"It's a part of history where I wasn't following the site culture so I do apologize in advance for getting anything wrong here." For further context, I made a submission in 2011, which played through all the completable minigames, that was initially rejected for game choice and later re-rejected for being slightly suboptimal.

To give viewers a little more context, Jinsei Owata no Daibouken is the game that inspired the creation of I Wanna Be the Guy. When it first came out, it was in an incomplete state. Kaiyin played this demo, thought to himself, "I can do better than this," and went on to make IWBtG. King, the creator of Owata, then played IWBtG, loved it, and decided to include a final area in Owata as a big shoutout to it.

You might want to double check your URL there, RT. Oh hey, 15 years later, and someone decides to follow up on my efforts! I am genuinely happy to see this. It's exciting to see that you found a use for the missile reload quirk. Unfortunately - and I will be the first to admit that this is probably raging, out of control ego speaking here - I find that killing the same group of 8 metroids, with not-insignificant downtime between each go-around, is kind of dull. But this really isn't my community anymore. The future is now, and y'all can decide what to do with this movie. And yes, since some of my input is copied, I'd like to request coauthorship. Thank you.

I speak very much as a non-expert on this, and may even be wrong on all counts, but I have a few nits I wish to pick. First, I want to say that it is nice - and quite impressive! - that several levels have been improved. However, given what has already been said, that just means this should have been a standard any%. As mentioned by others, frontloading the bonus levels into the first two levels is just boring. If the goal is to 100% the game as quickly as possible, they should have been spread out across the game more evenly, unless this method truly is the fastest way of getting all the emeralds. And then the bonus levels themselves: I will be the first to admit that I am terrible at making entertaining lulls in the action, but I have to say that everything here felt very lethargic. There is very little movement or dancing around, very few close calls when dodging things, and often movement appears imprecise. Things seem to improve a bit in later rounds when it became clearer that Tails was being controlled independently, but then the goal choice within the bonus rounds and the execution of those goals seemed unclear. Sometimes you barely clear the quota; other times you vastly overshoot it. I can understand either goal, but in this case I think you should pick one and stick with it. Here's my breakdown: 1) Fewer rings means less time on the bonus countdown - that is, if that matters. 2) More rings can be seen as more impressive. In some cases where you seem to go for 1, you end up going over the quota by a few rings; for example, the very first emerald you collect 143 out of 140 needed. I would think it would be more impressive to just get exactly what you need. When it seems you go for 2 , there are plenty of rings going uncollected; the very last emerald, you collect 300, when you only need 210, and leave plenty of other rings behind. If you're going for a high ring count, go all in! If the goal is 1 in order to keep the bonus countdown to a minimum, would it help to keep the rings spread out between Sonic and Tails? Since it looks like the game deducts both ring counters at the same time, divying them up would result in the absolute lowest countdown. I guess what I'm trying to say is, great job on improving the main game, but everything else leaves me bored and confused. I hope things can be cleared up a bit.

Thank you, I'll take the compliment. One other remark about the difficulty: It also affects some boss AI patterns. The clearest example I can think of is phase 2 of the final boss has twice as many spikes on the hard difficulty compared to "normal".

Freakin' finally! I'll give it a watch later. ***some times passes*** So, first thing's first, I want to mention that I actually made this run in 2005, not 2006 (publication was a slow process if your name wasn't Phil). Seventeen years ago! Back then we didn't even have memory watching, much less all the crazy things you youngins are using these days. It was just frame advance, save states, and input watching. And the first few runs I made didn't even have that last one. As such it's kind of crazy for me to see many of my runs go uncontested for so long. Maybe it speaks to my natural talent for the art form. Or maybe it's my habit for picking obscure games no one cares about. It's probably that. I don't really care for the change in difficulty, but eh, it's not my site, not my community. I have better things to worry about. Also it's a shame to see the OoB bug in level 1 go. Didn't even think that I could go full speed through the normal route. Dying so you can use more dashes against the Principal! Oh, that's clever! Silly me for not thinking to do that. Thank you, Sammy, for picking this up. It was fun to watch. ThunderAxe Basically what Samsara said. In fact, you can watch the pallette correct itself once Dr. Whoo is defeated in level 5.

I feel that a question like this is important to understand when you have to know how to enter information into a calculator. I work as an HVAC tech, and bless their hearts, for most of my coworkers, the ability to subtract x from both sides is considered god tier mathematics*. One calculation that we routinely do involves entering the information into a calculator as a/b/c. The problem is, in more formal settings, like in a textbook, it's presented as a b*c And I've known some to get confused about why the multiplication symbol disappears. I think at least one of them asked, shouldn't that mean you type it in as a/b*c? And as much as I would love to sit down with some of them to explain where the discrepency is, I usually just resort to, "I watch math videos for fun, trust me on this one." *not saying they are dumb, but they are certainly the kind people that only paid enough attention in high school algebra in order to get a C- before forgetting about the subject entirely

I've only bounced around the video, but I can tell. For example, at 37:15 of the youtube encode, you get caught on a corner, and a short while later press up against a laser turret for a second when it appears you could've been moving forward, and turn around to block for just a few frames. I'm not qualified to solve this problem, but I think you might be overthinking it. It may have more to do with the ratio between volume and surface area: by slicing off a chunk from a cube (supposing our ice block is a cube), you'll remove some ice, but you'll also remove some surface area, making it more difficult for heat to get in. You'd need to calculate a slice that would maximize both volume and surface area. I'll grant the puzzle as stated is a bit understated, failing to describe what the conditions are. Vague language like this leaves a lot open to interperetation.

I watched a bit of this run. Watching it made me realize that this song is based on something public domain. So I did a little digging, and came across this video explaining it. TLDR "Mayim Mayim" is a Jewish folksong that became a cultural touchstone in Japan. Link to video

I think the relevant rule here is "Prototype game versions are only accepted if there is no stable release version available." Which it is pretty clearly the case here. The Playstation version has similarities, but is not the same game as this one. I figure the hack rule should have some leniency because, at this time, there is no other way to play the full game without a hack.
