I liked it, gets a yes vote from me. Thought it would be a little faster if you lost some life but I suppose i can see why you did that. Certainly would be imposible to do on console. o-o

I like the movie. Not sure what to vote though. I don't really like shoot 'em up games. Heh...just wanted to see if one was entertaining to watch.

Heheh, well I have to give you credit, I would certainly be impressed if I saw someone do this on console...but I am fairly sure there are runs that exist faster then this already. Seemed very slow going. For me that is pretty awesome cause I can turn it on and have some background noise when I draw. But for the purposes of the site I don't think this is gonna quite cut it. You did choose a game with many failed attempts. Good luck next time. :) Leaving you with my encouragement, I will cast my no vote.

Of course I'm voting yes! This is awesome! In fact I was so excited I didn't even want to know about the new glitch til after I watched the movie, oh that was super awesome.

I apologize for my delays, again I've actually been busy here with my real life. I guess some things just have to come before the videogames. I hope you guys understand.

I like this game a lot and I am very interested in this TAS. I'll share what little I can (that you probably already know) in the hopes of helping. 1) In-battle manipulation seems to be based on Brian's position. I don't think time is a factor at all. Also, you only seem to get a certain number of "choices" e.g. Brian stands in one spot, avalanche hits once, Brian moves to a different spot, avalanche hits twice. I'm not sure how big these "spots" are but they seem to be about Brian's size. 2) Avalanche gives the most damage all at once but is it faster than power staff+melee in real time? That is, if you stick with melee you can attack very rapidly whereas avalanche has a long, laggy animation. Not to mention enemies close attack is usually faster than their ranged attack too. You might save some time using melee over avalanche (assuming you can manipulate misses or invincibility) at least in some battles. The benefits might not manifest at first, but if you use melee throughout the entire game it will be very powerful at the end. Just a thought.
1) It is somewhat, though it's not like I could take one step and get a difference. I'd have to take multiple steps, and sometimes it's not even within my agility circle to get a change...I've tested this a lot, especially trying to beat Sovering. 2) I know that this attack is very good, the only problem with using Melee to attack every turn is that I am completing this game at an EXTREMELY low level. getting hit by enemies is a 1 or 2 hit KO most of the time. I can't afford to get hit and it would therefor waste time to try and use Melee all the time. It's near impossible to manipulate this game. At first I thought I could get all misses, but it seems like most of the time you ARE going to get hit or you ARE going to miss...100%. I'm still trying my best to figure this out though.

Same here. I got a new comp and managed to watch the WIP. Very impressive so far.
Thanks I appreciate the support. :)

How is progress going in this game? I have really enjoyed your run so far, keep up the good work.
Thanks. I've just passed the ship for the first time. I've been stuck for over a month now mostly due to having somewhat of a life...heh.

I found a way to improve your run by about 600-800 frames (didn't really try to optimize it to much). The way to do it is grab wings in the starting town and the second one. If you use the wing after you collect the spirit in the starting town, you can save like 500 frames or so. The second town only seems to save 100 or so. Not enough to start a run over for, but something to keep in mind for later towns. Edit: I forgot that you have to backtrack to the castle, if you use the wing after getting the earth orb and exiting the castle, looks like you can save 1000 frames.
I see your logic..that seems pretty logical. I'll have to remember that if I do this run again and i will keep your advice for later towns if i can. the edit i don't really fallow...you cant warp right from inside the forest to the castle right? Didn't think you were allowed to do that.

I left my no vote as well, I am gonna have to agree with AKA, plus I also tried to offer some advice to this user, having thoroughly beat this game on console I am fairly sure this can be done much better...I mean Banjo isn't even the fastest starting driver. I believe Krunch is. I could be wrong on that though...

I of course give this my yes vote. I did enjoy the ice sliding, that was certainly about the fastest I've ever seen that game go. Mickey is so darn slow normally! Great job. :3

I'm not entirely impressed by this run, I see quite a few delays. o-o You know if you hit Plane and Hover speed boosts on the very outside edges there is no delay when firing off right? Some of those delays look like they could be taking upwards of a second...I noticed sometimes you miss speed balloons. I don't know how avoidable this is, but it's just weird when you get a speed balloon one lap and don't get it the next. Granted above all of this I think this beats any console run I've ever done of this game, so it definitely looks like a fun run. Keep going you're half way done! :)

Okay, I must leave this my yes. Being that I'm so furry, some of those scene's you did with those sprites were freggen awesome! My favorite was of course the dragon parts, heheh. Rawr, explicit thoughts involving sprites in a very funny game....how furry of me. Anyway, great run man. :3

No objection. Hands down a yes. I can certainly see the effort you put into this. I was observing how you were saving time and it just seemed flawless. There is no way I am going to try and compete against this time. Great job!

I'm not sure what to vote...seems kinda pointless when in two levels you did use powerups, in which case "minimalist" would also mean you'd have to do what you absolutely need to finish those other levels. It was very well played though and I very much enjoyed watching it. I'll think about what to vote for a bit and get back to it. :)

Well I watched the WIP. I must say I was confused about your goals until I read you forgot about MIPS, pretty good so far. Ought to be interesting seeing the game beat just getting a mess of coins. Interesting goal. Is there really only 104 coins in JRB?

I was wrong about two things in my last post. First, the level is not stored in the SRAM area, it is stored in the RAM area. Second, correctly emulating Echo RAM means that there are far fewer levels in which you can do the through the ground cheat to beat the level. This really does invalidate the TAS completely. (Pumpkin Zone 1 does happen to be one of the levels in which you can cheat through.) Edit: And Here is the major bombshell: Fixed version of VBA (not a re-recording version) Because far fewer levels are now clearable using that technique, the TAS needs to be completely redone from scratch.
In the great words of Mortal Kombat...ahem....TOASTY!

why do you think we didn't get the best route still? because it doesn't look like it? beats me, it is the fastest route, sorry.
Yes because it doesn't look like it. You gotta chill out man I'm not attacking you or your strategies. I bet it is fastest! You're more of a pro at this then I am. I am going purely upon observation, and observation tells me you made a lot of side-tracking when you didn't have to. But maybe you had to! Now if I decide to try and play around with this game myself I will probably find that you're right and that your path is the fastest. You make it seem like I am totally denying you when I can't.

Wow I guess I was tired when I wrote this if you misunderstood all but the last question....you covered most of the bases anyway and I understand better now. As for the route, I don't think you got it still, but in thinking about it I think I see your logic anyway. If all of this is the case you're not going to be able to avoid getting "meh"s for this run. It just looks sloppy to people who have not tested your tactics. IE me and apparently a few other people. I wasn't the only one to vote meh. Thank you for clearing everything up! [EDIT by Bisqwit: Removed full quote of the preceding post. Please quote only the portions that are relevant for your post. Foda's post is very well viewable just 15 centimeters above, it does not need to be repeated in its entirety.]

can you especify please where you had that feeling? I can tell you, you've got the wrong impression. really, no offense, but people assuming things just because of how long it took to make the movie is kind of pissing me off. I need to cool down.
Aye, for sure. I did specify that I could be wrong about these too dude. things that stick out to me are: Very obviously the path sticks out to me, why did you go from Pumpkin Zone to Turtle Zone back to Pumpkin Zone and to Mario Zone? You did the pipe glitch in Mario Zone, why not just use pumpkin pipe glitch in Mario zone to mario zone pipe glitch until you are done with Mario zone, then go to Turtle Zone using mario zone pipe glitch one time...after that I can understand going all the way back to Pumpkin zone. next is getting the last two coins. do you HAVE to fight both of those bosses for their coins? Now it seems like Space zone must be done normally, so why not have that one be the one you play normally to get the Wario castle entry animation..which seems from this run has to happen for the game to keep going.. this then brings me to enemy gathering. Does it really take long to defeat those balls in wario castle without the super star? I mean you killed that first one really fast to get the super star, and it looks like you went pretty out of your way to defeat those enemies to get the superstar, and then on top of that going a little slower might manipulate the wario battle better? I didn't see you guys using that "jump and get pushed forward an extra pixil" a lot..granted through the entire game seems like would save maybe a few frames...and also granted that I may not have seen it being done even though it actually was. man explanations for all of these would be totally awesome because I'm curious. :)

I was very excited to see this movie, I can see that it was planned quickly and done quickly on some level. It is a great movie and I enjoyed watching it, but under the circumstances of it's completion, being able to see places of obvious lost time, I'm gonna have to go with a "meh" on this one. I haven't tried TASing this moving myself, so I could be wrong. I guess we will see when the improved version comes out? I don't know, but for this one I am sticking with what I feel. Great work for a contest that apparently only a few people took seriously. Such a shame too cause it's a cool idea.

Whew, thanks for the support Zurreco. I worked on this for quite a long time...I can't get it any better. I tried for at least 7 hours to get only two enemy encounters from Glencoe Forest to the ship...but man did I fail. My luck manipulation I think is getting pretty good. The game eventually puts your chance at A battle to 100% when I get to a certain coordinate. I can switch the battles up and get any battle I want but avoiding them no matter how much I manipulate becomes IMPOSSIBLE. This is my run so far, Optimized to the ship toward the West Carmagh area. My time up to this point: 21m 15s Time to this point on SDA run: 40m 14s 47.2% faster. I still think I will finish the game at 1H 45M. I want to see how close I actually get...heh http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/5742/Quest64USAop3.m64

Ugh, miner setback. Finished Glencoe forest exactly how I wanted, and even picked up an extra spirit that I didn't see the SDA runner grab. I needed it anyway. The setback comes when I head toward the darn ship. I spent a few hours TASing in the wrong direction! I went in an entire circle and ended up back at conner forest. Man this game sucks for that, even knowing the route and still getting turned around. Oh well, so I'll start again when I can. I'll show a WIP when I get to the ship, as it's a good ref point to the SDA run.

Ha. No doubt. I rented this damn thing 5 times and never beat it, so I'll definitely be looking forward to seeing the game get trounced. I can't even run Mupen, so I haven't been following the thread. Good luck, though. :) *wanders off*
*laughs* Yeah my parents actually bought this game for me, it took me forever to beat! TASing this game is taking just a little longer then it takes to beat the game normally. It doesn't even feel like I'm wasting my time manipulating battles...heh

I look foreward to seeing a run like this go heavy on fire, since the most practical thing to do if you are plaing in real time is focus on earth/water. I dont even think I have seen the higher lever fire spells.
I decided to keep going with Earth as the realtime run did. The earth higher spells are very highly effective against later monsters. I overkill on fire in the beginning to pound on Solvering who takes forever with rock lvl 1 x-x

Hehe, well that makes me feel better. It's certainly nice to know someone has watched it. >_> I'm am very sure by now that this will at least be a decent TAS because I think everyone and their brother knows how sucky the battles are and how many there are...

Testing both routes, getting the 5 or 6 spirits costs about a minute and a half. Given my low earth level and the fact that I need it decently high, I think I'm gonna go for it. Path chosen. Seems as though the thread is dying off. If anyone has any input let me know, otherwise I will just continue. :)

Yes! Definitely yes from me. You've brought back half the point of this site with his run. Entertainment! I think sometimes we forget that is half the point! You did beautifully. I think you chose the right parts to sacrifice time, some parts I'm not even sure if they were even slower. Like glitching that stupid bomb dude into a star in Wet & Dry world! Oh my god! my other favorite part was BLJ glitching to the last star on Rainbow Ride. Awesome.
