I'd imagine the problem with DKC3 is that the graphics aren't amenable to getting good quality with a small filesize, so it takes a lot of fiddling to get a satisfactory result. Regardless of when it comes out, I look forward to an encode as well.

Ahh, thanks for the explanation. That makes sense. I like the repeated use of Big Toss; it's more interesting than chaining the bat dash repeatedly. Pity about the slow rises before Dracula, though.

Could you explain what you're doing to keep getting heals over and over again? I assume it's something to do with the Fairy, but I thought all of her abilities used up items in inventory.

Finally, a Megaman game in which the boss refights weren't tiresome! :) Looked good to my untrained eye. Nice work!

The big problem I see with TASing without an emulator is loading times. Load times will depend in part on the position of the disc/hard drive platter at the time the load starts (since the drive must first seek to the proper location on the disc/platter before it can start reading data), and that's more or less impossible to get to be consistent. I guess this is another reason why solid-state drives are superior to ones with moving parts. :)

From what I've read, the piece generator for Tetris is fixed to one of a small handful of piece patterns, to reduce the effect of luck on the game (since NWC was intended for competitions).

The chipmunk cutscenes really make that video. Awesome. :) mz: presumably he's fast-forwarding. Is that an emulator feature or part of the game?

Well, what's the highest point in the level that you can jump from? And how high above that is the highest ring you have to reach? If that's higher than the peak of a triple jump, then it's impossible to do without a cap.

Dunno what you meant about the FAIL bit; looked pretty good to me for a single take on a game, unassisted. Sure, there were plenty of minor mistakes, but without rerecording or lots of takes that's going to happen. That said, this should probably go into the "Speedrun competitions" forum, since all of the console-specific forums are meant for tool-assisted runs. :)

Y'all love beta tests, right? Fusillade's a fun little game I've been working on that's heavily inspired by "bullet hell" scrolling shmups. Fly ships! Dodge bullets! Inflect! Don't shoot anything because your ship has no weaponry! The game pits you against an endless series of progressively harder bullet patterns, with the goal being simply to survive as long as possible. Here's a sample screenshot: The game's currently in open beta, so you can download a copy (Windows and Mac only -- sorry, Linux users, I'll be working on the Linux version when I get the time) here. And if you want to help support my game development habit, preorders are open, so you can get a registration code, which lets you play extra courses and make your own, for $2.50. Alternatively, if you're the first to report a bug on the forum, you get a code for free! Really, though, I just wanted to share my project with you all. I hope you enjoy it!

This always ends up being a divisive topic... The way I see it is, we have three relevant categories of audience members, with some degree of overlap: * The group that cares about speed above all else (of which ComicalFlop is an example) * The group that cares about entertainment above all else, but accepts that speed can be entertaining (e.g. Alden, myself) * People with a lengthy past history of playing / watching SSB The first category isn't going to care in the slightest if you use the same combination / set of moves repetitively, so long as you're fast. The third category knows the game inside and out, and thus doesn't mind so much that a speedrun doesn't show off everything the game has to offer. You won't have any complaints from either of these two groups for a speedrun. The second group, however, is rapidly bored by repetitive gameplay, and vaguely knows that there's lots of stuff to do in SBB (though less than in Melee or Brawl, of course), and thus is distressed that the run doesn't really seem to represent the game very well. In short, you have a game that has vastly different entertainment potential depending on the viewer's background and personality, which is why I think these runs tend to generate so much heat.

If nothing else, I'd say the WTF factor of skipping a supposedly required item is worth it.

Tough choice. I'm gonna go with Psychic World, just because I have a soft spot for those clunky old-school platformers.

I wouldn't be surprised if the N64 uses its CPU for some timing functions, which would cause overclocking the console to make games play weirdly.

To get an item to drop, the RNG must be in a specific state. The RNG's state advances every time you call it. In SotN, it sounds like the RNG gets called once each frame, but it also gets called when you attack or use your shield. So to get an item to drop, you'd try the following: kill the enemy ASAP Wait a frame, then kill the enemy Wait a frame while using your shield, then kill the enemy Wait a frame while using your weapon, then kill the enemy etc. And there's probably other ways to advance the RNG as well. For example, in the Megaman X series, generating dust (by dashing or sliding down walls) advances the RNG, if I recall correctly. Basically your goal is to a) figure out what state you need to get a drop, and then b) figure out how to get to that state as quickly as possible.

And back in college, I spent a good five minutes convincing my roommate, a math major, that 8+5 was not 11. :) Computer scientists can't count, math majors can't add.

I remember playing this back in college. I managed to find some kind of walljump glitch. If I recall correctly, it involved crashing into a wall from a glide, and then hitting jump on a specific frame. Think that could be useful?

Ninja walksruns right for justice! Certainly flashy and the game appears to be well-run, but I found the bosses to be rather samey and of course the enemies all get ignored as they should be. In short, I don't really feel like there's a lot of substance here. Ehh, weak yes vote. The addition of the emulator error (assuming that's what it is) makes judging the game on technical grounds more or less impossible.
