Incoming unpopular opinion! I will grant that destroying everything in sight was fun, but this run took about 30 minutes and a jetpack to really kick into gear. Everything from there on was really nice. I approve, though not as strongly as others would, who I suspect do so mainly because it Cave Story, consarnit!

Because we are men, and we ought not be wasting our time discussing such silly things as a girl's cartoon!

Have a fairly civil discussion about this guy and how he may or may not be a threat to positive portrayals of males in girl's entertainment. Time to lock the thread.

I don't see Big Mac as being "dumb" and "slow". Rather I see him as being easy going and full of simple wisdom. "Inconsiderate"? Just because he rightfully tells his sister she's being foolish and later reinforces the point? Big Mac is one of my favorites for just how chill and relaxed he is. Everyone could stand to learn from him, even myself if this post is any indication!

Wow, that's pretty tragic. Why didn't the media cover this?
Because it's easier to hold massive press releases with front page newspaper coverage for fancy-pants touchscreen consumer electronics than it is to do so for dowhile loops and class types used by engineers. Steve Jobs had a public face; Dennis Ritchie was behind the scenes. Truth be told, I didn't even know the dude's name until this topic.

I tried Castle of the Winds on hourglass. I had to CAD hourglass to close it down.

Cheezwizz: From poking around the game' settings myself, I think there may not be a "default speed" for this game. The way it strikes me is that the guy making this just got the game to run at all, had the speed be CPU based, and handed some speed controls to the player for them to decide what speed they were comfortable playing at. Very bad design, and it makes deciding what to do here tricky. Put differently, I'm not so sure the guy intended any particular PC setup for this to run. (I kinda love submissions like this for forcing issues and sparking debates on what needs to be done)

Thing is it is emulated well. It's just emulating hardware it wasn't designed for.

Okay, finally got to watch this... Am I the only one who feel pangs of nostalgia watching this? I never played this as a kid, but hearing the noises and seeing graphics like this make me wanna be a kid again. However, I'll hold out for a version that's speed throttled. This was no fun to watch.

I repeat something I said earlier: You dropped this topic in the middle of a community that isn't about ponies. Surely you understood the social stigma the show carries, so if you were expecting everyone here to share the love you have with the show, you deserve to be disappointed. Also, to clarify something I said on page 2: The moment in episode 2 I was talking about was Twilight's confrontation with Nightmare. Especially bad was when everyone else wandered in on the fight. "And So-and-So, by, blah-blah-blah, represents the spirit of Such-and-Such!" I am truthfully baffled by how adults genuinely enjoy such an over-the-top display. I blame Japan. :P

I challenge you to link me to a single episode which features a genuinely funny joke.
Fluttershy gives you two examples; just ignore Rainbow's unnatural voice acting in the first, though. I've been doing a little more thinking about how the show managed to explode in popularity. I've narrowed it down to three factors combining: 1) The show is based on an old franchise known for being aimed at girls. 2) The show is passable enough in its quality, having some strong moments on occasion. 3) The meme-friendly nature of the internet acts as a sort of self-reinforcing sounding board. All three of these things had to be present. If the internet were not around when the show started, it may have earned a level of popularity, but nothing big. It probably would just be referred to as "Perhaps the best My Little Pony cartoon made" years down the road. If it weren't very good, it probably would have gotten passed over the way the G3 cartoons did. If the cartoon were the same, but the characters were replaced with things that weren't related to ponies, it would likely be regarded as Faust's attempt at providing entertainment for little kids. But it's a show of questionable heritage, managing to rise above its shameful past to put something good on? Throw 4chan into that mix and BAM! A character that appears for two seconds in the background has a name, a job as a mail carrier, and a daughter, getting that attention merely because her eyes weren't looking the same direction. And that's about the gist of it: the meme-tastic nature of the internet has managed to take the show and turn it into a completely different beast. At this point I'm convinced most fans have more fun being fans than they do actually watching the show. Talking about the show, assigning certain characteristics to characters, writing fanfiction and whatnot Are the major things you find in other communities. Rarely can you hold a conversation about the actual merits of the show without someone talking about the totalitarian nature of Celestia. Or Rainbow being a lesbian. And since it takes place on the internet, it all reinforces itself, spiraling out of control. It's amazing furries have managed to survive before the days of the World Wide Web! And it's all possible because it's a My Little Pony cartoon that is passable in quality. Because, you see, it's funny that I enjoy a show made for girls, but it's actually good so I can justify myself, see, all my internet buddies can back me up! And yes, I too have fallen for that trap. Why do you think I submitted that Runaway Rainbow run?

Dang kids these days. The current ready availability of encodes is fantastic. It wasn't that long ago that encodes weren't available at all until the movie was published. Sure, it's always nice when the encodes show up sooner rather than later, but look at your possible sources for encodes: 1) The encoders for this site, who are all donating their time and computers. You really want to "force" them to provide encodes? 2) The creator of the TAS. Leaving aside the fact that just making the TAS is typically a monumental effort, many don't even speak English. How are you going to communicate the requirement and procedure for making an encode to them? This is one situation in which I can safely say you should be grateful for what you already have. That applies to everyone whining about encodes in the submission threads too. tl;dr encodes are a privilege, not a right

The site uses 60.0 fps for gameboy. The policy of the site has traditionally been to use whatever the emulator emulates at. Does VBA not emulate at 60fps?
I have no idea what the newer ones are like, but I know the older ones had some issues. Yes, VBA uses 60 FPS, except some frames last longer than others. For instance, load up my Daikatana run in the VBA it was recorded in and watch the frame counter. Right before the title screen, you'll see the frame counter pause for nearly a second before continuing on, but the music is still playing. In other words, that "frame" was one second long, while others were 1/60th of a second long.

Did they take into account that the earth is spinning in their calibrations? Is that something that would need to be taken into account? Like, the earth is spinning in the opposite direction of neutrino travel so you get speed of light in direction of neutrino movement + whatever speed the earth is spinning at that radius in some other direction.
From what I gather, some of the earliest experiments in determining the speed of light showed that things don't work like that. Time and space dilate in such a way that the speed of light is constant no matter the setup.

Well, that certainly felt a lot faster than your test run. What all did you do differently? And what do the different attacks do/mean?

The previous MLP TAS wasn't really a joke, but it was indeed a horrible game, so it looked like a joke.
Ferret Warlord said he had no intention of getting it published, and he submitted it solely for our reactions. So yes, it was a joke.
I said I wasn't surprised that it got rejected. I never said I had no intention to get it published. I was only half joking when I submitted it.
