this is a rather good idea. as Genisto mentioned, have the 1st place time as a normal video download along with the emulator file, and the rest as just an emulator recording downloading. 1st place should get the "prize" of being turn into an actual video.

i dont think one has been made yet. i to would like to see a SMS speed run. i have quite a few fond memories about games on that system. mainly... Golvellious Spellcaster Pyscho Fox (would be quite interesting due to its high speed)

very good frenom. i had only ever played this game 3 times and from what i saw on your run this looks to be a very cool run ^^ cant wait for the finished version. just 1 thing i noticed, is there any way to kill magna centipede (spelling?) any faster? the fight just seemed a little long. mabye if you shot the moth weapon (cant think of the name of it sorry) onto the ground so the shrapnel hits him just after he reforms? just a thought. but like i said, exellent. work.

Mister DAN, you are one of the people who i have been talking about. people who think these runs are being made to hold records and such. these are made ONLY for the enjoyment of others to show how fast these games CAN be done if done "perfectly". no one claims that these are ligitimate runs done to prove they are the best at any said game. these are simply for others to watch and enjoy. if you fail to see this i'm sorry, there is'nt much that we can do to help. cheating is making yourself invincible, giving yourself infinate ammo, giving yourself all weapons/items from the start of a level and so on. these movies may seem like they cheat, but that is only because they are done extremely well (such as the new rockman run by bisqwit, bravo on that ^^) at slower speeds, so when sped up it does seem like they are cheating. you say "I just have difficulty comprehending how someone can call themselves a gamer when they deliberately break the written rules of a game by repeating sequences add infinitum, slowing down the game speed to a crawl, and coming out with a video that shows no obvious evidence of said techniques" but lets think about this for a moment. would someone take the time to slow down a game, spend hours and hours perfecting their run, possibly do an entirely NEW run if they were'nt gamers or loved the game? why would someone spend hours doing something they hated if they did'nt have to? and if I had MY way, people like you would be prevented from posting stupid comments like this on threads that serve a ligitimate purpose.

Tool-Assisted Run. personaly i think Emulater Assisted run sounds better. tool assisted makes things sound like we have a game-genie program running or something like that. anyways, the only "tool" being used is the emulator, so saying emulater assisted sounds less "cheaty"

yes. perfect. if people insist on having a disclaimer, then "Not an official speed run" would be spot on. nothing else needs to be said.

lol i dont see how anyone could miss that, however i still remain firm on belief that no one should have to have such a disclaimer to please sceptics. screw them.

but they could do it if they tried. It's much more difficult to replicate a legit run than a time attack. Besides, skill isn't what these runs are demonstrating.
i agree and disagree. yes, it is MUCH harder to replicate a "true" speed run as it is to do an emulated one. when you say skill is'nt what these runs are demonstrating, to a degree you are wrong. while your meaning in a whole, skill is'nt the main factor in these runs you are totaly right. however it does take a LOT, and i mean a LOT of skill to make a speed run worthy to be posted here on the main site. i have tried 2 runs and they were incredibly hard to do, boosting me into many many rerecords. it takes a lot of skill to do a run on a game with low rerecords, even at a slower pace things still are difficult. however i still believe that putting disclamers at the begining of every movie is wrong. the people who download these movies obviously come to this site, or others and there is a disclamer/faq on how these movies were made there. and also there is no where on any site i have EVER seen, that claimed these movies were proof of world records. only the runs on SDA are official records (there may be another site that has official runs but i dont know of any other) other sites are simply there to show the "perfect run" through the games. on these faqs there is all the information any would need to make one of these runs. IMO disclaimers are better left to the websites these movies are hosted on.

again, saying how these videos are accomplished will just make them less impressive to watch. no explanation should be required on how these were made. let people think they are fake if they want. its their fault if they cant see why people do this. anyways, if people insist on wanting a disclaimer at the start, then simply this would be fine. "this run is emulator recorded" it does'nt outright tell you how it was done or anything. just that it was recorded from an emulator. simple and direct. you start metioning slowing the game down, rerecords, auto fire buttons and people lose interest as they immedeatly think "hey i could do that if i tried"

personaly the idea of putting a disclaimer at the begining of any speed run/time attack video seriously detracts from its powerful nature. you can read any number of posts on other forums about speed runs such as the infamous super mario bros 3 run and they will always say that he cheats. if you see any of these videos and straight away think "this guy is cheating, this is fake" well i'm sorry to say that the whole point of the movie was missed by you. these are made for enjoyment of others and (to me at least) the pure shock factor that games we played so much as kids/teenagers are now done so damn quick. i remember playing games such as metroid for months never even getting to see kraid as i got lost so easy. putting "this movie is a hoax, we slow down the game and rerecord 100s of times" or anything like that before the movie would just hurt the atmosphere being created. its a lot more fun to watch a movie in total ignorance of how it was accomplished.

yes this is a rather crazy idea to say the least. i would'nt attempt anything like this myself but if done right it could be very cool to watch.

i think using the pause glitch makes it a lot more enjoyable to watch. i bought this game a long time ago when it was $90 and when i got up to the bosses i was like "good lord how can someone do this?" when i saw morimoto finish the bosses so simply i laughed so hard. it made the download time worth while. when you count the time to do the glitch vs the time it takes to actualy beat the boss normaly, they would even out really. the glitch simply makes them eaiser to do.

ok fair enough. i had heard no news about the rerelease of any castlevania or mega man games. while i know that 75 years or some crazy number of years must past before the copyright wears off, in 75 years time nintendo might not even be around then. there might be no trace of these games left. who knows what could happen in 75 years. sa deviance said, at that rate, you'll have grandchildren by the time you can play someone else's nes roms legally.

there is a site out there that deals specificly with games that have become abandonware. they must have at least 2000 games for download all for free (yes all free, and titles such as carmageddon, blood and blood 2 too) that are no longer in production by any company. when it comes to roms and if they are illegal or not, this is what i believe... if a company (such as nintendo and sega) is no longer making money from selling copys of a game, or collecting royalties from another publisher that has re-released the game, to me this classes it as abandonware. classic games such as all the ones on this site have been made by companys that have either long disbanded, or stopped producing these games/consoles altogether. while i can understand why nintendo and such want to protect their games but honestly... games for the nintendo, super nintendo, genesis and sega master system are no longer being officaly sold, or re-sold in any shape or form. the company has no interest in these titles anymore so what harm could POSSIBLY come from someone owning 1 of these titles illegaly? if no company is profiting from this then it is hurting no one. would they prefer their classic games that made them what they are today just be forgotten about? would they like us to never be able to play these games again? if wanting to keep a part of gaming history alive is illegal then god damn i'm guilty i bought quite a few games back when i owned a nes, snes, sega master system and mega drive (also known as genesis). if i had to guess i would say around 150 all up. many of these games when they were released were around $80 - $120 for me to buy. while i no longer own the cartrige of any of these games, i still believe i am entitled to own them in some form. i dont think that is asking to much. if nintendo dont like it they can give me my money back and i'll give them the roms.

xebra: i agree with you. there should be an automatic read only disable option somewhere in the menu. if not, at least pop up that asks if you want to. this however would make recordings a bit wierd though as there would be a secord where your character would just stop as you put your hands back into play mode. the only way i can think to counter this is to have a message pop up, Do you wish to disable read only and record? yes/no, you click yes, recording starting in 3, 2, 1, and then it starts

it seems i got quite a long while to go before i can beat your score, but that wont be happening anytime soon. this was the 1st speed run that i have done that i also posted publicly. i'm thinking that i might record a run through, when you get put back in the 1st level again. so i can run through all the levels, do all the bosses again but this time actualy get the final weapon and finish the game. but that prolly wont be for awhile. making this was hell lol

ok, i'm very sorry for the triple post, but after 3 hours of non stop playing i've actualy got a full G&G run ready! bout time to. i've watched it 3 times and nothing has gone wrong so far. however there are a few things... 1.) the first 2 levels were from my previous run, so i do waste a few shots. all the levels after that i try to conserve as much ammo as possible. bar 1 or 2 shots that miss. 2.) i dont actualy finish the game. now i know many of you wont like that but i tried for 1 1/2 hours to find the final weapon you need on the last level and i cant for the life of me get it. i have opened every chest, i have killed every monster, jumped every gap i can think of. nothing. so my run is simply to the screen that says i must go back to the start. mabye someone can add/do a run through leading on from mine? 3.) my run is on "professional" difficulty i dont get hit once. if i make another run, i might make it a "get hit only to speed things up run" 4.) the times are as follows. granted i may be off a bit in times, i only had my pc clock to time these lol 1st level - 1 min 48 secs 2nd level - 1 min 57 secs 3rd level - 2 min 5 secs 4th level - 1 min 30 secs 5th level 3 min 3 secs ----------------------------- total play time - 9 min 43 secs now, for the link! http://home.ripway.com/2004-6/130051/Ghouls_and_ghosts_Dark-Mana.zip (right click and save as if the link wont open with a left click) btw, the rom i used is as follows. Ghouls 'N Ghosts (REV 01) (JUE) [!].bin i'm not sure if your allowed to post where to get the roms here, so i wont. though it should'nt be to hard to find. anyways, ENJOY!

sorry for the double post but i though this was fairly important. i cannot get the movie to sync in level 4, the underground/worm level. for some reason it just is'nt working. i have tried rerecording the levle like 10 times and each time i usualy works fine up to where you start sliding on the ice, then it gets bad and messes up. having to do the same level over and over is really starting to p**s me off so unless someone wants to finish my run, hopefully which they would have better luck than me, the movie is on hold until i can get this to sync. oh great, i'm watching the video to check where it desyncs exactly and now it desyncs in level 3. *sigh* ok someone else might have to do this because its not working for me at all. i might do a new run later on but i'm not sure. anyways, FFXI time now. bye

yes i know. if i ever do a future version i will make all my shots count. but when you use the dagger magic spell, it is impossible to conserve all shots as there is a delay in your mirror image that cant be helped. most of the shots come from me going nuts with the dagger on the 3rd level, which is a top scrolling level for half of it and i needed to clear the bat things, which moved a lot. anyways. i'm doing the last half of my run now. still not sure if i can finish the game without having to go back to the start to find the "good" weapon but we'll see. i'll do my best.

i am currently in the process of making a Ghouls And Ghosts run. as of right now, i am at stage 5 of 6 (i think) and have 280 rerecords. i'm used to playing super ghouls and ghosts and having a double jump so thats why i've had to rerecord so much. my bad. so far i am at 0 hits. a few things though 1.) i change weapon once or twice by mistake. my main weapon is dagger as much as possible. 2.) i dont conserve ammo, but i try my best to hit all my targets. hard to do when you push the fire button three times, and 3 shots actualy come out. not used to that. (damn you famtaisa!) i'll update again tomorrow when i have the full version up and ready to go. btw i need someone to host this file, or at least tell me a good place to do so as i dont have any means to do this. ok i've just noticed in my replay that there is a desync half way through level 4, so i'm going to have to rerecord that level. bummer. anyways thats all for tonight. more tomorrow

from what i understand, the glich cannot be done for any other part of the game. however, since you would only be doing this glitch near the end of the game, doing this resets your game into thinking you've started a new one right? so whats to stop you from say, doing that, and starting all over with max weapon skills, spell levels and all and doing a speed run then? might not be a whole lot of fun to watch though. just a thought
