I really like that second picture personally

So what was that about door transitions in the commentary video?
Um, could you be a bit more specific? Is it the part where they mention an "improvement" during suitless? Sometimes when going through doors, the camera has to realign vertically during the transition, we call these scrolling doors usually. Jumping through them so that you enter the room at a different height can make this realignment a lot faster, or slower in some cases. Usually jumping is bad for movement generally and the faster transition doesn't make up for it, it gets a lot more relevant after Space Jump since jumping through doors becomes more reasonable. The case they talked about I honestly didn't know about at the time so I didn't have a good answer in the video, but there's a room in suitless where normal runners need to stand around and spend like a second waiting for the searchlights to move out of the way. So even though jumping into the door slows down movement, making the transition faster means the wait timer starts earlier and you save time. This isn't the case in a TAS since it can move fast enough to skip a cycle, I did look into it more thoroughly later :).

Link to video I know late wave was solved 2 years ago, but I finally got the motivation to test stuff.

Honestly, I would not recommend doing any% for this game at all, it will only be marginally different from 0%, a few extra missile tanks speeding up like 3 boss fights. Unassisted runs already pick up less than 10 items and a TAS should be able to settle for even less. And 0% is conceptually way more interesting. All published runs on the site are done in English right now, and switching version exclusively for language reasons was frowned upon last I checked, but I also haven't really been active for a long time so what do I know lol. Real or IGT is a bit tough, but going for IGT would optimally involve pausing mid gameplay for luck manipulation and that just looks bad to me. All previous runs were made on VBA but you should probably use Bizhawk by now. If you're still intent on any%, then probably grab enough missiles to get the glitch kill on Yakuza which is around 25. And MAYBE one e-tank, damage boosting isn't really that useful but enemies do a lot of damage late in the game, so even a few of them would deplete energy really quickly.

Er, so what axodo was trying to say before the sad formatting accident is that there's a vine blocking entry to the right side of Norfair, like the vines blocking off Varia suit, that magically disappears when you grab Power Grip. To our current knowledge there is no way to destroy or avoid it. The technique we use to skip zebetites might work in theory, but we need ice beam and that's behind the vine. Even if we found a way around that, we need plasma beam (the unknown item right next to power grip) to damage the black pirates at the end of escape. And power grip is a really useful item! So just like we still grab hi-jump, we might just grab power grip on our way back from getting the unknown item, even if it was optional.

He wasn't against speedruns, he was against having it on big marathons to avoid spoiling incidental viewers.

Nope, you're almost a full second short of making that. And even if you could I'm not sure it would actually be any faster, shinesparking isn't nearly as fast as it seems with fairly long startup and bonk animations.

Is it not possible to jump over Kraid like in ZX497's NBMB run?
Doing that leaves Kraid alive and doesn't let you enter Tourian. NBMB can do it because it wants speedbooster and specifically doesn't want to kill Kraid OR enter Tourian.

Interesting how you used a pirate's shot to help clear that annoying tunnel that alternates single bomb and shootable blocks. Has someone else used that in a run before and I just never noticed it?
Among standard speedrunners, it's been a known strat in that room for a while. But I think this is the first TAS it's been done in.

These chrono tricks are really cute, it's so sad that they don't end up useful for anything. This game is really frustratingly solid sometimes.

For the record, I mostly agree with Warp. I tend to just not watch/follow the runs I don't like, but I do get a bit sad when a run I've liked in the past turns into something I would rather not watch. I think people are jumping on Warp a bit much in this thread as if he's trying to make these things go away or delegitimize certain speedrunning techniques. He's just expressing his opinion and trying to start a discussion. This shitstorm is kind of uncalled for... from all sides.

Personally, I was sort of overwhelmed by the way the documentation was presented. Speaking about total control even being plausible made me feel that: a) This isn't the kind of run I'm interested in regardless. b) If I won't be able to do the really technical stuff, what's the point? c) I won't be able to create something of even decent quality in the timespan allotted. I probably didn't give the game the chance it might deserve, only tried it out for about 15-20 minutes before giving up. But I was so immediately demotivated right away by the apparent scope of the task. Not to say the game choice was actually poor, but it really wasn't for me :). I'm sure the players enjoying this are busy trying to finish their runs.

I was originally against using the glitch because of reasons already mentioned by others: if the image is not part of tricking the OCR, it becomes arbitrary and we might as well not draw something or draw it in something else instead. But after thinking about it some more, we are ultimately still tricking the OCR, aren't we? Even if it's done in two separate steps (draw an image that gets ignored and draw answer invisibly) both of these steps involve tricking the OCR. And in the end, we ARE drawing an image as part of our answer and it DOES get accepted by the game. The technical reason to why this works doesn't change the fact that it is potentially hilarious and impossible for a human player to perform.

The room strat shown by Kaizoman at around 2:45 in the race is ~20 frames faster than what's in Mothrayas's movie. I tried to edit it in myself but kept getting additional lag frames all over the rest of the run, I'm a bit unfamiliar with FCEUX so I might be doing something wrong. I'll leave it up to someone who knows what they're doing to add it instead :). Link to video Everything else I managed to learn doing my run is already in there or has been improved upon.

Would it not be possible for someone to create a quick and dirty encode of the top 4 runs for you to show? We have lots of talented encoders on the site, and it's only a ~6 minute movie. (note, I am NOT one of these talented encoders :P I have no idea if this is actually unreasonable)

Just submitted my movie. This was a really fun idea, a well chosen game and a reasonable time limit. Lots of thumbs up. If possible you should try to display it on stream as a race between the top 3-4 times I think.

So did some tests today and the time save seems to be around 6 seconds.

Well the current route doesn't have Ice Beam in Ridley, so we'd need to grab that earlier in order to do the clip. I'm still confident it will save time even with that though, but I'm not sure how much. I'll do a rough timing of it this weekend I think.

My best guess is that if you're standing on multiple enemies and one of them dies your vertical position is forced to be on top of the remaining one(s). Except in this case, the "remaining" enemy is also dead and has already set its position to its new spawn point in preparation. Pipe bugs are a bit special since this immediate respawn only happens for the first bug. This is likely why we have to shuffle the enemy slots around a bit for this to work, to make sure this evaluation happens in the correct order and we're forced to the position of the first bug specifically.

There's that one Pony game that's trying to be like Ace Attorney. From what I've seen (which, admittedly, isn't much) it seems to be of pretty high quality, and built from the ground up with an MLP setting using the Ace Attorney series as a base for gameplay.

Yeah I dunno, Adventure Time didn't work for me either. My friends kept recommending it and I saw a bit into the 4th season before I stopped. Never really seemed like anything special to me *shrug*.

Oh god I love Pinkie Pie so much. I had a near constant smile on my face the entire episode.

To be fair, we have no idea if the stare is magical or not. A lot of things the ponies (and not only unicorns) do seem to work on magic in some way. Like pegasus flight, there is no way those wings are providing lift as we know it. Either that or ponies weigh next to nothing. And we don't even know if the stare was the cause of the spell mishap, Twilight fails her spells all the goddamn time. Which sort of makes me wonder why ANY of them would think using magic to alter the behaviour of an animal a good idea.

I never really understood why everyone got so worked up over this princess thing anyway. This was about what I expected would happen, and the writers assured us this is what would happen, yet everyone went bonkers.

Everything last season except for Too Many Pinkies was forgettable at best. I just want another season 2 ;(. Though from what little previews and stuff I've seen I have hopes for S4 still.

To be honest, the episode wasn't that bad. Daring Do being real and an RD recolor is sort of stupid, I agree. But I really liked the "obsessive fan" part demonstrated by Twilight and Rainbow. All in all, season 4 so far is still better than almost all of season 3.
