getting the conchs to never move was a horrendous pain in the ass. That is why there is some standing around) Battle 18: 2 Ice Worms, 1 Master Mage, and 5 Golems should appear on this map.... I'll let you see what happens.

Actually, I got a little done on my vacation. 2 beautiful battles if I do say so myself. Unfortunately, I'm also very angry, because I completely need to re-do the Kane (Cain) battle. I need some advice as well. Bleu sucks hardcore, for a flying player. His attack is great, but his move is only 5 (!!!! F-Bomb !!!!) and his agility is 8, which makes him impossible to manipulate in the battle order. I'm thinking he needs to die, and soon. Also, Pelle promoted, equipped with the Halberd, boosted with the power ring, is the only one capable of taking on Kane in one shot. This is easily on the path to the fight. The question is, is it time to promote everyone? I know I may have to hold off on Amon or Balb, since the broad sword is available, but only 1. (I could buy a steel sword, but it is weak) Additionally, the Valkyrie (Strong Knight weapon) is also coming soon, making buying the chrome lance a time wasting proposition. Too much to think about!!!!

The power ring is useless on Amon because he didn't get to attack on the second battle of chapter 3. (While he is boosted)
Luckily, there is a nice little bug in the game. The power ring boost last indefinitely past the "BOOST has ended" message, until something actually takes effect on the character. This includes level-ups, getting hit (misses don't count) or status change, sleep, muddle, etc.

Shouldn't Gort be equipped with the Heat Axe as soon as possible ? Unless he can't before promotion ?
You've got it. However, I think I promote Max waaaay too early, since he becomes a weakling, and mostly useless.

The problem with buying a new weapon at this point is that the dialog, the screens, and etc take way more than the 6 seconds it takes to boost with the power ring. Additionally, everyone but the Birds are able to double hit kill every creature on the map at this point

VANDAL, don't take this wrong way, but I think the movie tries to be "too much." From movie guidelines: Do not impose artificial restrictions on the run. Such as "I will use all weapons except this one", "I will go for both highscore and fast time" (how should we compare that run to a future one?), or "I wont jump except where it's necessary". Right now, the movie is: "I will go for all but one of the hidden characters, complete the game with all flawless victories except two player battles, show of all glitched fatalities, except when I want to show a normal one, and complete in the fastest time except for all the extra fights." The movie is great, but the majority of the comments are because the movie lacks focus. Someone says you didn't go for enough hidden characters, another says you shouldn't go for any. One person says You didn't show enough glitched fatalities, another says you showed too many. I have my personal preferences of what you should be shown, but because there are no definitive goals, all the judging has been purely opinion based. You've unfortunately left a lot of room for criticism due to not setting defined goals. My idea is that if you want to do a 100% run in fastest time, do that. No fatalities, just pure speed and great combos. If you want to do a glitched fatality run, do that. Crash the damn game with the last fatality. Don't make the fights interesting at all, morph into Johnny Cage at the start of every fight, kill the opponent in a quick repetitive manner (less time waiting to transform back), than demonstrate an entertaining fatality.

I really like this video, and the concept of a glitch run. However, the 3 round 2 player fights were completely pointless. They could have shown enough in 2 rounds. Additionally, the best part of those is the fatalities, so getting to them quicker would be better. LOVED The rayden screen glitch. Can you do the Baraka through the wall trick without destroying the game?

Chiming in late in the game here, so please excuse any ignorance. Would it be possible to make the goal of a glitch run to not be speed, but absolute ridiculous entertainment? I imagine that it would be highly entertaining to see a run where the most ridiculous bugs are used. (Like Mortal Kombat II run) For example, go straight to smitty, get the master sword. Go to death mountain, and warp into the dark world as the bunny. Go fail against Gannon as super bunny. Bunny Link dies. Get the silver arrows, fire rod, and final sword. Go get zelda from the first part of the game. Have her follow you into Gannon's final chamber. If she were there for the final fight, it would be ridiculously funny. "Zelda, I'll save you!" " I'm ... right... here."

Holding Shift+# selects the save spot at the same time as saving the spot, causing the text to overlap. (PLEASE don't eliminate Shift to save, Ctrl to load. It is a life saver to have the extra required key) Annoyances: Pressing C in the Ram Watch window clears all watches. If you have C set as the C button on the controller, this leads to having to reload, or possibly losing newly found ram locations. The GameGenie area has a misspelling. It says Desactive all codes. Desactive is an interesting new word. (Hopefully the new cheat system will eliminate the need for Game Genie section)
