Not bad, not bad. It's clear this is the sort of thing with an absolutely gigantic world, but about 95% of the stuff to do is optional. I'm pretty sure people who have played this title can best appreciate it.

Chaos in a half shell! Is the volume difference between the music and the voices supposed to be so great? The music was incredibly muted.

And kind of in honor of the run, I went back and beat the recently released Rocket Knight for the first time. Sheesh, the final boss was a pest...

Although my run proved to be at least 20 seconds sub-optimal, I'm still proud of it. And I'm happy for Sonikk for being able to outdo by a fairly good margin; he's come a long way when he first started. It'll be sad to see my run off the main pages, but I should always make room for newer generations. Very nice! Overall much cleaner and much more entertaining than what I had. Next time I'm running a game with autoscrolling sections, I'm giving you a call.

Good run, but it oddly feels really, really long for being only three minutes long. Regardless, I approve. Also, I recognize the cave song as being a remix of the cave song found in the NES Addams Family; is there some other Addams leitmotif I am unfamiliar with?

Yeah, this is much more fun to watch than any of the runs for the sequel. There's much more variety, it's much more colorful, much more interesting. I heartily approve. And to cheer on the publication of this run, I present this sprite edit I made to look like BYU's Cosmo the Cougar.

Let's see here... From what I remember, the amount of time between mechs depends on how quickly you destroy them; they can be dealt with by knocking them off screen. The time between the last mech and the next section I recall operated on a rather large frame rule. I used that to spend a little time messing around with the last one. Not sure if you have different observations, though.

Actually, time doesn't just freeze in Narnia. Earth time and Narnian time proceed at different rates. Earth time is slower in all of the stories except The Last Battle, in which it is faster. [/off topic]

A couple of days ago, my brother bought that Indie pack. Last night, he played Penumbra, and I watched. Not the creepiest game, but it does have some really good atmosphere. Last night, I had a dream that seemed to draw on that spooky, something's-not-right feeling. So, a man had to go on a trip of some kind. I'm assuming personal reasons, possibly to answer some pressing questions about his life. He's on a trail in the middle of a field, with a blizzard blowing around him. He's not quite sure where he's headed, but he knows it's where he's supposed to be. While walking, he comes across what appears to be a small suburban neighborhood. He needs shelter, so he picks a friendly looking house to seek refuge... And finds that it's inhabited by people who look *exactly* like the family he had lost in a tragedy. The wife, his kids, they all looked the same! Obviously spooked, but not willing to turn down hospitality, he stays for a few hours. Over the course of these hours, things somehow go from friendly to hostile, with continued screaming and threats. Eventually he throws the cat into the walk-in refrigerator that they had (where it started licking off some leftover strawberry smoothie on a dish) and threw a birthday at the four-month-old baby, who was in a baby walker. Except instead of splattering all over the baby's face, it simply bounced off of her, and landed on the ground, still on the platter, no worse for wear. Okay, something is *clearly* not right here, this man thinks. Scared out of his wits, he darts out of the house, leaving the cake on the ground, that cat in the fridge, and the wife in the kitchen washing dishes. Some months later, he finds he has some reason to return. Go goes to the house and decides to enter... And finds everything *exactly* as he left it. The baby playing in the walker, the cake on the same spot on the ground, the wife doing the same dishes, the cat licking the same smoothie. And what added to the spookiness of this? It wasn't some sort of Narnian thing where time held still inside when he left, but that it had been like this the entire time he was gone. I never got to finish the dream. I'm kinda glad, I found it spooky enough, even though (or perhaps because?) this was the cake that was thrown.

I don't think it's very open source, but Ikachan is a short, simple game done by the Cave Story guy. Maybe that could help?

Personally, I think the best (or maybe easiest) solution would be to use a mercator projection, tile it like such, and give the player the ability to rotate the map to orient themselves as needed.

This is especially obvious in Terranigma, where the overworld is based on our own globe. Travel north of Russia, you end up in Antarctica.

I'll file this under "Neat idea, flawed execution." Jump physics are crucial to a character's "personality" and are nearly impossible to reverse engineer. Although how anyone could screw up Megaman's so badly I don't know. And I'm with CAD: Why Zelda 1 Link? Zelda 2 Link would have melded much better with what's here.
