Why didn't you go for golds in the competitions? Seems to me that would have been worth the extra time cost, since otherwise you aren't really "beating" the game, just completing it. Nice work otherwise, though.

Do a hard reset in frame advance mode, then start recording your movie. It should count as recording from power-on. That is, if I recall correctly how this stuff works. It's been awhile since I tried my hand at TASing...

System Error: you are of course entitled to your opinion, but I can't help but read your reasoning (SMB1's early finish aside) as roughly equating to "We already have umpteen million run&gun games; therefore voting no on this Metal Slug submission because it isn't novel enough."

You could also try Metroid 1 + Metroid 2 for a cross-platform TAS. The NES and Gameboy share control schemes so it's not like there's room for ambiguity. I think that'd work better than trying for more recent titles.

I think he meant more a game in which you could create glitches that allowed you to cheat, not a game that was explicitly designed with differing rules from normal chess. The goal is to find a game in which TAS tools become relevant for more than just manipulating the computer's decisions.

I guess this is what happens when you don't put a huge "THIS IS A TOOL-ASSISTED MOVIE" warning at the front of the video. Nobody reads the video descriptions any more.

Angband can theoretically get you down to the bottom of the dungeon (where Morgoth, the final boss, lurks) in 53 turns (go down staircase, grab adjacent stack of scrolls of Deep Descent, read 'em all), but he has 12k hitpoints and your average high-level character is happy to be dealing 600 damage/round if all attacks hit, which they don't usually. And of course you're only level 1 at this point. I think it'd be doable inside of 500 turns, though the amount of research required to find a good starting RNG seed is insane.

You... completed four NES Mario games with just one input? That's... AWESOME. I didn't see that one coming. I think this should be published, even if just on the basis of novelty value, but not sure how it could be classified as anything other than a demonstration.
Just so you know, Goldfish, this was also done with Mega Mans 3-6 (and AngerFist made a one-level run of all six NES titles). I'm just posting this because it sounded to me like you weren't familiar with the multi-run concept. There's also a Mega Man X1/X2 run which shows more synchronization and was the pioneer of the "two games with one input" concept.

Looked good to me. Great work, guys!

Btw, this was like the last run to finish on my list. What do I TAS now?
Metal Warriors, Recca, Super Aleste? Granted two of those are scrolling shmups...

I doubt it's solely to blame, though it's almost certainly the largest contributor. You can also consider the echo chamber effect -- people online tend to only want to talk to people who agree with them, which in turn creates a false feeling of consensus. When they stumble across those who actually don't agree with them, then, culture shock ensues and could result in harsher responses than is actually warranted. Maybe. Also consider the difficulty of expressing body language online. Someone may start out trying to be reasonable, but because of continually missed body language cues, their responses could end up getting more and more extreme as they get annoyed because the person they're talking to isn't getting their point. Maybe. I of course have no evidence to back any of this up. It's just random hypothesizing. Still, the GIFT relies in large part on anonymity, and given that even highly-respected members of large communities (who are therefore no longer exactly anonymous -- their online identity has value to them) are still susceptible to ending up in massive flamewars, I can't say that the GIFT accounts for all of internet assholery.

Unfortunately, Nico doesn't work for me; the video claims to load but I only ever get a dark screen. Looking forward to an encode somewhere where I can actually view it.

If I recall correctly, you have to buy a new sword in the NES version to be able to break blocks, which is necessary before you can finish the first (second?) dungeon. So right away you have to start working on your wallet.

My amazing powers of prognostication say that in the distant future, the publication history for this game looks like 1) Hero Team publication 2) Rose Team submission, bickering over if it should be accepted, eventual rejection for being too similar to previous publication. 3) Dark Team submission, bickering over what to do with it, eventually obsoletes Hero Team. 4) Chaotix Team submission, minor complaints over there being too many Sonic Heroes runs, gets published. 5) Hero Team submission with all emeralds using a save based on prior submissions to have all other stories clear. Bickering over whether the bonus stages differentiate it enough to get it published or if just the last bit should be done; eventual publication.

There's two arrows, two wall-following weapons, and some landmines, I think. The arrows are the only ones that are worth a damn, really. Maze of Galious for the NES is actually a completely different game with similar concepts; it also has a better selection of subweapons and more difficult route planning (since you have to get money to buy certain items needed to progress).

I remember an old roguelike called Omega had a similar death. While in the outdoors, there was a rare chance to get struck by a cosmic ray, which would cause some damage. IIRC your first turn was spent for you, going from the outdoors into the city; it was theoretically possible to get struck and killed by a cosmic ray in that turn.

I'm with FatRatKnight. An animated GIF ought to serve just fine here. Also, Twoflower really needs to pick his champions more carefully...or is it less carefully?

Shouldn't the center of the new circle have a distance of R + 1 from (-2, 0), R +2 from (1, 0), and 3 - R from (0, 0)? Two of those should give you two legs of a triangle, the remaining leg of which is known already (lying on the X axis); from there you ought to be able to do some trig to get the triangle's angles. Or am I off?

In this case, the entire point of the TAS is that a horribly suboptimal character is used to beat the crap out of the objectively best character. It wouldn't be as thematically interesting to see two evenly-matched boxers go at it. As Patashu noted, the first ~30s (during which the match is set up) add significantly to the entertainment value, since we see just how big a gap there is between the two characters.

Before you get too excited about competitive TASes, make certain that the optimal strategy doesn't devolve to implementing an MK Walker. If every attack has a window of vulnerability that can be exploited, then all you need to do is wait for your opponent to expose himself and then slam him -- conversely, doing anything else is just asking to be countered into oblivion. If you require each player to play far enough in advance that windows can't be exploited, then you're largely asking them to guess what their opponents will do, turning the entire thing into a big game of rock-paper-scissors. Not that there's no strategy in RPS, mind you.

How close are we to having a working PS2 emulator? People are able to work on Gamecube/Wii TASes (if they're willing to put up with a still-in-development emulator), but I haven't heard of anyone being able to work on a PS2 TAS yet.

I found this to be pretty amusing, and it didn't drag on too long either. I think there's room for it in the demonstrations section. Good work!

Another thing to consider getting would be getting the dagger; it allows you to kill all bats by typing "umbrella" on the keyboard. That would save some time since there are rooms where you have to kill bats to continue; the room with the dagger is already on your route several times.
