I'm not so sure if this trick has been discussed or not, but it MAY come in handy, if the time to get the Avenger offsets the time to dupe Excaliburs, or whatever. Also, it could be used to mass dupe any sword for money. Just throwing it out there :D
I looked into that for my speedrun, but I doubt there's any way the Avenger could be any use, and especially in a TAS where you can have perfect menu manipulation. Avenger is way out of the way in the Sylvan cave, and worse, it's one of those chests in that room with the 6 chests that all have monster fights. Add that on to the time that Excalibur itself takes, and it'd be better to just get the Crystal sword in a speedrun. In a TAS, you can manipulate to get a first strike fairly easily, and then the actual duping would be done frame perfect. And by the time you get Avenger sword, you have no more need for money. And as an aside, to what Tilus was saying about duping swords for money, there really isn't much that you want to buy that you can't already afford. The only place to buy Elixirs and Ether2s are at Hummingway's, and you don't need them by that point. Weapons are mostly useless, because the best weapons are usually found. I thought for a moment about being able to buy Ninja stars maybe, but then I realized you need Excalibur already for Kokkol to start selling them. The only possibility I can think of is duping the Black sword to be able to make the Cure2 item run sooner in the game. However, I think you would be able to do this in a TAS (maybe even a speedrun, I'd have to make sure) anyway by buying minimal items. At any rate, getting a couple chests like the 2000 GP in the weapon/armor shop in Baron would be faster than duping. Actually, in a TAS, I would only recommend going to a store for: Cure2 item run in Mysidia after Paladinhood, Bandannas in Baron, and Blizzard spear in Eblan.

Josh the Funk DOC told me you had replied to this thread. =) Could you elaborate on your improvement ideas? I did all the segments 20-30 times, so the boss fights in the middle are very optimized for a speedrun unless there's some strategies I didn't test. The luck could be better in parts, but that's TAS territory. Did you look at my comments? I list some improvement ideas at the end. Also, as an aside, I think the segment comments are really worth reading for the funny. ;) You could always try setting battle speed lower while fighting some boss and actually test. I still think duping Excalibur should be better because it is way faster. Getting the Tail is not bad. It's the part after that, and then the duping. You'd have to test, but I wouldn't be surprised either way. I would recommend you restart. Mt Ordeal really isn't that far. To be honest, I'm pretty happy that I would only be 1-2 mins behind a TAS WIP with a speedrun. =p Good to see you're working on this again! I wish you luck.

Apparently I missed the boat when everyone switched from FF2 US/FF4 SFC to FF4 GBA. I wanted to say, I might be able to help out a little with advice since I improved Peter's run of FF2 US at SDA by 20 minutes from 4:15 to 3:55. You can get the run here and the comments here for now if anyone's interested. It may not be very useful for a FF4 TAS, but at the very least, it has to be a better reference/source of ideas than Peter's old run. Disclaimer: I have not played FF4 GBA and do not intend on getting it or the ROM. This also means I haven't watched the WIP either. Anyway, I'm a little surprised that the opinions of the remake are so positive here, but at SDA the reaction is mixed, especially on battle speed 1. I'm completely surprised that there are people here who are against powersave abuse, and even sequence breaking and mass leveling. Has this site been invaded by TG? I thought the TAS crowd would be the most liberal on use of glitches, massive luck manipulation, and all that. To me, if you don't use everything you can, that's like those people who complain that the text is advancing too fast and could you please wait more. Now some general points I want to say about this TAS in progress. I hear all this talk about fighting regular enemies in a TAS and it seems really suboptimal to me. I tested multiple times in a real speedrun up to Paladin, and not leveling at all vs getting Rydia Lit1 is definitely faster. In fact, most of the time I save vs Peter is because I only fight 2 regular enemy fights in the entire game, both DMachin's. And in a TAS, not fighting regular fights has to be an even better decision than in a speedrun, because you can just manipulate better, and even better in hardtype because you can do all this stuff like Tellah's random spell. Also, are we completely sure that the Alerter guys in the Giant don't still summon Dragon Mechs, because it wouldn't make sense for them to take that out. Even in FF2 US, some Alerters summon Centaurs and others summon the Dragon Mechs. I needed to reload many times because I got Centaurs and there's no way to tell until they're summoned. It could still be like that in this version and Tilus just didn't test very well. I would have suggested Attacker/Defender because it should be better in a TAS (I used DMachin because it is too difficult to use Attacker/Defender in a speedrun). But if that no longer works, I suggest the same leveling spot as my run, only gaining minimal levels of course. (Rosa is the one who needs to be in highest level if that helps you.) I also thought duping Excalibur would be better in a TAS but apparently the item glitch has been fixed, so I think either Crystal sword or nothing would be the best. I can't give a solid suggestion because I do not remember exactly how much harder hardtype Zeromus is, but I think Crystal sword should be better because Cecil's attack goes way up and it doesn't take long to get. As for items to get, this is what I have settled on for FF2 US speedrun... you need to adapt this to FF4 GBA TAS (I removed some obvious things to remove), but whatever is still valid I believe is correct. At least it's some ideas. - Darkness sword - buy 4 Headbands after you get Yang in Baron - get the Tiara and Change rod from Rydia's house after getting airship (the Tiara goes on Rydia, then can go on Rosa in the end) - Fire sword - Earth hammer - Catclaw, potentially a previous claw if it increases attack multiplier - buy Blizzard spear in Cave Eblan - Dragoon EQ - Protect ring - White robe - Crystal sword Basically, you want something if it drastically increases your attack power, increases your attack or magic multiplier, or helps you need fewer levels to gain vs Zeromus. Except for Zeromus, I don't get a single item for defense in a speedrun, so it ought to be even less necessary in a TAS. Everyone seems to usually want to pick up too many items. It's usually not worth the time. If you think maybe it should be more manipulation and less items, I suggest items and more manipulation would be even better. I wanted to say, it seems very strange that a lot of the romhackers on gamefaqs will discover interesting things and then leave them on the gamefaqs board where nobody will see it and it gets erased, compared to an FAQ where people could see it, or posting here where people could really use the info. I know there was a guy who knew every little thing there is to know about Lufia 2 but went AWOL, and quietkane was busy killing himself trying to experiment everything. That's all I can think of right now.

I haven't been keeping up with this thread or any of this site for that matter, but I do want to say that I improved the FF2 run over at SDA by a little over 20 minutes, from 4:15 to 3:55. It is currently available at Persona's page, and should be on SDA itself once all the administrative stuff is taken care of. Maybe you can find some things to use, but at least it should be a better reference than Peter Tiernan's old run. As an aside, it's a bit amusing now to note that I originally started this thread with getting to Zeromus in 3:58 on ZSNES, and now I get there at 3:40 on a real SNES. I know a lot about this game, Tilus, so I think I could help you. I really think you shouldn't be fighting any regular enemy fights so far. If you remember way back earlier in this thread, I tested and not fighting any non-required fights before Paladin was better, even for a console run, and the difference would be even greater for a TAS. Most of the chests you can pick up are not worth the time either. To reduce random battles, I would try power cycling for a TAS, since it's so quick for FF2. I don't think you need to be getting any overworld battles, for one. Non-obvious key strategies that I would do different in a TAS compared to my console run are: 1) Get Excalibur and dupe it while running with Strike First! 2) Level up using Attacker/Defender (probably using FuSoYa's Quake) instead of D Machin's. Other things like getting critical hits you can figure out by yourself. Kyrsimys, the battle messages only count for fighting messages and not plot messages in battle, like the Mist Dragon and Golbez and Edge's parents and such. It's a little arbitrary, but messages such as "Kain! Jump!" are indeed affected by battle message speed. About FF4 GBA, it would have to be faster based on the battle action bug (it does exist, as discussed on SDA), which is more pronounced with battle speed 1. Your characters move way too fast, which hurts enemies and automated moves like Jump and Berserk. nitsuja, I agree that this is a very real possibility, but it isn't obvious as in FF3, where the battle speed only affects the enemies. Tilus should definitely test this out.

In all seriousness, a lot of people consider this AI exploit a "feature" of the game. It's basically impossible to get all S-ranks in Advance Wars without it anyhow, so at least it was planned for. Not that I support bad AI...

I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss all weapons as unnecessary time-wasting detours. I remember saving over 3 minutes in the Moleville Mines in my 2nd revision (the published one) compared to the first run through because I bought the Work Pants and Weapons before entering the mines, and it shortened the boss fights considerably.
Well definitely if getting certain weapons works better, go for that. I meant skip all the (weapons that you can in the interest of time) rather than (skip all the weapons that you can) in the interest of time. I was referring to people who would rather see an "ultimate weapon" or something "secret" like the Lazy Shell being used, even if it is a bit slower. It's not an issue of entertainment vs speed, it's just that I don't find "ultimate weapons" very entertaining.

The movie is 2:04:06 not 2:05:06 like written there. Guess you just have overlooked that but it doesn't matter that much. Also if you cut this 29 min waiting time before (which is a good thing to save file-size) why you haven't also cut the last 5 min which you have wait only to see the message: "Its Bills fault"? This way the movie has 5 worthless minutes black screen without any music and this is absolutely unnecessary and only makes the AVI File bigger and longer.
Yeah but regarding the file size, you know that part probably compressed like gangbusters. And I think it's great, people could be able to tell you're German by just reading your posts like this one. =p

Does SNEeSe use snesapu? Because I heard that was the most accurate. I use zsnes so I don't really follow snes9x, but I'm surprised it isn't on par with zsnes yet because kode54 wrote the current zsnes sound core, I thought.

It depends on what your goal is. Mine is to get through the game as quickly as possible, which means that, in some levels, I'm having trouble killing the unnecessary lemmings quickly enough.
Yeah, I was talking about normal playing. =p I just wanted to add: is there some sort of an escape button on the NES version? Because on any Lemmings version in which it's possible, I would always hit Escape as soon as I met the minimum percentage.

I'm confused. Do you: 1) Play without using SRAM. 2) Only use one save state. 3) Play on an emulator without rewind. I have no other ideas how you could get completely stuck.

Enhasa: Sorry, but as far as I'm concerned, FF5 was a step backward from 4 in everything except gameplay (I played all the SNES ones at around the same time, so there's no nostalgia coming through here). The graphics were worse as I recall, and the music was nowhere near the level of the others (Gilgamesh's theme and a couple others are all that I find to be memorable). The plot and characters are by far the most bland of any FF since the NES days (and I've played on both the translated ROM and the PSX version). And even the gameplay wasn't all good; every character in FF4 was truly unique, and the job system renders everyone in 5 generic. Plus chemists are far more broken than anyone in 4. Frankly, I still feel that FF6 has possibly the best overall soundtrack of any game, ever. There's a whole bunch of things wrong with it (I feel it could really use a full-blown remake, but that's for another topic), but the music is just awesome. Oh yeah, and I'm with you on the Minibosses/NESkimos. The only "cover band" I recall liking is Game Over. A metal singer who can actually SING...who'da thunk it? =P -Josh
We agree with each other more than you probably think. I was just talking about people who somehow hate it while loving 4 and 6. The plot and characters in 5 were certainly the blandest of the three, although in certain instances (with say Boco and also Ex-death and Mu) the simplicity of the plot allowed it to actually be stronger (think Ico). 5 has the most throwaway tracks I think, but it also has the most beautiful songs in the series (intro, Gilgamesh, the 3 overworlds). About 6, I'm sorry, but I could never really dig Uematsu. I think his games have too much filler and his songs can sound too alike and boring, with the same traditional AABA song structure in every song. (don't get me wrong though, he's still better than over 90% of game music) I am a big gameplay guy, and I actually think 5 is the weakest of the bunch for the reasons you mentioned. That's why I would rank the FF series like 6, 4, 5, big dropoff. They're all really close in my mind; graphics is essentially the tiebreaker for 6 and 4. As long as you don't think 5 is worse than say, 2 or 9 or mystic quest, or think that 6's soundtrack is "the greatest musical accomplishment of the 20th century," you're cool with me. =) Good VGM covers: Group X's Mario (of course) and the Zelda song from SOAD.

I see no "Lemmings 3." I'll assume you mean Lemmings Revolution, but it's confusing anyway. The sequel to Lemmings 1 was Oh No! More Lemmings, so really Lemmings 2 was the third "main" Lemmings... and so on.

Dexterity is useful in a Starcraft micromanagement sort of way. Many a Starcraft player has been ruined not by strategy or tactics, but by lack of dexterity.

I've been working on Lemmings for the NES, and I second that. For me, it's quite logical that if you could save every lemming in every level, they would require you to do so. However, they don't.
Simple, the normal requirements would be for mere mortals, while saving every lemming would be for those seeking more challenge. In fact, I think some of the expansion level packs, such as the Prima pack or the 2 Christmas packs, can be completed losing no lemmings, but I'm not 100% sure of this. For Lemmings 1, the best argument against is they don't require you to save all lemmings, or else the Exploders would be quite useless. In Lemmings 2, Exploders are deemphasized, although you need to use them on that Polar level I was talking about. Even the Classic levels don't require them; your lemmings die due to needing Blockers.

Sorry to repeat myself, but... I'm assuming based on what you wrote above that sound issues in zsnes are causing desync. Or is it just that the recorded sound is garbled? And I'm assuming that snes9x has similar issues or you would have already tried it there. Also, did Nach or anyone else give a timetable to when this might be fixed? If the answer is "indefinitely," I might want to think of taking up another project.

The D&D games, especially Shadow of Mystara, seem like great choices since, as far as I know, they weren't ported to home consoles.

Maybe it's the ugly Sonic redesign sprites, I dunno.
To be honest, I find the GBA definitely the most disappointing console of all time. It should be great on paper, but instead it's where all great series go and mysteriously become terrible. Usually the lost in translation part of the port is concrete, as in lowering the difficulty in uh just about every game, but sometimes it is hard to put a finger on it. The only games I can stand are new games in new series (Golden Sun, MM Zero, MM EXE, Boktai, WarioWare, Advance Wars and FE in the US), I can't think of a single remake that was even on par with the original, and even games that everyone else and their mother thinks are great (Mario and Luigi, FFTA, Sword of Mana, etc) I think are awful. I think that, by choosing to make a portable game, developers are subconsciously choosing to slack off in a way compared to making a console game. It doesn't seem like it should work this way (I'm not one who thinks that graphics and gameplay are opposing ends of an axis for example), but maybe there's a self-fulfilling prophecy deal going on that dooms most should-be-winners on the GBA to failure.
