So I've finished a test version of stage 5, and some interesting things happened. First of all I got up the wall with the rocks, which saves a bunch of time. It can probably be done a little bit faster though. Secondly I kept one of the worm creatures from spawning by scrolling the camera down a little bit before reaching him. I'm not sure why that causes him to not spawn but I'm glad cause they cause a lot of lag. On the autoscrollers I kept the flying enemies from spawning by changing certain inputs. They generate lag when they spawn so that's necessary. Finally though, I found that if you time your shots/slides a certain way, you can get the Banthas to not spawn their body. I didn't test whether this was actually faster or not, but I thought it was funny so I left it in. http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/18599661517161540

You know you could make a topic for the game and post a WIP there instead of here. Anyway, I'll add to the list (not sure what's been mentioned already). The Invincible Iron Man Has a couple dash abilities, and interesting gameplay I think. Pinky and the Brain - The Master Plan Has abilities and you control 2 characters, though not simultaneously. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 - Battle Nexus Has cool sliding mechanics, and plus it's the ninja turtles. How could you not like it. Any of the Tak Games, though I think Tak 2 would be the most interesting. People have said they would suck but I disagree. Edit: Adding to the list a bit: Ghost Rider Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (was a choice for DTC4 I think) Fantastic 4 - Flame On Metalgun slinger and then these games which aren't the best choices but I'd still watch: Nightmare Before Christmas Curious George W.I.T.C.H. The Scorpion King Spirits and Spells Daredevil (maybe decent actually)

"Okay, finally done with level 4 (I think, never know). Saved an additional 253 frames over the last version I posted. Thanks to Tompa for making me aware of spike slide boosting!" http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/18507128064956571 Edit: Found an interesting boost in level 5, but I doubt it's usefulness in the TAS. Jumping near a boulder sometimes allows you to get a double jump in midair. I was hoping to catch another rock here and do it again trying to get over the top of the level (if that's even possible). However the other rock doesnt spawn until you despawn the first one (off screen). Here's a gif anyway: Edit2: So I successfully found a way to double boost using the falling rocks. Doing it again might be tough or impossible but we'll see.

Finished level 4 after going through it a second time. Managed to reduce a lot of lag frames this time around. The one thing that did happen this time though, was that one of the big turrets was there, when on the first playthrough it wasn't. This time there were a couple of those laser forcefields missing, which helped a little. Anyway, here it is! http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/18462641476418640 Edit: Tompa found some improvements, so I'm currently redoing stage 4.

Improved level 2 slightly, and finished level 3. Using L and R to scroll things off screen, such as turrets, and explosions when you blow something up. That lessens the lag a little bit, but it's still very laggy. Didn't use the shooting/slide cancel at the top, because it's a homing powerup and it will generate a lot of lag homing into those turrets. A superjump glitch of some sort would sure help in this level... http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/18421065572467152

It's been a while, and I've been jumping between games to try and stay interested in doing anything. Working so long on one game is frying my brain, but don't worry I'll have this game done before Christmas. I've redone up through level 7 again and so far saved 370 frames over my last WIP. Weird little tricks save frames in unexpected places, so it's more than I though I'd save. Used the boomerang/damage glitch in level 7 for a funny effect, and a time-saving one too. http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/18323865882562139

So, anyone want to help on the second level? This is giving me nightmares with randomness, and how laggy it is. Since I don't know anything about the rng, I have no idea just how much these things can be manipulated to appear. I know you can reduce lag by manipulating there to be no enemies on the way to sandcrawler. Anyway here's a small test I did... I'm 99% positive you can manipulate them faster, but I hate this level so much. http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/18323102971852052

I would love to see the game optimized don't get me wrong. What killed it for me though was the long dancing section, and the incredibly long (~9000 frame) final boat sequence. Maybe the rest of the run could be entertaining enough despite this, but you would probably need to find some sort of glitch for it to be very entertaining. That being said, I still look forward to what can be done with the game.

Figured this warrants a new post. Found a faster way to shoot using the slide for 1 frame to reset your ability to shoot. This means I can rapidfire the boss, between all the lag frames of course.. I haven't checked if it's possible to save time elsewhere in the level, specifically the first scorpion that I jump over. http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/18259452378171462 Edit: Saved 24 more frames on the boss fight, from watching his HP and better placement. http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/18276025283337118 Edit2: Finally got the boss to appear when I previously said I did. He appears when the boss meter is just at the S. I believe this is the fastest possible, but I can't be entirely sure. This saves another 10 frames overall, maybe more if I try to prevent more lag.

So this is interesting. I used boosting in more places, and for that reason I got across the level quicker. I was ahead by about 20 frames of my other attempt when approaching the boss. However, I'm at the right side of the screen and the screen takes a while to catch back up and it ends up being about 15 frames slower in the end.. Frame 4245 on the revised version, when the boss text appears. And frame 4230 on the old version, when the boss text appears also. So that's something to consider as well, and makes things more annoying. Unless you can find a way to make the screen catch up quicker. Edit Okay, so far I found that sliding backwards for about 2 or so frames and then resuming will put the camera back close to where it should be. I was able to get the boss text at 4218 now, not quite the 20 frames I was ahead by, but still 12. frame 4218 Added the finished file, Now using the 1.0 version of the Rom. I think it should be correct. http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/18235736872675195 Edit2: So you can apparently manipulate when the boss first appears. I managed to get him to appear quicker. However I messed around on the old test I did, and for some reason he appeared a couple of frames after the boss text appeared. I couldn't get it that fast this time around, but I think with some good RAM watches and rng breakdown, it should be possible. That being said I'm not very good at that. Here's a comparison (older version first, new version second) of when his tentacle first appears: Frame 4266.......................................................Frame 4245 Unfortunately I wasn't able to scroll the screen to the right as much as last time, which I believe cuts down on a few lag frames during the fight. Also, that version I got before on a random file, he appeared when the boss meter was around the end of the S in his name. I wanna say that's about ... 10 frames faster, but I'm not sure, I saved over that file since then.

Got tired of Hachiemon so decided to do something else for a bit. Don't worry I'll get back to it soon. For now I just want to post this little test I did and what things I've noticed about the game. Some enemies are random. Sometimes they spawn, sometimes they don't. I found that if you cancel your slide by shooting it cuts down on the transition frames by a few (at least I think..). Doing this also cuts down on lag frames considerably for whatever reason. Also making enemies not spawn cuts down on lag frames as well. Another thing I noticed is that when you do a high jump and shoot, sometimes you teleport upwards slightly? I'm not sure but it seems like it could be used to gain height. Anyways, here's the test (bizhawk 1.8.1): http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/18216882984672579

I don't see why all the runs can't be merged and published in the same list, for ease of access if nothing else. You could simply add the vault icon, similar to moons or stars and state what it means on the top of the page. That way people know it wasn't as "entertaining" as other movies, but they can still find the games they want relatively easy.

Why do you miss so many hits on the butterflies? Even if it's not possible to hit them at that time, it makes it look sloppy. Even so, I'm sure that it's improvable. And like others have said, you seem to take damage for no real reason. Even so, improving this game to a perfect state I don't think it would be very entertaining. Sure the graphics, animation and sound are good, it's just that the gameplay makes it very lackluster.

I said I wouldn't post, but I decided to since I'm being lazy with the game this week. I promise I won't post any more improvements to keep it secretz! Level 3 complete, 186 frames ahead of the old WIP: http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/18005306620083313 edit(10/12/2014): Finished level 5, now 284 frames ahead of the old WIP.

Okay so it appears as though I need to start the entire run over. This bug I found that deals with boomerangs and being damaged is useful in the very first level. Since the damage animation takes quite a while, there's not an incredible amount of time saved, but 24 frames saved nonetheless. The boomerang actually catches up to me faster than I expected. http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/17839791472800801 Edit: I'm not going to post anymore WIP's, but I will post progress here in edits for anyone curious. So far I'm starting level 3 127 frames ahead of the old WIP. About half of that is from a better boss fight. Edit2: Finished stage 3, 186 frames ahead. I'm actually surprised I was able to save about 60 frames on this stage. I'm glad I started over.

The mole levels in particular are hard to optimize. The fact that I take 2 hits to save time, means I can't get hit again, so I have to beat the spiked guy back up the cave. I found out it's actually faster to do it that way anyway, instead of using the boomerang to grab all the pieces at the bottom. Feel free to suggest an improvement if you think it will save time. Edit: Of course as soon as I post this, I find an improvement. Improved 58 frames by using a boomerang to quick grab the next to last lip. http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/17816485675260447 Edit 2: So I've found an interesting little bug that is actually useful. If you have the damage animation, and use a boomerang you can still use your beak. It only works when you take damage though, but it opens up some shortcuts, because even though it makes the boomerang invisible, it is still going through it's normal trajectory. Now I'm considering potential areas where I could possibly take damage on purpose, when it involves boomerangs. This could also be useful in other levels. An interesting idea I have is since the lip can make you move around very fast, the boomerang might have trouble catching up to you, and could potentially be manipulated through the course to pick up lips. It's tough because the lip is invisible so I'm never quite sure where it is.

So it's been a while since I've posted an update. Finished up through level 9 for now. I might revisit level 9 before moving on, as there are a few things I want to try. I've been kinda lazy with the game lately, but I've put too much time into it now to give up! Anyway, here's the progress for the curious: http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/17718890820951695

Here's a GB game I found, it is essentially Radical Rex with a few differences. Instead of breathing fire, you shoot projectiles (rather slowly I might add). I haven't spent much time and already found a few interesting things. At least I think so. When moving to the right, your x speed is normally 2 and it drops to 1 every few frames. However if you press right and then the next frame hold L+R, you'll move at 2 constantly without dropping to 1, and you slide along the floor. I haven't found a way to get it to work moving to the left yet. When moving down slopes, jumping at the right time can prolong your speed a little bit. In 1-2 if you jump on the nest the very first frame possible, t-rex falls to the floor and when the bird picks you up, he's confused for some reason and takes you into the wall. There's no way to zip or anything that I've found, so instead you just need to jump up out of the wall. There's also a graphical glitch I found that's very easy to perform. If you press Fire for one frame and then Down for 1 frame after that and let go of down the next frame, the graphics become screwed, giving t-rex the wrong sprites and making other sprites scrambled as well. I don't see any particular use for it, but I used it on the first boss just to show it off. It probably cost a few frames to do so, I haven't really checked. On world 2 the skateboards can be sped up by minimum jumping as soon as you land on them. You jump off faster than you normally ride the skateboard and when you land, if you're close enough, you pull the skateboard to you. You can repeat that until you have to ditch the skate board. Also when jumping off a skateboard, if you press left for one frame and then resume pressing right, your speed will increase to 5 for a few frames, when normally 4 is the max you'd get. Anyway, I still dunno if this is a good game choice or not, there's a lot of slow movements even though the downhill parts are somewhat fast. I think the later levels would be more interesting, difficulty wise and it wouldn't be too hard to TAS up to. The game is fairly simple. Anyway, I'll let you judge: http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/17708247229236344

Up to level 7, but I can't figure this level out. Real life events have reduced my free time drastically, so I haven't spent much time on it. If someone could translate the Japanese signs in this level, it might give me a hint. http://www.mediafire.com/download/a5nq2vf1dd636my/Exxonym_Hachiemon_hard701.bk2 Edit: Nevermind, found the object that makes you small at the very top of the screen almost near the level's exit.

Alright, this one took a bit longer than I thought. The dreaded water stage. Fortunately it turned out a lot faster than I thought, because you can still use all your abilities. Found a few good tricks for saving a little bit of time. http://www.mediafire.com/download/q91j3086p7mk74f/Exxonym_Hachiemon_hard305.bk2 Saved 7 more frames by messing around with the end section. http://www.mediafire.com/download/r8ma1w3d6a1eyda/Exxonym_Hachiemon_hard306.bk2 Okay that fix was sloppy, now 4 frames faster and should be closer to optimal. http://www.mediafire.com/download/16d33ep9w07pz08/Exxonym_Hachiemon_hard307.bk2
