I had this problem a few weeks ago; updating my video card driver worked for me, though I'm aware there are many causes for BSOD.

Surely your exam week must be over by now.
you're right, it is over, but now I have finals! I'll still have enough time after that to finish this run and send it in on time for the TG bounty. The wait will be worth it I promise.

I would also prefer making on SNES, since it is a bigger game on size and snes is a newer system than nes, so I'm sure Chessmaster plays stronger on snes, therefore it will be harder to beat him.
Nes and Snes chessmasters are about equal in skill. I was able to play similar lines against both. At 60/5 difficulty they seem around Class A-B strength.
By the way: Is Deviance a GM?
I'm around expert skill. I've beaten a couple masters at shorter time controls, but I'm not a GM yet.

shouldn't matter too much, but the NES version starts in 2D mode which makes it easier to see things. If you do make one, do it on at least 60/5 difficulty. Edit: ok, I just beat chessmaster in 14 moves using no savestates. Game went: Deviance-Chessmaster 1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. Nc3 Bb4 4. e5 c5 5. a3 Bxc3+ 6. bxc3 Ne7 7. Nf3 O-O 8. Bd3 Nd7 9. Bxh7+ Kxh7 10. Ng5+ Kg8 11. Qh5 Nf6 12. exf6 Re8 13. Qxf7+ Kh8 14. Qxg7# 1-0 It started losing to me the moment it came out of its opening book. Computers=stupid by nature.

I tried out NES Chessmaster a bit today and found that it makes some really bad moves on its default setting (newcomer 1). If a time attack were made it would have to be on a normal setting (60 moves in 5 minutes). Some really nice attacking games can be made, but the viewer will have to be a little patient because the chessmaster takes a couple seconds to think per move.

nah, there are prepared lines you can play that are so complicated that even chessmaster won't be able to navigate through them properly. It would only be cool if you could make some entertaning board positions to occur in the game, like sacrificing a lot of material to deliver checkmate.

Would that be legitimate?
since it would be a novelty run, I don't think it would be too much of a problem. It would mean though that anyone competing for it would have to use the same save. Anyway, this should probably be discussed in a separate thread.

you could do a hammer bros. suit run if you play the SNES version, since it saves your inventory if you choose to start from world 1.

It depends on how many rupees you have when you enter the lost woods. It costs 100 to play, and you can win 300 in the best chest. So that's a 200 rupee profit each time. Assuming you have 100, you'd only have to do it a couple times to accumulate 500 rupees.

I'll test the chests in the Dark World to see how many frames it takes to collect them both vs. only one.
I believe gambling is faster than going out of your way to get chests. I'm talking about the gambling game in the lost woods, which is on your way to getting the master sword.

I could die within dungeons as well as a substitute Magic Mirror as well
when I was speedrunning this game, I found that using death saves time in the Desert Palace. Do you really want to do that though? I don't think it would look very good.

0. Hyrule Castle l1. East Palace (Bow) l2. Desert Palace i. Ether
you can't get it this early because you need the master sword as well.
if you need the fire wand to kill the Ice Demon and Kholdstare (will the lamp work?)
you can't use the lamp offensively. Fire rod is essential.

don't you only get 50 rupees for paying 20
Winning the gambling game nets you 300 rupees in the best chest. This strat should only be used if it is determined that you cannot get the required amount of rupees in time by exploiting randomness.

Well, they have the best acceleration
Actually, Yoshi and the Princess have the best acceleration. They have to worst control too.
the monkey
the monkey in this game is indeed DK Jr.

GP is boring; the AI is so bad it has to cheat in order to compete with you. Do all time trials in one; downloading all those smvs would be annoying. Do shortcut, because that's what people would be most interested in seeing. Strats will be a problem if they're kept secret by the record holders.

the simplest way to convert these runs to flash would be to do a direct avi>swf encoding. I've done this before with good results. There are some limitations though. A swf can only be 16000 frames long, meaning longer runs would have to be more than one swf file long, but could probably be strung together using a load command. I've already converted SMB successfully, and I was planning to do the same with my future runs. I'd show a demo but I don't have my hosting back just yet.

Knowing how to properly use hits to save time is a skill, and is in most cases riskier than avoiding the enemy. It is like sacrificing your valuable pieces in a chess game to gain a decisive advantage; hence, two points on your lifebar is worth giving up to save 2 seconds of time. Many people associate "getting hit" with "making a mistake" which is a mistake on its own.

Deviance, check out this page, one of TG's 2005 bounties is DKC 101% completion and the prize is $50
something else to motivate me. It should have been more though, since DKC 101% no save is probably one of the hardest on that list. The bounty for GnG fast completion with NO CONTINUES is also insane.

It's going good so far. The only problem is that I don't have as much free time these days to do runs, unlike during summer where I could do many runs each day. Right now, I can maybe do a run or two every other day, which is what is making this take so long. The wait is worth it though; during summer my theoretical time was 45, right now it's 43.

Hmm... Get a bicycle. Then maby the car get's jellous and changes the oil by it self!
But what if that fails? If he's too lazy to change his oil, I'm pretty sure he'd be too lazy to buy a bike and ride it around town.
In Soviet Russia, oil changes you!
that's true, but also, "In Soviet Russia, car drives you!" So shouldn't the car be complaining about changing your oil?
