A little back story: This game was bought for me by my parents back in the day. They weren't rich by any means, so I was just happy to get a game. And then, it turned out to be this stinker. I could never play it for very long, since it was just so craptacular. This always left me feeling guilty that my parents had spent hard earned money to buy me a little happiness, and here it was, boring, irritating, and foolish. For example: In this time attack, I never jump spikes. Why? Being stopping by damage requires 3 frames. Any jump takes 7 frames from button press to when the player starts moving again. Whenever you take damage, you are pushed in the direction the damage is coming from. While Jumping takes 7 frames, most enemies take multiple shots to kill, and taking a shot takes FOREVER. Therefore, most enemies are jumped, but then the damage taken pushes me forward a few quicker steps. Makes the run look sloppy in my opinion. I decided to post my WIP, since I have to start over. Main question: Is it worth TASing this game? The final video is estimated to be just under 15 minutes. But, it is a boring, repetitive 15 minutes. The only glitch I found is that L+R = moonwalking, which is used to make the video slightly more enjoyable. The biggest problem is when I go for the laser. While the strongest weapon in the game, it is absolutely useless against the only enemies I kill, the bosses. All of them fly or lean forward, which means they get hit by the fireball first anyway, making the laser part of the weapon Extremely useless. Comments are appreciated. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/5584/MAINDK_Dynowarz.fcm

Chiming in to say Good Job! I like how you really cleaned up my flying trick. In truth, I never actually figured out how it worked. A lot of rerecords were spent trying to figure it out, I just did a strange button combination and it seemed to work. Also, your 2 over the wall shortcuts were fun and frustrating, since I never saw them myself :( Much cleaner than my video ever was.

Add what subtitles? Adding them is not hard (although they still need to be timed), but writing them is another story.
Err, not so much subtitles, more like, story indicators. Just a line or two every time a big scene comes up. Yeah, writting them would be a pain in the ass, because you'd actually have to know the story well enough to make them interesting. Plus, like every final fantasy game, there are the story arcs no one gives a crap about.

Bisqwit: How hard is it to add the subtitles? 90% of the time, through the FF6 run, the text moves too fast to read anyway. With Subtitles explaining the plot, the need to actually see the text disappears. The only difficulty is that the subtitles can't be incorporated into the SMV file.

Some of you may remember Yeoj and I's run from the Winter season. It was un-published, mainly due to crappy town walking and crappy text-advancing. We decided to redo the entire game, start to finish. Here is a list of improvements, as far as we have gotten. Level 1: Without tripple sandals, barrels can not be jumped. However, barrel corners can be jumped. This is now abused. It is faster to jump at an angle in towns then it is to walk at an angle. Jumping at an angle moves at the same speed of walking in a straight line. This is abused as well. The ghost woman is now hit be 2 plates simultaneously. This saves a few frames of flashing red. Level 2: Better town planning, angle jumping, etc. Lantern man is now abused with the double hit. Additionally, we improved on him, by forcing him to not jump. This battle is the shortest we've achieved, coming in at 11.5 seconds. It's worth watching this battle in slow motion, just to tell what is going on. Level 3: Better town planning, angle jumping, etc. Lottery is manipulated much faster. Level 4: Better town planning, angle jumping, etc. We utilize the double jump for a better angle in the last room. Double jumping now is only used at the last moment, speeding up jumps. 1st set of bosses is defeated much faster, by utilizing the delay in command-to-excution time. Level 5: Better town planning, angle jumping, etc. Tried to append our last video to the end of this video.... Something in the RNG said no, and a previously non-existant enemy appeared. enjoy

I can't believe it was desyncing. I have an older version of the rom set, that hasn't been updated by GOODSNES. That really sucks. Also, remember that dashing requires about 5 frames of pausing to rev up. Therefore, to use the extra dash power wastes more time than the jump attack. I'll re-do it, and probably try to get hampton moving quicker.

I'll assume this means the video hasn't been flagged for publishing.

I'd be the first to admit this movie is much better than mine and deserves to be published. The two players at once makes it far more entertaining, and the boss fights are astounding.
Yeah, we loved them, at least, after they were done.

Using death to save time is something you can't do in a one player run. I also didn't realize you could jump while you were climbing a ladder. Oops :) That said, Boco is right that there are some slight improvements that could be made. The text scrolling mistake in level 2 is very noticable, and there were a couple other places where it could have been very slightly improved. Of course I also know that getting the text scrolling just right can be rather difficult because of how it works in this game (you have to hold the button, then release and hold again at just the right spot). I also noticed you clipped objects a few times walking through towns (of course it's been a while since I watched my movie so I might have some of that too). Are you sure playing the lottery is faster?
100% sure. You play the dice game 3 times. You would only have needed to play the lottery once. The lottery isn't too far off the beaten path. Additionally, the time you take to rack up the money takes quite a bit of time. I loved your video the first time, but the dice over the lottery made me cringe. (Nintendo Power love: If you have the real game, and want to beat it, go to the lottery and put it on turbo b. As long as you start with 500 or so gold, you will be infinitely rich, eventually... just the way the probability works out)

Anyway. Good work guys. Glad to see I'm not the only fan of Goemon out there :)
Thank you!!! Oh, man, I loved this game. I had originally planned to do a 1 player run, until your version came out, and I thought it was unbeatable. I was crushed. So, I asked Yeoj to join in... I figured the only gain would be the latern man fight. Didn't expect the double hit, the suicidal double jump, etc.

This was one of Yeoj's favorite parts. :) We both loved the first double jump to get over the dropping spikes.

Both of these things happen QUITE a lot. Even normal text advancing isn't done in some places (meeting Koban Cat after killing the lantern guy).
It's not that we didn't do any text advance... we just did the (admittedly) wrong text advance (pressing B every other frame). We learned that 2 player helped the most, holding B on one and then rapid B on the other, was even FASTER than holding B in single player.
Boco wrote:
Route improvements in-town to avoid moving so much out of the way would save a lot. Since the times for the two lantern guy fights are different, one is neccessarily slower.
Yeah, we admittedly hurried through the town scenes. A few times, the person not in the lead could have killed more, to make more room. Also, figured out that the diaganol jump worked... in the last level...
Boco wrote:
There was also at least one point in which I thought a suicidal piggyback jump would have sped things up (and you have enough spare lives to do that twice - I don't remember if dying resets your power or your sandals, but still).
I'd love to know where! I was surprised with the number of things I found out about my fav. Super Nintendo game in making this speedrun.
Boco wrote:
Maybe I could find more specific points if I paid more attention and tested things myself.. as it is there's at least a few seconds of improvement and I honestly think a minute of improvement without major route changes is just on the edge of possible (I could of course be wrong).
I agree that time could be taken off... perhaps 30 seconds... not much more. The text wasn't HORRIBLE... the towns were the worst part.

It's still a great movie, very entertaining, etc.
Thanks, we both enjoyed making it!

Nice! I like this game (and series), and I like the use of two characters (one killing enemies while the other advances). However, there were many parts I thought were improvable. What I saw would only save a few seconds total I think, maybe a minute tops, but it was there. So I don't know what to vote. It's well done, but there are mistakes even I can spot? BTW the anime was made after the game series.
Boco: I'd like to know where you think it could be improved. A few things we found out later in the speed run: The text goes fastest if one player holds B while the other presses rapidly. Additionally, any time you walk diaganol in a town, it slows you down. Any large diagonal needs to be a jump, since the jump doesn't slow you down. Other things that may have looked like a mistake: In the last level, we both jump on the second to last ladder. That is to put the cloud into position. We tried 20 some times to do it without that, and it just wouldn't sync up right. Anything else you saw would be very interesting....

I think you can mix the two. For example, someone is working on a super ghouls and ghosts run. I think the run would be highly more entertaining, but perhaps slightly slower, if they only killed the necessary enemies. Slowing down slightly to reach other goals may be actually more entertaining, much like the Street Fighter Videos.

Just watched this. Great... Your skills at entertaining are great. Every thief trial was done with the highest amount of entertainment, I found myself chuckling a few times at your skill. I played the other W&W. I wish you would have detailed what you skipped, and how you skipped it. At least, please do for my edification.

Ok, lets deconstruct your argument. First, you address the downloader. They have more harddrive space? Agreed. More bandwidth? Possibly. Pretentious enough to not be able handle something as simple as split files? For the most part, hopefully no. You are forgetting a major factor. The person hosting the files. They do not have infinite bandwidth. Nor do they have infinite hard drive space. Uploads are capped by most high bandwidth service providers. So have it hosted you say? And who is going to front that bill? Are you, in your vast generousity going to fork over 10 bucks a month for these 2 gb videos? Most small time run sites are done out of the pockets and the paitence of those who run them. They are usually dedicated and generous people. Perhaps you should be a little more thankful, instead of blasting these people with your logically flawed arguments. Perhaps if you want 2 gb videos distributed, you should start your own site. I look forward to visiting it. Until then, bow gracefully in thanks, and keep your trap shut.

The genesis sold better than the SNES? That is quite the claim. Have any data to back it up? Not calling you out, just curious. Sorry for turning this into a SF debate. It is more a discussion versus output debate. It seems like the percentage of movies versus registered and regularly posting users is low. Think about a sports forum. 90% of the people who discuss them are fat slow and unathletic, and have no actual attachment other then where they live to a sports team. They contribute 0% and talk 100%. Seems like this board is 75% contribution and 25% talk. In honesty, that is probably a really good thing. New runs all the time.... But at the same time, if people don't discuss the movies, possible optimization might never occur. I learned from Zurreco that I could freeze in air, which led me to find that I could actually fly upwards, therefore shortening some levels a considerable amount. Plus, it is fun to read. :p

And in the last half hour, only one message was posted in the SNES forum, and around 10 in the general. Heck, this post got 4 or so... As far as shinning force... If people can do Final Fantasy and make it interesting, then I sure hope I can make sf interesting. Besides, it would be cool to only hit the absolutely necessary creatures, and end all battles ASAP. Just an observation.

This I believe is a first. A forum in which the actual output from the forum is much more active then the actual forum itself. It seems that very little discussion of videos occurs. For example, I posted an early speed run of Shining Force 1 (arguably one of the best Genesis games ever) and it only got one comment. I watched for a few days, and it stayed at the top of the forum however!!! I am not trying to bolster my run, or whine. I am just curious as to why so little discussion of speedruns occur, and yet new speed runs are being submitted every day? Is it the competition that drives people to secrecy? (After I had posted it, I was obviously excited and awaiting comments, so I was checking rather regularly. It seemed *all* boards where rather slow.)

prower, I do hope you realize, that at 500,000 frames per second, that would take approx~2.44 x 10^4336 centuries? That would be interesting. You could rule out select though, it doesn't do anything....

Oh, I almost forgot, you must not have an SRM file for the Shining Force rom before you load the movie. Back this file up, i.e. move it or rename it. The movie can't play unless this file is created anew.

If you've tried anything with this game, you will quickly realize that luck maniuplation.... Doesn't work In battle, it doesn't matter what frame you attack on, you always deal the same damage. No Dragon Warrior-esqe manipulation here.
